Scenic Tackle Go Devils.....

Recommended Posts

I am looking at my winter tackle and some of Scenic Tackle's Go Devils are in my mitt right now. These are designed primarily as an ice fishing tool, but do not forget open water for these too. During these colder times, I have been know to haul the boat down to the river for a day on the water. Actually I prefer this over ice fishing.

There are times when the plastics that are so hot at this time just won't do it and a person has to start digging a bit deeper into the memory banks for things that trigger lethargic fish. A jig/ minnow will often do it as will a blade bait. Hair can start up in a blink. One of the most often overlooked bait-types is one that the Go Devil fits into....that being a purely vertical jigging spoon.

Baits of this nature have their own inherent action which seems to stimulate the strike response in even neutral fish when jigged slowly on a tight line. These particular units come equipped with hyper sharp, "blood" treble hooks and in colors that are meant for fish attraction, not the eye.

As mentioned, they should be fished straight up and down, varying the jigging action to suit the fish. Tipping with a minnow head will up the ante. I will often simply give the unit a shot of liquid scent, cod liver oil being preferred, and fish them bareback. I will also hang a 3/4 inch piece of a scented twister's tail on one of the hooks. The compact weight/size makes these an excellent profile bait as well....during the winter months this can be an issue while on the water or on the ice. With a variety of sizes available, anglers of either venue can find one size for their particular needs. The bottom line is that we need to be willing to look well past what a product is marketed for to truely find its full potential. My winter "open water" arsenal is about 40% ice fishing equipment....mostly pure vertical jigging lures such as these. And they have found their way into my spring and fall tackle as well.

The full story on these baits can be found by clicking on any of the "Our Sponsor" spots in each forum or by clicking on the "TackleCity" banners found on-site. Or you can go to ScenicTackle.com. My personal favorite color is the "glow red". One word sums it up...Dynamite! Crappies and walleye/sauger. On ice or open water! Fall , spring, and in between! Check these gems out. You will not be sorry.

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
