Just went out on the south side of Big Turtle this morning. Spud bar went thru with ease. 1½" about 15 ft. from shore.

Most all of the small lakes in the area have at least 3" of ice right now. As long as the temps stay below freezing and the we have no snow it will continue to make ice every night. Remember, safety first!!! If you are one of those that put that first fish ahead of your life, wear a life vest, have picks with, go with a friend, push a portable in front of you to displace your weight, and check the ice often on the way out. For the rest of us, we should be walking 4+ inches this weekend!!!!

Talked to a friend that had Dave Genz out on a lake east of here yesterday. 3+ inches and the crappies were bitting.

I spoke with Bro last night, he's only been out a couple times, but says the fish are biting where he's been.

My luck hasn't been as good, we've picked up a few 'gills, but mostly small. Only three crappies to speak of thus far. We're North of Bemidji.

All right - you guys are driving me cazy! I can't wait to get out there, but it looks like it will be another couple weeks before I can even think about it.

If we can just get a good cold night Bemidji should go. The South end has skimmed over a couple times now, but blown right open with the slightest breeze. frown.gif

Keep us posted guys!

After looking at the weather, it looks like there should be a little more ice by this weekend and then a little warm up and then some downright cold weather next week. The next weekend looks like it should be good enough for anyone on foot.

JN, I'll head out there tomorrow or whenever you want to go. I've got free time now that I'm retired from that stupid game! wink.gif

Hey, Bobb-O.

I was the person you met yesterday at Taber's. I went to Larson yesterday; 4 inches of good ice out there. We fished from about 3:30-5, and didn't have much luck. I think we should have tried out a little deeper like you said. We fished in about 17 feet, where I caught them last year. I'll definitely go deeper if I go back there again. There were a couple people when we got there, and they left before us. When we were leaving, there were 3 groups of people that came out fishing.

By the way, I had Intro to Planning with ya last year with Larry Young.

Another day on the ice. 3" on the nose N. of Bemidji. We found quite a few 'eyes in 16-19' and only a couple pike on the tip-ups. Things are looking good. The ice is very smooth, it's kind of scary!

Been out the last two days. A couple small pike, a few tiny perch, one small shiner minnow, about a dozen small gills, one 12 inch crappie along with a few smaller ones, but no eyes yet. The fish we found were very slow moving until dusk. Two different lakes with the same pattern. The panfish were deep and mostly suspened. I don't know what this snow is going to do to the ice though. It is great to get back on the ice.

Caught the 'eyes from 3:30 until 5:40. A lull from 4:30-5:00.

Went out again tonight and only managed one 'eye on a lake S. of Bemidji.

dam rain. This is what I dont get now days for the weather, Low of 10degrees at night for a couple of days. then a warm front comes through over last night along with some rain, taking care of the snow and prob. some ice too. Idk if the ice is going to be too safe now, hopefully that little snow on top helped block it out. Planning on going out today. Weather for next couple of days are not looking so cold, lows in the middle teens-which will make ice slowly. Oh well, a couple of weeks yet for the permnaments!

-good luck

  • 2 weeks later...

Lake Bemidji,

As of Saturday South end 6-8 inches, Library Bar 7-10 inches...

That is the only two areas I was able to check in the nasty wind and cold....

Good Luck,

Beef

couple cars driving in front of the public access towards the NW end of the lake, about 8-10. Should be drivable by this weekend if the temps are going to be highs in negatives.

-good luck

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.
