New Ice Report 12/1

Recommended Posts

From what I read on the Walleye Retreat website, and when I called Morris Point around 7p.m tonight. They said looking out from Morris Point there is ice as far as they can see, as well as ice on the bays..and yes including 4-mile. The Walleye Retreat website says possibly 4-5 inches on 4 mile, however no guarentees. The person at MP told me that if tonight gets as cold as planned and no wind, hopefully it will freeze over all the way and that way the wind cant get at it. Looks like it froze out quite aways last night, and with tonight, it could be a done deal!!! Just thought I would tell everyone what I found out, and maybe you will sleep better, I know I will.

From Walleye Retreat:

December 1, 2004: Just took a drive to look at the lake and there is ice on the big lake as far as you can see out there! Just froze over last night. There is a pileup of ice way out there so must be open water past that and we have a strong north wind today that must be breaking it up some way out there. The Rainy River also has a thin layer of ice across it near Wheeler's Point and out to Four Mile Bay, which is also frozen over. The river does have some open spots where the wind is hitting it hard. I did see a couple of ATV 4 wheelers head out of Morris Point Resort onto Four Mile Bay and they have a fish house set up on the bay. It is the only house out there so far. I heard the bay has 4-5 inches but can't verify this for sure as we haven't ventured out there yet. But things are looking up. Keep your fingers crossed that the ice stays and doesn't blow away.

However, the man at MP said nothign of this piled up ice and said he only could see ice as far as he could look.

Have a good rest of the night!

That makes things interesting. I was planning on coming up on the 8th and today had decided to delay till the 15th. I'm still flexible and might have to come up after all.

I work in the weather field and forecast it as a hobby agst the big boys. You guys gettin' nervous about icing' the woods a week before Christmas need not worry. A big cool down is coming for the middle of next week with lows well below zero and higs struggling to reach 10 above for at least several days. It comes down to the wind and any snow that falls and insolates the potential ice making weather.

I wouldn't sweat it, the woods will be fishable in most locations come a week.

Keep your stick on the ice.

Oh man, it got down to around 4 degrees last night, winds at 5-7, not that bad at all, should have froze last night. If the ice gods are good to us, cant wait to talk to the people and up there and see what they say! I think we are going to be in buisness real soon!

I just got off the phone with MercMan, he brought his boat up to Adrians yesterday, and they are heading up river to find open water. The bay is completely frozen over, with a little open water in front of Adrians. He said he would give me call when they get up to Birchdale,I'll keep you posted.

Look like they got a perfect day up there today, high of 12 and very little wind, should have mostly sealed the deal.!

Can anybody verify that there was a house out on 4-mile bay as stated on a earlier post?? Maybe somebody was hallucinating when they seen the house or we have some boys with a big pair of ba??s to be out in a house already on 4-mile bay.

Please confirm my qusetion and be exact with location.

thank god for cold weather. blush.gifblush.gifblush.gif

Tweezel:

Yes, the lady at walleye retreat told me so, both on the phone and on her website. Also the guy at Morris Point said he saw some people head out to the 4-mile bay area as well. 4-5 inches of ice is what i heard, thats pretty safe as long as they dont head out farther.

6 degrees right now in Baudette. Looks like we'll be coming up Wednesday after all.

Better start making my list and checking it twice.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
