Looks like its going to be a good November. The deer meat is in the freezer. The head is being mounted. And the walleyes are biting (on the Mississippi River) feeding up for winter.

I guided a gentleman from Alabama friday on pool 4. We had a great bite. Even boated a 22in sauger, In-fisherman master angler award for sauger, on jig/minnow.

He went fishing while his wife and daughters

shopped at MOA. (Mall of America). Nice weekend get away.

I think the usual lakes will be a very productive; Norway, Green, Games, Diamond, etc. Some of the lakes that will be better for walleyes this year than last, will probably be Big Kandiyohi and Foot in my opinion. I guess it all comes down to individual skill, timing, and a little luck doesn't hurt. Hope everyone has a great hard water season!

Leech21,

How soon you think we'll have ice on the lake? (The way weather has been going I don't know if we'll be Icefishing by Thankxgiving day like last year.)

When you guys think we'll have 3to 4" ice to begin with? I'm starting to get Ice fever already, .....hee...he

I'd say for sure by the first part of December. I as well am getting the fever! Although tonight I did pretty well with the pike out on Willmar.

It might me awhile before we have ice the way its going. Definitely December now. Did well this past weekend on some of the early ice spots in the boat. Its supposed to be 60 degrees later this week! Just have to keep jerking the eyes' in the boat instead of the fishhouse. Water temp was around 40 degrees. The eyes' were stacked on hard bottom areas.

I would say by the end of the second week in December we will be ice fishing. With the water temps on most lakes at 44º or so, it will be a while yet.

The augers are ready and chomping at the bits. Lets Go!

Has any lakes making Ice yet.....Haa.....haa

Just kidding I'm just getting the Ice fishing fever, got my bucket and Ice house ready for the first time and still no ice. (Normally I'm still getting stuff situated and the ice is already on the lakes...)

cool.gifWith no snow on the ground believe it or not I have caught up on all my "Honey to do list" this year for the first time, even the leaves are all racked up.....:)grin.gif

What lake will have Ice on first?

Went out a few times last week and got out again on Sunday. I finally gave in and used a swedish pimple and doubled my catch from previous days. The size was smaller on average but who cares. First ice is going to be nuts! Jigging from the boat this time of year is a blast. Can't wait to get that second line out. Later

Fished kandi last night with little results. I have'nt had much luck out there this summer or spring except late in sept. I caught a #17 cat one night and managed to catch a 30" #11 walleye the next but that was the only eye. Water temp was 36 last night i guess i'll be on kandi by the 2nd of Dec!

As of yesterday,

Green Lake water Temp is at 40ºF yet.

Nest Lake water Temp is at 38ºF with some of the bays being froze over with ice ranging up to 1" thick.

Its getting closer and maybe I will have to put the boat down finally. smirk.gif

Jamie,

Seems like I had the same results minus the 30" eye. Normally I get a few nice perch and eyes from kandi but this year it has been slow, infact the guys off the docks seems to have better luck this year fishing with suckers and chubbs, then myself freezing my tail off in the boat.

Any how I might have to make it up by Ice fishing....hee..he

I noticed footlake was getting some Ice finally, don't knoe how thick though...........maybe 1" or so.

Nice pic of the fish, Is Kramer going to mount this one too?, Stop by and see the 8# walleye he did for my kid.It turned oout real good.

Localguide, sounds like its time out get the boat out and start hitting it hard. We fish spring lake near Prior Lake, MN. Just when the lake gets an 1inch of ice along shore. The big walleye really put on the feed bag. We catch several eyes 22 to 31 inches. I know norway and some of the other lakes can do really well just before ice up.

Think ice fishing only your in the boat, the hot spots of first ice are going now.

J, yes Mr. Kraemer will definetly be doing the mount! At the price he charges and the excellent quality work he does I would'nt go any where else! Anyone looking for a great taxidermist at a resonable rate, and when I say resonable rate I mean it, email me at [email protected]. As for deer hunting, I did'nt squeeze{not saying I did'nt have a chance-- I have to beat the 145 class 12 point my wife shot last year} she shot a nice 10 point this year so I am still trying to beat her wall hanger bowhunting but the muzzelloader season kinda messes up late season bow hunting . Am planning on getting on the ice fri the 3rd a day after my prediction!!! crazy.gif

Much appreciated. It may not have been the best start but hopefully the next week will start to firm things up.   I like your view.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing has begun for some areas of the lake, while others are grooming trails and will be close behind.  The ice is progressing nicely.  There were concerns a big blow this past week might mess things up but thankfully, the ice stayed intact and is continuing to thicken.    Please remember, ice conditions can vary significantly from one area of the lake to the next.  That is why it is difficult to provide an answer to the question, "How thick is the ice?"  The thickness and condition of the ice is best told by those working each ice road every day.  With that being said, there is certainly some good news regarding ice progression.       So far, some resorts have begun by allowing snowmobiles and ATVs with collapsible fish houses to access their ice roads.     In addition, some resorts are pulling day houses out this week and they are available to rent.  It is best to check with your favorite resort for additional info.  Resorts will provide transportation to and from the front door of their heated fish houses.  Early ice provides some excellent ice fishing opportunities.   The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting below zero and single digits many days.  Good news for eager ice anglers and resorts who provide ice fishing services.   Initial actual fishing reports have been very good.  Good numbers of walleyes and saugers being caught with some nice jumbo perch, eelpout and pike as well. When you decide to come up, please stay on the resort / outfitters marked trails.  They are marked for a reason and veering off of the trail could put you on ice conditions not suitable.   The satellite imagery shows Big Traverse Bay, which is the main body of the lake, locked up.   On the Rainy River...  The river is gaining ice.  Some local resorts and guides have been out checking ice conditions and fishing with some decent reports of walleyes and some sturgeon.  River ice doesn't form as quickly as there is current.  Work through a resort for safety. In addition to angling, some spearing and angling for pike is taking place in back bays off of the river.     Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice.  Resorts and outfitters are continuing to check ice conditions and mark trails.  Ice fishing will be coming soon to this part of the lake as ice conditions are also progressing nicely up at the Angle.     Traditionally, most Angle resorts will get houses out and begin fishing December 26th.   Some resorts may take advantage of good ice conditions and get out earlier in the month.  Watch messaging from your favorite NW Angle resort / outfitter for specifics. Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook / Instagram pages or other resort social media pages will keep you updated often with current ice and fishing reports.   If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st, with walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and pike season never closes.

Skunked, we had about 4-5" on the ground, some melted with the warm weather over the weekend. But, overnight and it's still snowing, we're adding to the totals. I'd say we've got another 4+ so far. The railing was clear before it started snowing. Some wet spots out in front of me, I haven't checked the ice thickness yet. Hopefully, we're not in for another bad year with slush on the lake!
    • SkunkedAgain
Appreciate the report. Too bad the fishing didn't reward you but 6 walleye isn't the worst you could do!   It doesn't look like we got as much snow as predicted, so hopefully the cold can really do its magic on strengthening the ice this week.
