First time changing resorts. I am an avid fisherman and am looking for a change of scenery. Arnesen's name came up. Give me the reasons to go or not. Thanks

missinminnesota-

I've never fished out of Arneson's, I typically head out on my own. They do have a nice lodge though and they also run tracked vans out to their houses.

One thing to consider about Arneson's vs the majority of the other resorts on LOW is the area of the lake that they fish. Most of the resorts are based out of the Baudette/Rainy River area and fish past Pine Island, Lighthouse Gap, and out to some of the reefs on the east side. Arneson's, I believe, fishes Gull Rock Reef, 12 mile, and 16 mile reef and places in between.

I've had good success on both sides of the lake. Last winter was extremely good early on at the areas around Arneson's.

While I prefer the solitude of the NW Angle, when we fish the south side, we have gone out of Arnesons. This is going back to 1992.

We have always had a good time, and have been treated very well. They work hard to keep their houses on the bite. We have stayed in the cabins (very nice!) and in the sleepers. If you use the sleepers, I suggest you bring your own cookware.

If you really want good service, try and find an old John Deere JDX snomobile stocking hat and give it to Albert. Albert will love you forever, LOL.

We were up there one year, and all the snow was gone, and they had their houses pulled off. They still got us out, putting us in boats and pulling us out with ATVs. We had tremendous fishing that time, and they really went the extra mile to accomodate us.

GO - definately!

Myself, two college buddies and one of the college buddie's dad (follow that?) have been going to arneson's for the last 4 years... with another trip planned for 2005.

The one college buddy and his dad have been going up to arnesons long before the 4 of us started...

I've never had a complaint in the 4 years we've been up there... as others have said, they will, if possible, move you to where the fish are biting... They're a lot more likely to move you when they don't have as many people there (we've shifted our trips to fish on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday since most people go home on Sunday or Sunday night) and we get moved a lot more if the fish aren't bitting than when there are a lot more people.

If you're planning on going you should try and get your reservation in soon... they usually fill up quickly

Last Saturday TV fishing show, I believe it was Minnesot Outdoors, did a segment on Arenesons. Looked like some nice houses and track vans. Never fished there, but the segment was interesting. Good luck, and hang on. Bill

Go. They are a great bunch of guys. They get bigger every year but they still have a personal touch when it comes to service. Their houses are decent I have fished in nicer but they do the job. The vans are just about the nicest on the lake. There cabins are nice now. They used to have some dumpy ones when I first started to go there but they are all pretty nice now. It is fun to go back every year and see some of the familar faces of the guide. There are always some new faces but allot of the same old ones.

January '05 will be our groups 6th year going through Arnesen's. Great place they treat you well and do their best to put you on the fish. The cabins are nice and the lodge has pretty good food and drink. Highly recommended.

Stayed there last year and really enjoyed it. They have a great lodge and very nice people. We didn't catch the #'s there as have in passed years but got a 29" and 27" in the house over the 2 days, needless to say it made the weekend.

miss - its a great place, but they need a little more of a "after the fishing" fun, theres no pool table, bigscreens-that sort of stuff. But as far as the fishing, can't be beat(as far as resorts go). Thats why we go there, Oh and there Menu is Awesome!!

iff, so you'll be up there again..the same week? I'll be there 6th - 8th of Jan. Maybe I'll see this time...

g3- this'll be out 5th year, I live in cottage as well...

Go,

Arnesens is a wonderful resort, great atmosphere in the bar, nice fish cleaning shack, great location and fine dinning/housing. But I would only go to arnesens if you are going to fish out of portables. I find that they dont really take the time to put you on schools of fish which changes daily. So your fishing would be better if you move spot to spot every different day. And their ice shacks are a little petit.

I've been coming up to Arnesens Rocky Point for the past 3 years for my annual dose of ice, snow, fishing, beer, poker, etc. and they have always worked hard to ensure a good time. The cabins are warm & comfortable.

I'm looking forward to bringing the Vexilar up North to Arnesens again next month. I was the only guy in my group from Texas and the only guy with a Vexilar two years ago. Now I'm still the only guy from Texas, but there are more people in my group with Vexilars since I tend to catch more fish than the Minnesootans. grin.gif

Looks like that makes three of us in Cottage Grove. We should hook up and try some of the local waters.

Too bad there isn't any good water in or even in a 10 mile radious of cottage.

Arnesens-has been pretty good to us the past 5 years, with the great hospitality, lodge food, and of course the BEER..

Our group has done the best as far as number of fish and size, we tried 3 other resorts and just didn't get th e fish. The best jigs I've found are the gold buckshot tipped with a full minnow and anything presentation that is horizontal and glow, except blue, for some reason that color just does'nt catch fish for me .

How bout U's

The gold buck shot rattle spoon along with the glow chartuse angel eye jr. has done really well for me. I have also noticed that if the bigger lures are not working the little panfish lures work really well. You may miss some but they do produce some action when the bigger lures are not working. Also had some luck with the pearch color zip lure. Good luck.

I haven't been to Arnesons for a couple winters, but I sure miss it.

Paul with that big arse coon hat or whatever it was that he wore for a few years.

Albert and Dan draggin our butts out on the ice in the track vans.

It's great. By the time you get to your ice house, you have a new friend. Or those guys are really good actors, and pretend to carry an interesting conversation with all us morons packed in the vans. grin.gif

I like that place!

This will be my third year going out of arnesens and I have nothing but praise for the job they do.Last year after they dropped us off at our house they came back about two hours later and asked how we were doing. Not so good.So they packed us up and moved us.Put us on some fish. And I can't remember how many times we were asked how our stay was going so far. They will have their new LARGE track vans running this year and it should make for a nice trip out to the houses.Get the full rack of ribs, they are awesome!! tongue.gif

Will be up ther Jan.13-16 staying at the reef. Can't wait

Kettle,  just how much snow is on the ground up there??   Looking like some good ice making temps up there the next 3 nights . 3 consecutive nights  below 0. 2 double digits below

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.

I must be the only one hunting pheasants.   Went on Saturday for about 2 hours.  Stunning afternoon.  I got a double at the second spot.
