Isn't there some type of formula on ice predictions? Something like x amount of degrees over a 6 hour period will add x amount of ice.

As a rule of thumb I have always been taught that in the early going a close to zero degree night will form about an inch in that night, but as far as an exact formula that is probably impossible to determine. There are a lot of different variables included in the ice forming process. You have to take in to consideration the wind, current of the lake or river you are fishing, amount of snow on the ice, and even the fish activity in the lake. These are just a few of the things that need to be considered. Now I may be proven wrong out there by someone but that is what I would think about coming up with a formula.

i guess some of the small lakes in my hometown south of here are icing over at night and blowing off during the day, a couple cold nights and calm days might do it for us. I would be the happiest person in the world if i get out on the ice this weekend.

Just went out and checked a few lakes near cloquet...all at least are skimmed all the way across as of 2:00 this afternoon. The ice is here to stay! My favorite crappie hole had 1" near shore. Wont be long now!

Shagawa, Burntside, Johnson, One Pine, and Birch are still rolling. Had a lot of wind yesterday however. Pretty still out there tonight. If Bside locks up in the morning, I have a date to go kiss it. Where's my chapstick?

Shagawa has a slush across the whole lake mostly. Another still cold night but daytime temps look mild the next few days.

Northlander,

Don't forget about your old buddy BD110 if you head out Sunday afternoon. With the way my luck has been going I would think it a safe bet if you want to catch some fish grin.gif. Just a few more days tell the Ice Fishing Show.

See ya,

Tom (BD110)

Well Fish Lake has a lot of open water. By the dam was wide open and it will be quite a while before you can even walk on it. Maybe the narrows will be walkable in a week. Come on cold weather!!!

Theres 2" on my lake. We need more cold stuff, 20 degrees at night and highs near 30 won't cut it.

Shagawa is locked up but spotty at best. Burntside is still trollable. I was in Blombergs in Babbitt yesterday and low and behold, there's a pic of a guy with an 18# pike he had just iced on Birch. My first thought, why did you keep an 18# pike? Second, how did you make it back. There's maybe 2 inches on Birch. We got an inch of snow or more last night and with the mild temps, I'll venture to say it'll be another week before I'm walking out. Be Safe Folks!

I have been working a lot the last week what is the ice conditions on the small lakes, I would assume the bigger lakes still have some open water. Did warm weather last night and today do a number on the decent Ice, I woud like to have at least 4 inches. I have a feeling there have been some guys out icefishing, any reports? Thanks AJ

Andy we got out 1 time but that was before the snow, rain and warm temps. Smaller lakes I usually have fished for a couple weeks by now arent even close. Poor weather for ice so far. I did hear Caribou had 4" but thats iffy now.

I was on Caribou today. We went out toward the 21' hole in the east side of the lake but was nervous so I didn't go out all the way. I did make it to about 17'. I checked the ice in a pretty big area around the west side of the point. While there was water on the ice there was a solid 4"-5" everywhere I tried, and when we left the ice was really forming again and making the sounds that early ice always makes. So hopefully we will have good ice all over before too long. Until then we can keep getting ready.

Fish Lake, theres guy traveling on foot out of High Banks to the Narrows and then to Float Plane Island.

She was making ice last night with temps around 0.

I've also heard of guys on Boulder. I don't think I'd venture to explore the nether regions of any of those lakes yet. Stick to the traveled areas and use caution.

I think we were the 'couple guys' on boulder. we went out from the fox, and had about 4 inches of ice. Still whacked with the spud though...

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Falls gone Gim, time to move to ice fishin!!👍

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!
    • Kettle
It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
