Where are all the fishing folks?

Recommended Posts

This weekend we took home a decent mess of perch. Had hopes to take home a few eyes too, but they decided not to cooperate. I also had fun fighting in a 8.5lb pike. It's always fun to land one of the meanest fish in the water.

Overall I'd say it was a good time, but I guess I'm more of the "sit and relax" type of fisherman than the "gotta have constant action" type. And sitting shoulder to shoulder with competing fishermen tends to take a little of the fun out of it too.

Well, I just thought I'd post a note here since it seems the board has all but died lately.

Happy fishing!

Out of curiosity, and if it's your secret honey hole please don't tell me, but where did you catch a gob of perch??? I've been getting skunked duck hunting and tossing around the idea of getting back on the lake.

Ahhhh, well I don't believe it's my secret to tell. Email Wallywalleye ([email protected]). It's his spot, he can tell ya if wants.

Glad to see there's one other person still perusing the SW Minnesota forum. If there's anybody else that likes to mosey around here but hasn't posted in a while, drop a line here so to say 'hi'.

It'll be good to know people still pay attention to this forum, whether they post here or not. laugh.giftongue.gif

Hi Wade,

I've got an idea where all the fisherman are. I bet they have been out deer hunting. We were out this past weekend and contributed to global warming with all the holes in the ozone. We managed to sling enough lead to pollute most of MN. Three deer accidently ran in front of the pattern we blasted out into the horizon. I was cleaning out the old perchmobile Sunday when it dawned on me that the seasons are getting close to changing again. I'm pretty sharp and not too much gets by me. My wife tells me that all the time. Ice fishing is just around the corner. A few small ponds have ice on them already. I found a new spot to fish this winter. I think it must be real good fishing. It's real close. I happen to be driving by the other day and saw all this ice and some guy had a machine out there shining that ice up real nice. I just had to go inside and see what was going on. Someone built this building over the whole darn pond. I bet they did that to keep rough fisherman out. You know those kind that party on the ice all the time. I can only imagine all the fish in that pond. For some reason I just can't figure out yet, there's a bunch of wood bleachers on one side of the pond. I don't know if they let people watch you fish or what. I can't wait to get the old auger out and try it out to see if it runs yet. I think they called it lake Arena.

Lake Arena, eh? I think I tried to get on the ice there once, but some people who said they work there (musta been DNR in disguise) wouldn't let me take my auger in. Handed me a pair of skates instead. I figured there ain't any fish worth catching if you have to chip thru the ice with a pair of skates to get at em, so I left. Went back a few times, but either the doors were locked or else there were so many cars parked there I figure people must be fishing shoulder to shoulder and that ain't my style. smirk.gif Since there's 9,999 other lakes in the state, and several in the neighboring states to the west and to the south that I like to frequent, I don't bother stopping by Arena anymore. Never heard of anybody catching anything there anyways.

No fishing in the forecast for this weekend either. I'm heading south to Omaha instead. Sumthing about my new niece's baptism, and since I'm told we're supposed to be her God parents, I figure I better be there.

Heck, by the next weekend maybe I can get on some hard water someplace! But odds are that's just wishful thinking, especially considering the 50lbs I'll put on after four or five Thanksgiving dinners in the two days before. crazy.gif

I'm looking forward to the hind end of that pig you're having at your house. Last year I went ice fishing after Thanksgiving. It may be different this year. I may have to find a big chunk of wood to sit on to distribute my petite figure over the hard water. I'm putting an order in soon for waxies. Something to think about. You can let me know at the pig feed. I'm really getting the itch..... to fish. Not any other kind of itch.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
