Varmint hunting?

A buddy and I are going to do some predator hunting this winter for coyote and fox here in northern Minnesota. The only problem is my access to a suitable weapon. I've got a Winchester Model 70 .270, but feel that's a bit much and am concerned about pelt damage. I've got a Ruger 77/22 .22 long rifle, but feel that's underpowered for coyotes. I'm also contemplating using my Browning BPS 12 gague with a full choke and 3" high velocity 3's or 4's, but realize the range with the shotgun would probably be 40 yards or so. I can't afford a new gun right now. Does anyone know if ammo companies offer a varmint round for the .270? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My buddy's set though, he's got a .223 AR-15.

Hey catmaster, if you could find out the particulars on those shells your buddy is using I'd be most appreciative. Does he have alot of pelt damage with those shells?

I think the answer is obvious... BUY A NEW GUN!!!!

I think the .223 is the cheapest good shooting varmint gun around. Buy one of them. grin.gif

If your going to use a shotgun you should set up down wind of your buddy with the rifle. That way if any coyotes circle downwind you can be there to take them out. You can also call in some thicker cover with a shotgun because your shots will be alot closer. I have a buddy that hunts with me and thats all he uses. Most of the time in heavy cover where our shots are 50 yards or less he gets most of the action. I would say to use copper plated BB's for a shotgun load. works way better than 2's. Stay away from steel shot also, it doesnt have the punch that the lead does. I think you'll be surprised at how much action you see with a shotgun, sometimes my buddy and I trade off so I can get some shooting in also. I think last year even hunting in some of the more open areas he probably got just as many shots as I did with my 220 swift. The key is to put the guy with the shotgun downwind about 20 yards.

BMC,

Do you reload for your .270? If you do or you have access to a reloader you will be able to play around with some different bullet weights and velocities. And I would check into some 3" buffered copper plated BBs or 4 buck for some harder hitting predator loads out of your twelve banger.

Ditto's on the #4 Buck, most of our fox/coyotes are taken with a shotgun while calling here in central MN.You're being from the northern part of the state I'd definetly opt for a shotgun.About the only time we don't have at least one shotgun on a set is hunting the Dakota's.

Well, I did some web surfing for .270 ammo on the net and found Remington Express ammo in 100 grain for my .270. Lo and behold, our local hardware store even had a box on the shelf! I bought that one and had him order me another. I'm thinking this will do for coyotes, but I'm not ruling out bringing the 12 gauge eihter. Now if this dang wind ever stops, I can get out and sight my rifle in with this new ammo.

I have never shot a coyote or even shot a deer with a rifle for that matter ( good ol' slug gun for me ) but i have a buddy that shot a deer with 85 grain loads from a .243 and that had a nice hole through it and I have also seen what a 100 grain bullet does to a deer and there is also a nice hole so im thinking it will definatly knock over a coyote but there might be lots of pelt damage.

Remington makes a nice 90 grain PSP round for the .270. If you need them, I can provide some for you. They are BLAZING fast.

P.M. me......

If you can in no way shape or form shell out under 200 bucks for a .17 hmr or a .22 mag, just look for full metal jacket bullets for your .270.

Get those, and try not to hit any bone.

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend
