Pheasant Report

Well I managed to get out for another day in the field last Wednesday. Luci and I headed down to Dodge County to hunt some WMA's. The first one looked great! I was sure we would have some action, but all we found was a dead hen! We walked a lot. The next one we got too I ran into some guys that had just walked half of it and were done. They said the got up a few roosters and some hens. They got one but missed the others. They said the birds were getting up in some thick nasty stuff and the shooting was tough. I walked the areas they said they didn't and again it looked Great! but no luck. A lot of walking and no birds. At about 3:30 I started road hunting north and I saw two hens hunker down in a ditch. I pulled off a ways up and headed down there with Luci. As I got close to the ditch they were in I crossed sides. As soon as I could see the ditch they were in I saw a rooster hunker down and run south down the ditch. Next thing I know two hens flush and six!! roosters. I was caught off guard. I missed as they were kinda far. I think I should of at least got one. Oh well. I saw were they landed and I got permission. I walked back there and Luci got Two seperate hens up but no roosters. They outsmarted us.

Any ides guys? Thanks Tim

If you can find someone to hunt with wait till we get some snow more the better and it gets really really cold then go walk the thinckest nasiest stuff you can find, ive had my best days pheasent hunting walking frozen sloughs that are on public land that people cant hunt all year, or put on the knee boots and walk the sloughs now, big sloughs with about 4 inches of water on public land can be great hunting because most guys will only walk the edges the birds will get pushed up onto the high spots way out in the middle. Also dont over look tall cane and willows, thin strips are usually better you can walk them and take the dog and have a buddy post up. I mostly hunt down by Comfrey or down into the Truman area where areas like ive mentioned can be found on public land.

I'm going to get out this week.

Have Lab will travel! He likes sloughs and so do I.

Sibley county --Arlington area -- has been very poor. There are some birds but very few compared to the last five which have been farily good. Corn is about 95% gone still not seeing those roosters. frown.gif

Yesterday in two hours we had our 4 birds. We saw 6 other roosters and about 20 hens. First couple roosters were a bit skiddish but as the wind came up along with the snow that was on the ground the roosters along with all the hens held as tight as i've ever seen. Shorthairs would point and we had too literally kick them to get them too fly. Hit one spot this morning and got 1 nice bird, saw 3 more roosters and about 8 hens. Hens held tight again today but the roosters not as much.

Got out for a couple hours this morning. Hit the Belgrade area. Got my two roosters fairly quickly. pointed and flushed 4 more on the way out. Only saw 1 hen. Public land is only getting better as time goes on, I saw very few people out today and it was a pretty good day to be out.

Was in the Marshall area on Sat. Wind, snow, and more wind, tough hunting. We managed 5 rooster and 4 hen flushes, piss poor shooting left us hungry. I didnt even get a shot, my dog got them up for everyone else. Still nice to get out. Have to hit it hard this weekend. Maybe SD will work this time. If not then SW MN will have to do. My chessie continues to lock up on birds occasionally. If they hold tight, he wont move a muscle. I have to tell him to get em. Most of the time they are hens in thin cover. Still cool to see. Only 30+ days left, so make the best of it.

Hey Brian!

I should have left you my cell #. I was hunting within 10 miles of you at my father-in-laws place. Daisy and I walked into a food plot he has on his property and the field just exploded with about 20 birds. I picked out a rooster and dropped it. Unfortunately, it ran and Daisy couldn't find it. There was so much bird scent she was going nuts.

We also hit some WPA's and WMA's by Brooten and Terrace. But they were absolutely getting pounded by hunters. We had a hard time finding places that were not being hunted when we got there.

Are you available next saturday afternoon to hit my Dad's place? Let me know. We got home late from Brooten so I haven't checked messages yet. Later sir.

Hey Joel give me a call if you can today. I got your message late and you were already gone frown.gif. I drove up that way yesterday morning to see if I could find the house but I couldn't remember.

mistermom, you're hunting in my home territory, I've hunted some of those big management areas up by Terrace. I've used the theory of getting farther away from Willmar (and hunters) but as you noted they all get pounded. What we need now to help the pheasant hunting is a weather event, like 6 inches of snow.

Hey Blackjack!

I love that area around there! I would only add to your suggestion that we get 6 inches of ice before we get the 6 inches of snow. I get out that way at least once a month. We should hook-up sometime when I'm out! I'll be out around Christmas.

Mistermom, I agree with the six inches of ice first, nothing worse than that insulating layer in the cattails. Trying to tell myself that the ice is too thin and slick to venture out beyond the cattails this weekend but the pull is strong, love those late season birds busting out of the cattails!!! The wife wants to go to St. Cloud on Sat, that reduces one day of temptation. Post if you get up in the area, we can get out, I have a couple of good late season spots. Problem is, I'll have to blindfold you on the way there smile.gif

You don't have to worry about me Blackjack. I've hardly made a dent in the population this year. BDR on the other hand....... That boy can shoot!

We'll have to try for a hook-up around the end of the month or next year. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the offer and I'll wear a blindfold if necesary (while holding my GPS).

Kettle,  just how much snow is on the ground up there??   Looking like some good ice making temps up there the next 3 nights . 3 consecutive nights  below 0. 2 double digits below

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.
