The smallies are still hammering everything in mont!!!! went out today and caught a bunch with 5 over 16" seemed like they were moving around in schools feeding like crazy, I would catch a bunch faster than I could get my bait back in the water then you'd get nothing for 30 minutes then you'd get hammered again. with that being said the slowest presentation you can stand is your best bet had a lot on tubes today and a grubtail also couldnt buy a bite on minnows unless you let it sit, best presentation was definetely tubes, fished as slow as you possibly can stand just throw em out let em sit then jiggle let em sit longer...... well you get the idea! ( my oscar is probly happy since all the fatheads I bought are swimming with him right now!)

River Rat, I fish a ton on the river from my boat, and did a bit of shore fishing in the summer. If you don't mind me asking, what depth of water are you fishing, and I assume its an eddy. Thanks!

I dont know the exact depth because Ive never waded this stretch, but I am assuming that its between 3 and 5 feet deep and no its not an eddie just slight current changes is what I look for ex. slow water to fast water now with that said..... would the fish still be on that pattern everywhere in the river NO the warm water discharge of the nuke plant keeps the water very warm. I dont know exaxt temps but Im guessing water temp yesterday was around 40-45.... so this area is way differet then like the Elk River area or the Anoka Area thats my .02 cents

Thanks for the 411. I've fished the Monti area for years, but not this late in the year. The majority of my fall fishing, the last several years, has been chasing the big toothy critters. I spent nearly every spare hour I had, on the stretch from monti to elk river. From about '90 to '98. Anyway, thank again for the info. Looks like I've definitely been missing the boat.

I agree the smallies on still hitting and fighting hard as they did a couple months ago and not just in Monti. Water level has dropped and clairty increased to about 3.5 feet. Fish slower and deeper. 4-7 feet is where we found em. Riverrat pretty much summed it up with the tips and tactics. Good post sir! We did the same but in a different area.

I was just wondering if you guys have ever caught a smallie and his mouth was so tore up it looked like he had been hooked about a million times and peope just tore the hook out? I caught one the other day that put up the fight of a 6+ pound smallie and only went about 17-18 inches and was real healthy but when I went to unhhok him his mouth was so tore up it was unbelievable (top, bottom , sides) I thought maybe he had a fishing addiction to (couldnt stay off the hook cool.gif) just throwing that out there, Im bored and really wished summer was back,

I've seen that on smaller fish. We always crimp down the barbs on the jigs or whatever we're using. Except crankbaits. You may loose a couple, but the ones that you do get the hook comes out so much easier.

I'm jealous that you guys were able to get out fishing this last weekend! I was planning on going but the lady thought otherwise frown.gif. Oh well. At least I have FM to keep me from slipping into a Bass Shakes Coma!

I finally put the gear away last night and have plans to tune my reels in the coming weeks. A bass fisherman has to have something to do all winter long tongue.gif besides read bass mags and watch bass shows.

BM, you could go ice fishing. It's a whole new way and you can hit spots that you've never been to before! wink.gif

Nothing to fear... except God.

Hey now... I'm not THAT "big". I'm just a normal guy... I got the name BigMike from one of my youth groups that I worked with. I was 6'2'' 240 (ok so I'm big boned tongue.gif), and they were just teenagers at 5'2' 140... hence the nickname "bigmike".

As for ice fishing, I'm from California and don't fair well with the idea of fishing through a 8" hole... Maybe if we cut out a huge hole I could throw some topwater! grin.gif

Actually I think Ebass & BigLakeBa$$ have convinced me to give it one try... I hope I hate it, 'cause I can barely afford my open water fishing addiction!

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉
