Ice on Gull Lake

Recommended Posts

Well, when I came in from bow hunting this morning I noticed that, for the first time this season, we have a thin layer of ice nearly all across Gull Lake here!! I only see a couple of spots open which are filled with ducks today. Yes!!

THis is getting my blood pumping. Keep us posted on the ice conditions. We may have to chase some early ice crappies on Gull.

I will keep you posted, Buddy. You know last year my oldest boy and I pulled the docks out on October 29th and my youngest boy and I were ice fishing over the bull rushes on November 9th!

We'll have to check on Blackduck after the cold temps this weekend. Still rolling waves out there yesterday.

Well, this morning the wind and waves blew away most of our ice but the forecast looks as though it's in our favor for some real ice making soon. I can't wait to take a shot at those early ice walleyes. Last year they were big and hungry.

Yep, shouldn't be too much longer now. At Upper Red today there wasn't any sign of ice, just those cold rollers moving in. BUT, tonight is down in the teens and pretty calm, and except for Monday our highs aren't suppose to get above the mid 30's (Monday is 40) and the lows are back to normal in the teen range. Can't wait to get some jumbo perch on the Duck (and of course some eyes) and the crappie fever is setting in for URL!

No ice on Blackduck or Upper Red as of today. The temps are plenty cold but it was also very windy last night and some pretty good gusts today. Shouldn't be much longer though...did you see those single digit temps in the forecast!

This morning a little more than half of our part of Gull is frozen. From my view here to the bigger part of the lake looks about the same. I haven't gotten down to the launch to check thickness but from the house here it looks pretty good! You all have a great Thanksgiving and stay safe.

The ice is singing and moaning out here on Gull Lake. the old icemaker is just a chugging away. I ventured out about 30 yards off my access here last night and measured about 2.5 inches of ice. For the last couple of days I've noticed someone in a portable set up about the same distance off shore across the lake from us, out in front of the Gull Lake campground, just off the edge of the bullrushes. I think I'll wait a few more days, myself. We had a group of muzzle loaders here since Friday and they harvested just 3, one nice buck, but said that without more snow it's really tough right now. Myself, well, I'm back out with the bow checking the swamps. They should be frozen enough to walk across some.

Everybody, please play safe on this early ice!!

We have been out the last couple of nights and have found that there is between 5 and 6 inches of ice. Not sure if that is all over but where we punched our holes that is what we had.

We were just out on the ice out front here a couple of hours ago and it measured out at 9". From the folks I talked to today, the bite is a bit off, yet, they had some big pike on the ice! They tell me they are catching small walleyes pretty regularly but only one eater out of five ratios. I've got some fishin' buddies up for the weekend and will be out there with them the next couple of days. We're going to scout out some different areas that aren't being fished just yet and will post the info as we get it. C'mon cold snap!!
