belle plain Area

ATM

Recommended Posts

On sunday I hunted several public hunting areas around the belle plain- Jordan area. Found some good looking spots but it looked like the entire south metro had walked through them. I hunted from 12 -3 and could only muster up one rooster. Adam

ATM,

I am new to the area and have been out a couple of times and have hardly seen a bird. I don't really even know where to go. It's frustrating.

Get yourself a PRIM map of the area. Check the DNR’s site for the map that would cover your area. They cost about $5.00, well worth it.

ATM,

If I’m not mistaken, I sat and chatted with you a bit about ice fishing at the FM get together at Glederado. Looks like it could be Christmas before we see any fishable ice.

I spent a day doing a little WMA hopping in that area late season last year and it was tough. Looked like they were hit pretty hard. I saw a few birds but they all flushed to far out.

I live in Belle Plaine, and I dont hunt around here much. If I do, its just exercise. Go 2 hrs west for birds, worth the drive.

I plan to hit as many of the ice events this year like cool cats on ice up at horseshoe so i can meet more people from this site. If you want to hook up and do some fishing or hunting just leave a post or shoot me an e-mail [email protected]. Im heading to the benson area on thursday.

I hunted the WMAs out past the golf course last Friday AM after the heavy freeze. Dog worked well, found 11 birds only 1 rooster out of the bunch though. Its tough out there as these areas get hit hard, I usually go out there once or twice a week only because its close and I have a young dog. Otherwise I hunt out by Storden and Jeffers if I really want birds.

Seems like a lot of people in Belle Plaine on here, maybe we should get a gathering together, even if it is just for a few beers in someones garage, maybe get the dogs together for a bit.

I will be in the Arlington/Green Isle area on Thanksgiving day. I was thinking about doing a little pheasant hunting in the AM before lunch. Where would be a good place to go?

Thanks,

Bump...

When people talk about the WMA's south of Belle Plaine are they talking about PF #1, #3, Raven, Michael, and Marsh WMA's? Also, are there any WMA's closer to Arlington/Green Isle?

Thanks,

hey I just hunted all of the above on sat, it was 2 of us with one dog, saw 1 bird(Hen) all day, I was just looking to get out, I am going further west later this week.

They all looked like great areas, first time I had hunted any of them. Not sure how much pressure they get, but seem too large of an area for the 2 of us to cover

If you go out, post your results. Good Luck!

I live in Belle Plaine also and I hunt these WMA's every year with no success whatsoever. But I dont have a dog to hunt with so that is a big part of my problem. I only saw 2 roosters all last year. If anyone wants to get together some time and put together a massive drive on these areas it would at least be worth it for the excercise and the fun.

Hunting birds around Arlington area this year has been terrible this year. This spring I saw alot of adult birds along the road as I travel 150 miles of gravel a day. This fall I have seen next to no birds and talking with the farmers after combining corn they have told me they saw next to nothing. This is the worst I personally have seen it in the last 20 years. mad.gif

Are there any deer hunters that hunt the WMA's south of Belle Plaine?? It looks like they are inside of the 3B boundary. I have never been to this area so was wondering if I need to buy a blaze vest for my Golden Retreiver???

Thanks,

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
