Recommended Posts

Where would I go around Mankato/St. Peter this winter to catch eyes and/or crappies?

Thanks, Dano.

I cant wait for first ice, Clear lake by gibbon has been on fire this fall for walleyes, Should be excellent for icing some nice fish this winter.

Yes last winter one saturday afternoon it was about 35 degrees and me and three other guys got over 45 walleyes in 3 hours. We would get tem off our tip up and start to go back to our holes and it would be up again. We litterally couldn't keep them off our line.

Does anyone ever fish the river down by goldmine? i heard it can put some fish out, and we went there last year a few times.

It doesn't freeze completely , in certain stretches it stays open due to current and or how many springs are in the area. I tend to fish the St.Peter highway 99 bridge and a couple of other places around Belle Plaine , BUT only with a partner. You just can't trust the river ice . I have punched through 18 inches of ice in one spot, move 5 feet and there is only 4. Being extra carefull is the name of the game when it comes to icefishing the river , or any body of water . But it can be very rewarding for the walleyes when they are on the bite, especially early ice.

I agree with papa grump the river can be tricky to fish with the ice thickness changing from one spot to the next, If the river doesnt drop much before freeze up ,the current is pretty strong right now there might be a few more open spots this year confused.gif

Goldmine is about 5 miles NW of Redwood Falls. Ive never tried fishing there. My spot is about a mile or so down river from there.
