Introducing my new little fishing buddy...

Recommended Posts

I'd like to take this time to announce to this community the birth of my son! "Baby Charlie" as my daughter has so dubbed him came last night at 10:22 pm. He was 19 inches long and 6 lbs 11 oz. Charlie is five weeks early and is spending a day or two in the NICU with other premies. Yet, he is keeping his temperature up, breathing like a trooper, and breast feeding like an old pro. I'm so proud of him...he should be coming home on monday or tuesday this week. Wow, what a wild up and down ride this week has been!

So, if you don't see me much out on the ice this year, you'll know where I am.

Thanks for listening...

scifisher

PS - looking for fishing rod for the little guy...yeah, I know, Olivia (my three year old daughter) didn't use hers until this year, but I know that he has it...

Congratulations to the Sci family! I agree that you should think about getting a REAL nice rod for the little nipper, and get it broken in for him while he's growing into it.

Congrats Scifisher!!! He's about the size of a nice steelhead. Excellent!!! We had a little trouble with ours at delivery too and isn't it a relief to be home safely? My little dude turned two in September and it has been a great ride so far. Don't let folks convince you that your are out time on the water. My boy rides in my backpack carrier while I fish steelhead and loopers on the streams of the NS and even on the Brule (watch out for low hanging branches). We've also found that there is no naptime inducing activity like a good boat ride with trolling speed thrown in here and there!!! Regarding his first rod, mine got a Sage flyrod...much to his mother's consternation. Whadya do though? Why "waste" $15 on a rod he'll only use until he's 4? Do it right the first time!!!

As the kid says at hookup, "Feeesh On Papa!"...

Lota Lota...

Congrats Sci on the new addititon to your household. Any rod will do just as long as you get him one. I myself and my 2 year old daughter were cruising through Gander today when low and behold she comes cruising up behind me saying "diddy, loook, Shoopy!" So for another $10.00 I added to her christmas presents. Ohh can't wait.

Scifisher,

Wanted to also include my congrats to you on the birth of your son smile.gif Glad to hear that both he and mom are home and recovering.

Sounds like quite a few of us have youngsters, looks like we may have to try and have a father/mother/son/daughter get together next year sometime. My little guy turned 2 in June and caught his first fish last summer (LM Bass on a bobber/minnow at grandpa's cabin) and if all goes as planned he will be on the river next summer with me to reel in his first walleye, on chub lake for his first bluegill and crappie, and on a little stocked rainbow lake near home for his first trout. He's got a pretty pretty full schedule next summer and he doesnt even know it yet grin.gif

This is a great idea! It would be really fun to have a FishingMN Family Barbecue at a local lake known for its proliferation of panfish. We could eat some hotdogs, drink some soda or milk, and dunk some worms...and when the kids get tired out comes the swimsuits!

I am right with you on the tight schedule next summer. I'll be done with grad school and my older child will be a ripe 3.5 years, a perfect time to get on the water.

Congrats to you Scifisher!

Kids are a blast, aren't they?

On November 19, my wife delivered to me my son, Lukas, at 8.5 pounds. The doctor said that he was "solid" as soon as he came out. The way he grips my finger makes me think that he can hold a rod right now....

That makes four kids for me, ages 3 weeks, 2 (as of today), 4, and 5.5. That's why you don't see me on this report often, or making it to a lot of the events - although the spirit is willing. I went smelting with some of the guys from the FM world, but obviously, it was after the bedtime of the rest of my household.

However, my wife and I soundly agree that we are done having kids and will take sound intervention to prevent, well, you know.

So it will be soon that I will be out there making three boys and one girl casting, trolling, and jigging maniacs.

Ev

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

saweet to hear........and an extra week sure isnt gonna hurt.

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
