Bruledrifter,

I went and stopped at a local bait shop and they had said that they have been selling bait to a couple of guys who have been goin out onto Caribou (nuts perhaps). So I drove out to the lake and hadn't seen any signs of fishing activity but I punched through the ice with my spud and it showed about 3 1/2 to 4" of ice. I didn't have my tape measure with this time. I'm hoping for Crappie on Saturday. I'll make another run on Friday and give you another report or a call or both.

Myself, Surface Tension and BD110 went up to a secret hole we found. Only about 1-2" of ice but we fished out to 11' of water. Scarey at times but we were prepared. Only caught small Perch. This heavy snow will screw all the ice making up until we get some REAL cold. Looks like snow off and on for a few days now. This will probably set most places around here back a week. I will be out searching for fishable ice though this weekend. Ill keep ya posted.

Man I'm just about to CRACK! We got the snow up here too but it was 10 this morning and my thermo says 0 right now. We're making ice now. Definetly cooler than expected given the forecast. I know exactly where I'm going this weekend. I've been thinking about it for weeks. Everyone be careful, catch fish, and enjoy this great sport we call Icefishing .

Friend lives on caribou and says there is a good 4" of ice. A guy on grand lake said there was a 4 wheeler on grand who knows.

Be carefull out there. This snow and now rain will weigh what little ice down and force water on top. This will eat away at ice. We neeed some cold weather without snow but the forecast is calling for snow tonight. Doesnt look good for our Poutfest or early ice meet on Fish at this time. COME ON COLD WEATHER!

Cameron and i fished boulder friday and yesterday. We got into a few dinky eyes on friday, but last nite was pretty slow. There was a good 4 inches on boulder, yesterday we walked out about 150 yards. The snow and the weather have been screwing with the ice, melting and refreezing the surface ice, but there was enough ice there that it wasn't a big deal.

Thursday a buddy and i walked out onto fish, about halfway between the dam and high banks. there was 3 inches there on thursday, and i would imagine that its close to six by now. We didn't walk very far out at all, so i can't say what the ice farther out is like, but the whole lake was frozen over.

It's that time fellas grin.gif, just be careful. I think we might try nichols this evening.

hey porter, what are you doing tuesday?

I have most of the day off and would like to get out up here. I fished balsam for a few hours this weekend and didn't have much luck, not enough ice to get to my spots. anyways, hope to see some of you guys out there soon!

Northlander,

Sounds like you got into som efish eh? It is good to hear they are biting somwhere. What species did you get into and what kind of techniques? I am really new to these lakes and any info to go on would be nice. I hope to hit boulder or fish with deepdiver and quikstrike some time this week. Any info to get started with would be much appreciated. Until we see ya out there. Good luck.

keep fishin'

Walleye king I caught 5 walleye and 3 pike. All came on a JR's Tackle Gold/glow red Flasher spoon or a red glow go devil. I did catch 1 early on a glow/green angel eye. Nothing would hit my bobber rod with a glow red hook and splitshot. Banging bottom to atract fish seemed key, then slowly wiggle and jig up to 2ft. off bottom. Most hit 8" to a 2 foot off bottom. I was only in 8.5' of water by weeds.

Managed to get out for a few hours last night with IlltakewhatIcanget. Went out of highbanks on fish, fair amount of portables out on the lake as well as snowmobiles and 4 wheelers. We Managed to bring in two walleys and a pike. Walleyes were caught on teardrops with small crappie minnows both in glow one in red glow. Caught both within seconds of each other thought we were on to a hot bite. Then zzzzzzzz. 5 inches plus where we were at. How bout that fish lake gathering Steve?

Went out on Fish last night. 2 eyes and 2 perch on a green glow rat-finky. It felt good to wet a line again.

Kingr, where were you fishin?

Cheffrey's right, there's definitely enough ice for that fish lake gathering, but now all we need is some fish grin.gif

Cheffrey, we better let someone else pre-fish, or it'll be a long day on the ice tongue.gif

me and walleye king hit fish tonight but it looks like we missed the bite. i got skunked and walleye king got one small walleye. i have noticed a lot of people up in this area go very small for walleyes, (small jigs with crappie minnows) is this a common practice up here? the lakes i grew up fishing we would use slightly larger spoons tipped with a head of a minnow.

Where did ya go kent? We were out on sunday and it was pretty slow in about 9 FOW. We'll figure that lake out someday...

Are you gonna be able to make that fish lake gathering? Sounds like a good time and maybe we can sneak up and fish next to Northlander so we don't get skunked blush.gifgrin.gif

It wont matter with you guys. You could be in my house and get skunked. You have to set down the adult beverages and jig every once in a while. shocked.gif

Anyway I didnt do much better last night on Fish. I got 2 nice eyes and should have had 3 others. Had to really downsize. Wound up with a 1/8th oz. glow green go devil on one rod and a glow red JR's Flasher Jig on the other. One side glows red the other glows green. Only 2 fish on a full minnow the rest were bangin bottom and slowly raising with just a minnow head. That front must have slowed them down. I had several nice fish come in but they didnt want what I was offering at the time. I have had reel good luck with smaller gold/orange pimples up there but nothing would even look at it last night. Ill be out Thurs after work. Try another spot I think.

My buddy and I did about the same as Northlander, and considering we were within 15 yards of him, it makes sense I guess. 1/2 on glow green demons and 1/2 of them jigging. I also got one nice jumbo perch on the demon too. Very nice night to be out and plenty of ice, even saw some 4 wheelers racing around. Anyone else having any luck?

      Thanks for the updates!

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

saweet to hear........and an extra week sure isnt gonna hurt.

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
