I went by Little Detroit on Wednesday and there was ice almost all the way across. I also went by Prairie and it was frozen all the way across and there were a lot of lakes that were frozen in between the two. Anyone else have any reports that are more current? Is anyone else got the ice fishing itch real bad?

Some moron had a snowmobile on little det. you can see the tracks running along the shore line. When you get infront of the access accross from Rossman Ave you can see where it went through the ice.

Should be fishing by the end of this week. Friend of mine lives on Deadshot Bay any he said it hed 2 inches about 30ft from shore. Snow slowed things down a little, smaller lakes and shoreline ice should have 3-4 inches by the end of the week if the wind and temps stay down. Big D is about completely iced over. Get your gear ready!!!!

I noticed that some of the small stocking ponds are in pretty good shape. About three inches on the shallower ones.

Any action on stocking ponds yet?

Should be ready to rock and roll in eastern clay county by this weekend. Please be careful, some open spots yet this morning, many active spring areas..Use your spud and feel your way around. Remember a good length of rope, spikes fdor crawling out, possibly a floatation device and ALWAYS a good partner! Have fun and be safe!! Paul

Paul -

"East clay county..."

That's my old (and sometiems current) stomping grounds. I grew up right on the Co. line just off 34. Lived in Clay, across the road was OT. Not a lot of guys get over that way. Think you and I need to talk/compare notes sometime...

Cheers,

RK

Kirk's BP in Hawley was selling a lot of bait today -- I wonder where they are going?

Saw a guy out on Little Detroit yesterday. All by himself about 300 yards from shore and about 50 yards from what looked like some open water. Going fishing tomorrow morning, around 3.5 inches where I'll be. Give a report tomorrow, wish me luck.

heh, heh, sounds dangerous, think I'll wait a couple more weeks myself and do a little more pheasant hunten.

Isn't there an area(a spring perhaps) you should steeer clear from near the north access on Lida? thought I read about it last year, but have never been on the lake (yet) ice fishing.

Anyone think it'll be just as tuff for wallys this winter as it was this past summer?

I decided to make the trip out to Detroit Lakes this afternoon. Here's the update. Pelican is completely open and so is Lida. Lizzie has some ice on the bays, but the middle is still open. Tamarak is iced over and so is Prairie and Sand. Prairie had to ice houses out in the northwest bay. You may have problems getting on with all of the private property. Lake Ida was iced over. The middle must have just closed up last night. There were to ice houses out there, but they were very close to shore. I did punch some holes on a very small lake and it had anywhere from 1.5 to 3 inches max. Spud bar was a necessity. Cormorant had ice in the bays, but I did not drive around the whole thing. Franklin also has ice, but looks very sketchy. There are still some areas with open water, but the lake should close up tonight. Hope this helps everyone out. After today it would be hard for me to believe there is more than 3 inches anywhere in the area. Enough scouting for now, I need to wet a line and tomorrow will be the day.

Fished a few times this week, once on Sallie and twice on Dead Shot bay. Missed 2 waldo's on Sallie and my buddy stuck a 28.5 incher on Dead Shot. Heading out in 10 minutes to fish a small crappie lake I fish quite a bit. WalleySnob, heading to Selkirk next weekend with a couple buddies, should be a good trip, the fish are biting from the people I've talked to.

Just got back from fishing, no slabs but one nice eye. Marked a few fish but coudn't get them to take. We weren't able to fish where we wanted to because the ice was only about 3 inches thick where we ended up fishing, only 60 ft from shore. Didn't dare venuring out any further, just not worth it. By the middle of next week things should be safer with the cold coming tuesday and wednesdy.

WalleyeSnob, if you'd like to make the trip with us, your more than welcome. Ed Carlson may join us as well, shoot a reply with your email and I'll get back to you. We're leaving Friday afternoon.

Went out to Little Pelican this morning with my brother. We got a couple of largemouth. The ice was three to three and a half inches thick. Too honkin' windy to stay out too long. Saw something kind of funny. Two guys had gone a lot farther out in the lake. When they were done, one guy jumped into their pullover shack and rode to shore. The other guy was running along side trying to steer it.

went for a little ride today to see what happened with the wind, and to my surprize, big C is froze over (wide open last night) and middle C, is nearly wide open again. pelican has a few smaller open spots left to go.

looked like someone on leif had plowed a large/huge ice rink, w/atv..?

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

saweet to hear........and an extra week sure isnt gonna hurt.

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆
    • Wanderer
I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
