Fisherman-

Don't won't to get anybody in trouble or overly exicted, but being a weather geek, Mile Lacs should have no trouble being locked in 10 days or so. Major shift in the weather pattern (to the cold side) should have the resorts pulling sleepers past the bays come the week of Christmas. Outside of a complete bust (too much wind or snow) - you can be sitting on 9 mile staring down a 8-12" ice hole starting the week of the 19th.

Here comes the cold weather.... cool.gif

Will Fish,

I wouldn't get too excited about fishing the big pond quite yet, I was up there yesterday working on the fish house and there were several boats out fishing. Some of the smaller bays have ice in them but until we get a pretty good cold snap, there's not going to be much ice.

YES,

plan to go out ice fishing on the pond either mon or tue after school. went to check the ice off the dock today and found 4-6" of it. didnt go around the corner but i know it is safe because i saw a guy checking it 3 days ago. found some 5.5 foot of water to try the northern. What did Spongbob Squarepants say?

Will Fish,

That's where my house is, we'll have to keep in touch and get together when the houses are out.

Well, it sounds like there are several FMer's at Mac's, once we get enough ice to get the houses out there, we'll have to all get together for a cold one!! Maybe we could even get a grill going and burn a few hotdog's.

Does Mac's Twin Bay have any good Ice? Is anyone walking out on there? I too am out of Mac's and have my place in a summer spot so I could hit some of this early Ice. grin.gif But I tell you that I will not be the first one out there! In this type of situation I am a follower rather then a leader crazy.gif. But I am starting get the itch

Count me in too! I'm on the all-Venison diet right now, so I'll have to bring some Venison wieners.

I usually go out right away, and have a traditional spot not far from shore. We should all get together and share tips and experience. Maybe we can look out for one another, as well, to help keep the criminals away.

To all the FMer's that have their houses at Mac's, this is my first year there, I'm not sure where Kevin puts the houses but he did mention that if we had any friends that we wanted to be near to let him know. I was wondering if any of you out there would want to get our houses put together for a couple of reasons. 1) We can make new friends, 2) As someone previously mentioned we could be available to help each other out and maybe form a little "neighborhood" watch group to keep an eye on each others houses if we're not there. Anyone interested?

Let me know.

Ole,

I might be interested in that. I do, however, like to move frequently during the winter (usually 4-5 times) and I try to stay away from the crowds (especially the generators!). I feel that the more you bunch people up together, the worse the fishing becomes due to noise (generators, vehicles, people). But we could be a half-mile apart and still be in radio contact and at walkable distance. I'm generally in favor of us networking out on the ice and sharing help and information.

From my experience, Kevin usually puts houses in the bay or near it at first, and then starts moving them out. He keeps a good number inside of Hennepin Island, and then around it. His road turns goes North at Hennepin Island and then out to the gravel and west.

Sounds good, I'd like to stay a ways away from the big pack too although I wouldn't mind having 4-5 houses together for a little socialization. I have an 8'x16', Kevin said it's one of the smaller houses there so when we get ice, I'd be one of the first ones out.

Anyone else interested in getting together?

Ole 1855, BradB, invadersmn, and will_fish_4_food. I have my house at Mac's also. We'll have to get together somehow. BradB I think we met last winter at the end of the season out on the gravel. I had the brown 2-story house with red trim. I think you would remember my 2 kids that came to visit ya several times. I have a vhf radio in my house. And a 104c with the Navionics map in the truck. I try to find spots away from the masses. But I wouldn't mind having some neighbors too.

gizmoguy,

I remember you and your kids! We were way out on the end when the walleye season ended. That was you, correct? I think I gave you a lure, if I remember correctly. Did you catch anything on it?

Have any of you been up to MTB lately, or been in contact with Kevin and/or Karen? I was thinking of going up and making sure everything on my house is in good condition this week. I'm going out as soon as Kevin says it safe to my early ice spot. It's not far away, but I've always done well there.

BradB,

I was there last Sat., putting a new door in the house. I was also going to do some work on the furnace, since the guy we bought it from said it needed the 4" vent pipe replaced because it was rusted. RIGHT!!! When I took the vent cover off the outside wall so I could pull the 4" pipe out, the whole flange that's part of the heat chamber came with it!!! I'm not too happy about that. Anyway, we ended up buying a new Empire and installing it on Sat. as well. I plan on going up again this Fri. 10th, to finish hooking up the furnace, gas lights and the electric lights.

Mudcutter,

Not being as in-the-know about weather as you are, I'm curious to know what indicates we will be having a cold snap. I'm not seeing anything like that suggested on forecasts. I'd sure be relieved if I knew a cold snap was on the way.

Unfortunately, I think the pattern of many recent winters is being repeated. Several of the past few years there has indeed been a sudden cold spell just before Christmas that allowed some fishing over the holidays. I don't think we will even get that this year (as much as I wish we would). Based on the current weather pattern, I'm predicting main part of the lake will still be open water on Christmas day.

I sure hope I'm wrong, because late ice (again) is yet another kick in the crotch for the struggling resort owners on this lake!

Kettle,  just how much snow is on the ground up there??   Looking like some good ice making temps up there the next 3 nights . 3 consecutive nights  below 0. 2 double digits below

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.

I must be the only one hunting pheasants.   Went on Saturday for about 2 hours.  Stunning afternoon.  I got a double at the second spot.
