Howdy folks.

Sorry I've been so scarce this season, it's been kinda hard. Thanks for the kind words in previous posts.

My shoulder is better than in june, I was hurting. Couple cortizone shots later theres barely any pain anymore but it still pops and grinds all the time, annoying as all getout.

It pretty much destroyed my fishing/guide season but in a way that was OK. I had been fishing hard for a long time, I almost knew nothing else. I didnt even realize I needed a break until I had to take one. I put my big boat away in july, I might take it out next spring. I still have my little boat out just to beat around in if I feel like it. I'm actually looking forward to getting on some ice and sitting in the fish house with my wife and daughter, they like to fish too, I just never had the time to take them much in the summer the past few years. Thats going to change. I'm not going to guide next season. I want to spend some time rediscovering some old lakes and pursuing new ones, stuff I just havent taken the time to do. That decision was EXTREMELY tough for me to make, I love the guiding biz, love the people I get to meet and the fish are just a bonus. I've had a great run! Thanks all! I hope my regulars will still call when you come up, you still have a seat in the old smokercraft lolol. Who knows maybe in a year or two I might start back up again. Part of whats hard is where to split up my time. I have a difficult time calling myself a "prostaffer" if I'm not fishing on a professional level, which I am not right now it feels anyways. I havent been fishing much this season and I havent had much to say, two those things go against you in this industry :-)

I will be doing my monday radio show North Country Outdoors on 99.3 this winter with Curt Quesnell, will also be staying on with Jeff at Scenic Tackle, old habits die hard! lol I'm suprised to still see my name up in the moderators list, I havent been much good lately. I'm glad its still there. I was starting to miss it! It actually feels more like walking into a strange place with all the changes. Well enough of my rambling and thanks again everybody for understanding Paul..

Hello Paul,

Good to hear that you are feeling better. Look forward to seeing you out on the ice this winter. Stop by the house and say hi when you make it out on Lee (hopefully the walleyes will be a little more cooperative this year).

Take care of yourself and enjoy the time with your family.

God Bless you and your decision Paul.

welcome back, nice to see ya here again. Glad your shoulder feels abit better. Cant they operate on it to fix it up? Is it the rotator cuff or cup. Man I hope my left shoulder dont get that bad, it pops and grinds abit too.

Nice to hear you'll get more quality fishing time with the family. I will be getting my 4 year old out ice fishing for his first time this year, have a good spot for nice sized sunnies, he should get a kick out of it.

Well its a real bummer that it had to slow your guiding down, I was going to come after ya next spring to learn about the big pine walleyes, heh, heh.

take care now.

Hey Ted how did ya fare in the classic this year? I know the lake was hot a little prior to tourney time. Biggest for us out there this fall was 7 lbs.. I'll be very gently easing into the snowmobile thing as soon as there is enough snow. Not sure if I could handle a hard day yet, time will tell. I realllllly hope I'm good to go, been pretty careful not to do anything to aggrivate it.

I wonder what its going to be like to have three weeks vacation and not have to fish if I dont want to? I really havent been anyplace but locally since my honeymoon in april of 93. Should sneak back to yellowstone next summer.hmmmmmm...

If I remember right the drop the ball award isnt such a bad one to get! Your in good company there, seen some big local names get it during the pelican tourney, better luck next year I guess. lolol...

Paul,

Sounds like it could be one of the unwelcome life experiences that actually lead to a good thing. Good luck with new ventures. Glad you're sticking around to help keep us informed. Your years of wisdom and experience are invaluable around here.

Paul, Good to see that you are still kicken! I emailed you and you didn't respond, so I was getting a complex. Glad to see that you are doing well. Thanks for all the good times and I will see you next June (11th - 18th) at Hills

Hey IB, looking forward to next summer already. You picked a decent time to come up this next go round, that august/september stuff can be a little rough. Lida was rough on alot of anglers this past summer. Dad is doing good, hasnt quite killed enough deer this season to get bored, blackpowder season is coming up, we'll see what shape hes in in mid february, that retirement stuff is known to be tough on a guy :-)

Starting to feel like winter around here, lows in the teens and some of the bigger sloughs have been froze over the past two mornings..Later dude!! Paul

Just gotta use some common sense and have some ice safety gear.  If I hadn’t duffed the shot on the buck on the last day of rifle season, I’d probably be on the ice this weekend also.  Instead, I’ll still be chasing some vennie.

just seen a report on fartbook the pines resort on winnie had 8-9 inches in the bay.  they did warn any further out the ice has not been checked, like over by the river!!!!!

Looks like Vermilion froze overnight on Monday, which would make it officially frozen Tuesday, December 3.  I am going out to McKinley Park Friday morning to check out the ice conditions and possibly fish.

Looking at the webcams, I don't see any open water. Is Big Bay completely frozen over yet?   The forecast looks like a few inches of snow Sunday/Monday followed by temps below zero.

I'd say lakes under 500 acers less than 40 ft deep. They're targeting panfish. We're making ice everyday. Windy today, terrible roads, lots of people decided that they needed to drive fast and that unfortunately led to some vehicles doing some incidental off roading

Falls gone Gim, time to move to ice fishin!!👍

Fall was like a month long.  Maybe even less.  I'm quite a bit south of you but I can recall fishing in short sleeves in late October.  Less than a month later, prior to Thanksgiving, winter arrived.   September and most of October were way more like summer than fall.  Kind of too bad, I like fall.

is that 5-6 inches on smaller lakes or ........... bigger water bodies. i'm guessing knowing the lakes i fish or would like to should maybe have more. i will be seeing a former coworker who livws of hwy 6 north of deer river saturday, hoping he's got a good report.   he's a neighbor and good friend to CO Fairbanks so should get some good intel. i know Mike well too!

It's definitely winter, we have about 4-6 inches of fluffy snow on the ground which has predominantly blown off the ice. I have several friends out on the ice as of late 5-6 inches of ice. I work the next two days, will get the gear together Saturday and go Sunday. I'd be completely fine if we have an early spring like earlier this year.
