Millstone Magic

I didn't know millstone was deep enough to hold fish. What do you catch out there?

It must be hard to get slimy green water to freeze. Or else there's too much cow "runoff" warming the water. grin.gif

2 guys were out there last Thursday about 150 yds from the landing.

"Your bobbers down!"

Does anybody have a contour map of this lake? I dont have it in my lake map book and I couldn't find it on the DNR's website.

I fished it once last season with luck and it seemed very shallow.

I also heard it is just a holding pond for walleyes...is there truth to that?

There's no map available for this lake. But, for 20 bucks I'll draw you one...It was a DNR/walleye rearing pond. It's deepest spot was 7'...most of the lake was 5' with weeds to the bottom of the ice. The DNR was patrolling the lake intensely...citing lots of people for limit violations...The walleyes we caught ranged from 14"-16" in size...perfect sandwich size! Delicious too, for poop-eating waldo's...huh, Duane (dewoutdoor)?

Here I am!!! Had a problem with my log-in name when FM changed their system, so they started me up again with a new name..."BackHerUp" (refers to my job as a truck driver).

Is the ice walkable yet? I have never fished Millstone before but plan to this year. A friend on mine was running over to check out the ice today. He is fishing Green Mountain tonight. He said there is 3-4" inches. I may have to run over and check it out myself. If I make it out I will report back.

i live near there and i think its fished out now, when it was just me and another guy there you would only fish for 5 minutes before you got your limit. Amazing. But you never now it might surprise us again-.

Also, up in bemidji right now, is there any ice down there?

I talked to the fisheries office in Montrose. They said that Millstone and Green Mountain are fished out. I can believe it from the people that I have talked to so far.

As far as ice. None. I live in Howard Lake and I still let the dog swim at the public landing a few nights a week. Not even any ice around the edges from what I have seen. We are waiting though.

West of Buffalo. In fact I think that it is north of Maple Lake now that I think of it. It is on the DNR website if you look at the lake finder. It is it that general area.

2 weeks ago there was 3-4" of ice...but that has all but melted. We're forecast to have temps in the 20's (for highs) Monday and Tuesday, so real cold, ice-producing nights...problem is it's also supposed to be windy...I don't think we'll be icefishing anywhere in central to south central Minnesota before Christmas...the weather isn't getting cold enough and after all, they barely have 9" of ice at Lake of the Woods and strong winds are forecasted for this week, so the ice will move and probably break apart...they won't be icefishing (safely) up there either! Mille Lacs is still wide open (drove by it yesterday)...skim ice along shorelines everywhere, but that won't freeze up unless we get a serious Arctic cold-snap from Canada...and frankly, I don't wish that upon anyone...makes getting up for work miserable!

I'll agree that the last couple of weeks have not been the coldest but I remain cautiously optimistic as far as walkable ice by next Friday. Dutch Lake in Howard Lake(the town) has a good three inches near the shore while just a small part of the lake is open and I suspect that other lakes of similar sizes are in the same situation. That’s nothing a few nights in the teen's can't take care of. I'll be home from school on Thursday or Friday and I plan on starting the ice fishing season then.

Yeah...well, wishful thinking ain't gonna make good ice, sub-zero nights do and there aren't any in the near forecast, but...good luck to ya anyway!

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to be icefishing too...but, my gut feeling is, early to mid January...

Good to see you man! I kinda thought that might be you. I was hope'n the ice would return when you did! I bet Shakopee up by Onamia has ice. I honked at some braver souls than I out on green Mt. today. Is work slowing down at all?

No...unfortunately work is still in "full -force". I've been told it could slow down some. I could use the break. I work 10-12 hour days/5 days a week and then I've got weekend baby duty with my son Marc (a 1 yr old), because my wife works 10 hr. days (both Saturday and Sunday). I figure I wasn't going to get out much this winter anyway, so the fact that the ice isn't forming yet is good for my conscience and soul!

Maybe I'll see you out at Buffalo this winter when-and-if I do get out!

My dad and I checked Millstone tonight. About 5 inches of crystal clear ice all the way out to the center where we fished. I'm not sure what was worse the fishing or the wind and cold. I think the front that is moving through had shut things down for the day...no walleyes. The air temp when we got home was 9 degrees and the wind was gusting near 30 mph which makes for a cold wind chill and one heck of a time putting up the portable on smooth ice.

Anybody else been out there?

The only thing we caught yesterday was a cold. I figured it would be a tough day with the front moving through, but my dad and I both were bored and itching to get out. We went to Millstone in search of some calm winds...needless to say we didn't find them.

As hard as that little slough got fished last year...I doubt there'll be many walleyes left in there, besides with all the weeds, I couldn't imagine there being much oxygen left when she opened up in the spring...I'll check it out next Saturday, I'll know right away if she's dead...
