Fished the Dam yesterday. Nice and mild. After moving 6 times, finally found the right combination. Current break to side of the main channel, 14 feet, 3-way with gold or pink hook, some on gold jig. Caught probably 25+ fish, half were 15-18", a couple 21's. Bites were pretty light. Kept the rigs moving along the bottom slowly. Hope we get another day to hit the water.

Fm Staffer Renneberg and myself hit Pool 4 for the majority of the day Thursday.

Lots of action, but light bites( if ya wanna call them bites).

The fish definitely won the battle this day. However, between the two of us, we pulled in around 50 fish, including a nice channel cat Steve caught!

I was quite frustrated with the extreme subtle sipping of the hook the fish demonstrated yesterday.

You really had to be on top of your rod and line.

The top producers was a rig with a plain orange hook, tipped with a minnnow. I had one fish on plastics. WIth the forecast looking more favorable nexrt week I predict things to really take off. We caught fish in every spot we tried from Bay point on up to the dam.

Surface temps were around 43 degrees.

One thing to note, these fish we caught were on the bottom tight! Majority of them caught were not even marked on my graph. I imagine holding hard to the small depressions in the sand?

THanks Steve for coming along.

Keep the rods bendin'!!

Hey guys,

How has the bite been so far this week and what are turning the heads of those wary walleyes and saugers. I plan to venture down to pool four on fri and would like to have a basis to start on and I would like to know if they are actually biting. Otherwise I might stay a little closer to home. Whatever info you have would be great. Thanks and be safe on the water.

I am hoping to get down there on Friday as well.

When you showing up?

They are biting and I expect a real good bite, especially if we get that snow they are hinting at.

Knowing the way that I fish I will try to be down there before the break of light. I am predicting that the river is going to be a zoo on friday since it is the thanksgiving weekend. How do you plan to hit it? Up at the dam or ust down from the "y"? As for the bite what are they hitting the best? Are they going for live bait on rigs and jigs, or hair and plastics, or are they hitting the blades? If you see me down there give me a holler. I will be in a tan and black smokercraft with a gray suzuki 70 on the back of it. I haven't been down there yet this year, but the day after Thanksgiving last year we smoked 'em so I am again looking forward to a good bite. I hope everyone has a nuce Thanksgiving and that at least some of you might get out on the water if you can.

I was down there last sunday and the bite was slow and short. We had alot of minnows come in and not have much of the back end left to them. I had several fish lost at the boat when they would simply let go of the minnow. I am hoping to make it back out there on Saturday if it is not going to be too bad of weather. Post how you do.

Rich,

DId you try using a stinger hook when you saw that those fish were short biting? I have found that when the fish bite short this will really increase the amount that you catch. Just a thought. Good luck if you get out this weekend.

wall-i-king,

Personally I try to avoid the immediate dam bite if I can find fish active elsewhere. So I am all over the place, hopping around looking for active feeding pods of fish!

LAst time I was out I found the short biters as well, but I found them in most spots I tried. A good sign in my eyes!

Has anyone been out lately in Pool 4? I am looking at going out tomorrow with the kids and I am wondering if it will be worth the trip. Thanks for the help.

My dad and I were down there yesterday and ended up getting 30 of them on plastcis up by the dam. I had a friend who was out there and got 45 of them on a live bait rig and a minnow. I also heard that there were nice walleyes hitting in the shallows but I didn't try at all to fish them. It looked like everyone was getting fish so I would say that it is well worth going down there and giving it a shot. Another note with the plastics is that we found that the ring worm was the best presentation in any form of chartruese. Also I saw that bucktail jigs were working well too for some of the guys out there. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like we should have a good time. I am hopful that the kids will have fun and catch a few. My boys are really looking forward to it. We were going to go today but with the snow we decided to wait until sunday. I hope the fish will still be biting tomorrow. What depths were you finding fish in? Also were you just drifting along with the current near the dam? Thanks for the help.

Rich, when you approach the dam from in the Wisconsin channel, you will likely find that most drifting will be taking place on the Mn side of the chute and many will be anchored on the Ws side. The fish will probably be anywhere from 10 to 26-28 feet.

Hey if you see a green Lund Rebel with 30 hp Yami with 2 kids and 2 adults in it that will be us. We will probably be on the Mn side drifting. Have always had some luck there.

Rich,

Good running into you on the water today. Glad you had a good bite. Did you guys find any big Eyes today? We had a good time also. Mostly Saug's in 20-30. My son hooked onto a 4 foot Shovelnose. They are not supposed to eat the ringworms! It was fun for him to catch. Lot's of people catching fish today. It sounds like a good weather week. I will be out again on Saturday looking for some bigger fish in the shallows.

See you on the Water!

Hi Troller,

Yes it was nice to meet you too. We did ok when we were there. My son got cold since he forgot his boots so we sere not able to stay as long as would have liked to. We did good. We ended up bringing home 12 for the 4 of us, which I didn't think was too bad since we only fished 2 hours. We seem to find them in the 20 foot range of water. Again alot of short biters but this time we had stinger hooks on so that helped alot. We did get some nice ones also. We probably caught 30-40 fish in the 2 hours. I work next weekend so The next time available for me to get down there will be the following monday. Kind of iffy now with the weather so I wii just have to wait and see. Hope you do well if you go back down next weekend.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
