East Metro Lakes

Recommended Posts

I just moved to Woodbury and I was wondering if anyone could give me the names of a couple lakes in this area with some good crappie, sunnie or walleye fishing? Not looking for spots just some names so I can try my luck out on them ice fishing this winter. Thanks for the help.

I have fished BE and White Bear a lot. Just wondering if there was any small lakes nearby that would be fun to hit up. Thanks for the info.

I have lived in woodbury for about 7 years and have figured out a little of how and where to fish.

Northerns- Battle Creek (Mud Lake)- this has a lot of them as well as the potential for a big one.

Big Crappies- Powers (off 19)- it takes some work to figure out but if you can find them it has some awesome crappies. I even pulled a 9# walleye out of there a couple of years ago.

Also stick with the other lakes mentioned. They are all good waters to fish and will turn out fish all winter and even in the summer. Another note is that powers is really only fishable through the ice. Otherwise it gets choked with weeds. I hope you find all this useful and good luck onthe water.

Wall-i-king thanks for the info, do you have an email address? I would like to email you and ask you some questions about fishing and possibly get out with you this winter if you would like to. Or you can email me. My email address is [email protected].

Yeah, Battle creek does have decent pike, along with a few decent gills and crappies. Careful though, its got an aerator, best luck is around the deep hole. I heard good things about Phalen, Garvais, and other lakes in the chain as well. although I havnt fished them from the ice yet.

Stop in at blue ribbon in Oakdale they can probably give you some good pointers.

Having grown up right in Stillwater, I would suggest getting to know the good old St. Croix river. That river can be humbling, but as anything, the more you fish it, the more you learn. Keep an eye on the St. Croix river forum and you will also learn a lot. Big Carnelian can be ok too, but I usually prefer the river. You are also not far from Square Lake. You may want to try some trout fishing! There are huge pike in there, but because of the super clear water, they are tough to catch. The spearers get some dandys! There were also some other good lakes mentioned above. I just added my 2 cents.

Iceman,

I am living in Duluth this year but would have plenty of time to get out over first ice period. I could show you a few things prolly and perhaps learn a few things too. Let me know what you have in mind by shooting me an e-mail navr0012 (at) d (dot) umn(dot) edu I love teaching new people. I also agree with the guys here, the croix can be amazing or it can be really tough. I have also heard that it is fun to get into those sturgeon from time to time. Anyway shoot me a message and we can see what we can get together.

Iceman,

I live in Woodbury too. I fished Tanners, Jane, and powers last winter. Had some luck. I think this year I may try and learn Powers as it is only 5 minutes from the house. I'd be willing to trade info with you also. egunderson at csmmn dot com.

Hey guys,

we need to get together some night to fish Powers. I have spent a pretty good number of hours on the lake and can get you on them. I can't guarantee size on the crappies, as that has decreased in recent times, but I have caught a few right around 13" and I saw one pushing 16" or a little over come out of there a few years back. I would love to take you guys out if you would be willing. I always love getting on the ice. Gundy shoot me an e-mail lets find a time that works. It won't be too long now.

Wall-i-king, is there parking around Powers lake? Never fished it before. It is in woodbury or oakdale? Sounds like a good lake to hit early if it is shallow and freezes up fast. Even if the crappies aren't huge they are still fun to catch. I have fished Jane and Demontreville where the size is there but you can't get past all the 4"ers stealing your bait before the bigger fish can get to your lure. Kind of frustrating. I have seen quite a few nice sunnies in Jane while fishing for bass.

Yeah there is a parking lot right on the lake, and there is a canoe launch that a lot of people go out from. The lot is on the northwest side of the lake right off of Hwy 19 in Woodbury. It is not far from Oakdale. I would say prolly a mile south of 94. I would definitely recomend getting out there and giving it a shot. I have done really well but it takes some time to get to know it. Shoot me an e-mail and I might send you some tips to get you started out there. Good luck and bring on that ice.

mnfishinguy,

to start with I love the avatar. The simpsons are one of the best shows ever. As for the mini get together I would love to make it happen and while I can't promise fish I can at least show some of you guys how to get on them. Send me an e-mail with times you might be available and so that we can keep in touch. Look forward to hearing from ya.

Anyone here ever fish Colby? A friend and I did last year, lots of little perch, sunnies, and a crappie. Anyone know if any of the fish have some size to them?

I have mostly heard of people getting bullheads out of that lake but I think that the other fish that are in there are on the small side. I have never fished it my self and there may be monsters in there but I have never heard anything about big ones coming out of there.

Waliking, Iceman, thanks for the compliment on the avatar. I think the Simpsons is the best show ever, and unfortunatly Homer and I are starting to have a few things in common. We have the same hair line and as I get older I am starting to be built like him too!

I will have to take a better look at my schedule within the next week or two and I'll let you guys know what will work.

Should be fun if the ice ever comes.....

I'm ready for the ice!!! Let me know when you want to hit it. Hopefully we can get a nice little cold front. I fished colby in high school. We pulled some bullheads and a few small eyes.

Have the little lakes got anything for ice? Up here we are ice fishing already with more than 6" on most of the lakes. I am just wondering if I will be fishing over break. If any of you guys have been out or have any info on the ice post it here. Hopefully we will be able to eventually get out and chase some fish.

Haven't been by them lately. I will check on them tonite though. We caught the eyes on the West end right about in the middle. If you are going around the walking trail, there is a little point that the trees are cleared away and there is a bench now. Lots of bullheads in the lake to keep you interested.

Walliking, its not looking good. I wouldn't walk out on too many lakes yet. With highs in the upper 30's for tomorow and thursday the ice might be just a skim by friday. No cold weather in the near future either. Finals next week for you? Maybe next week might bring some cold temps. Are the fish biting well up there around Duluth?

Ross, I wouldn't walk out on any ice right now either but one web site I looked at had it getting cold near the end of next week. Lows in the single digits at night and in the teens during the day. If that's true the lakes should be good to go by the end of next weekend. Just in time for me as I have finals next week and then have a month off. Let me know if you have time during the day or anytime if you want to get out around here. I'm in for sure. Actually a buddy and me might head up to Red for a day or 2 after I am done with finals.

Man I want to hit Red badly, but I guess I will just have to wait until I have the chance. The fishing is not that bad up here right now. The last couple days we have been out on a lake north of here fishing walleyes and getting a few here and there. I don't know these lakes well enough yet. We have about 7 inches of ice up here on some of the lakes so I guess it just depends on where you live whether or not you can get out. Hopefully I will be able to fish some of the lakes back home over break and boy am I ready for it. After next weeks finals I am going to just want to crash. Well good luck to any of you guys that might get out.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey Guys,

How has the fishing been if you have been able to get out? If not how are the lakes looking? I am worried mainly about powers lake and the quality of ice on it right now. If there are any other lakes in the area that you are fishing already let us know.

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend
    • smurfy
thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆
