Any ice reports on shields lake?

Is it starting to ice up at all?

If the weather man is right, it is going to get cold next week. Single digits for lows. That should make some ice for next saturday. Hoping to hit shields saturday afternoon.

I just drove by my favorite (Bohemian Bay) on Shields today. I would have checked the thickness of the ice but the spot where I and just about every one else, usually accesses the lake had a gate and a no trespassing sign on it. I am going to have to do some investigating to find out other legal ways of accessing the lake from that shore line. Just thought people would want to know.

Any new reports on the ice at shields?

I believe that is the bay that I fish, right of the dirt road there with a small parking area? That is the only place I have ever fished on that lake.

I have fished that bay too, the bay that is by the dirt road, The old guys call it Kaderlick bay, am not to sure it is or is not public land, gate and fence may not be legal, could check with a c.o. or county assesor.

My dad checked with the local Game Warden and was told that because the no trespassing sign on the gate is not signed, among other reasons, it is not legally posted and you can

walk around the gate and be well within your rights.

I was also thinking that the road right-a-way is 33 ft from the center on township roads and if a county road its 65 ft.If that is the case there should no be an issue anyway because anyone can use a rightaway and once you are on the water you are free to go.

Last thing we want is to have local landowners mad at icefisherman.

There have been many issues of garbage left, trashing done, late night noises, etc. that's the reason for the no trespassing signs. It's not the only lake with this problem.

Please pickup garbage and be polite.

Thanks for piping up with the common sense Val!!!

Seems some people just don't care or have any other respect for other people's property.

I wonder how they would feel if I parked my truck in their front yard for a couple of days, since it is within 33 feet of the road and there isn't any "no tresspassing" signs???!!!

Go ahead and park there!!! I wouldn't surprise me if you ended up with cut tires...............

Nice people!!! Good grief!!!!!!!!

If it says no trespassing, it is no tresspassing. There is a cattle pasture fence just down the road..........maybe you want to cut the fence to get access?????

What are you people thinking???

BIG G, I never trespass and never will. So I hope that wasn't pointed at me. I will find a legal way onto the lake and I always pick up after myself.

I just hop ethey rmove the sign. I hope they are just trying to keep people safe. Who knows but I will be fishing there somewhere next week.

Back in the 70's the "access" at Kaderlik's bay was to walk to the house, pay $1 and launch your boat. To the best of my knowledge, it's private property, so please, do not enter the lake there without permission. why not just walk to the house across the road and ask? If they turn you down, go the the public access and walk.

i did not say any thing about parking there did I or about a crossing any fence. if i was riding a snowmobile or 4 wheeler in the ditch and went onto the lake there that would be wrong, I think you can ride in the ditchs right??. And there are no parking signs along the road, so you cant park there. I know it is a bad deal there, I use to pay the old guy that was there and give him fish that were cleaned. I have talked to new people that live there and that is why they closed it was the garbage and all the people that disrepected it. ITs a bad deal all around.

Isn't the road still marked with No Parking signs anyway? I was there last year and law enforcement was out writing parking tickets. That access was never a good access point even when the gate did not exist. Unless there was ice thick enough to drive on, there were limited places off the road to park.

It is a good distance from the access, but not impossible.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
