Just three more days and deer rifle opens. Who out there goes deer hunting? What's your largest/trophy deer? We're not deer hunters ourselves, but have got to try some pretty good deer meat recipes that folks have made, just got some canned deer meat with the garlic, but still a little partial to the sausage.

Woodman, I know you're heading out. Talked to your dad and we got a chuckle out of your grouse story smile.gif Does Tiff deer hunt too? Hope the deer hunting goes well for you!

Good luck to the hunters out there!

Drake- Yes, Tiffany deer hunts also. The buck fever is really flowing in our house right now. We have been packing all week, and buying food. I have been to fleet, gander and Walmart looking for some good buys on stuff I probably don't need. smile.gif

I will be hunting out of the Palmer residence on the southeast side of town. Dad cant make it this year so Im hunting with a freind, it will only be his second time hunting and I think he'll be treated to a good spot. Ive got three decent bucks the last four years and have seen many a does that I always pass on. I might take a doe this year just for the heck of it. This WILL be the year that I get my trophy. Did my uncle Scott get reelected the City council? Hope so, hes a good guy.

Good luck to all.

Blackduck, IMHO, is the best dear hunting in the state.

The rest of the "Bushwacker" crew is already up there right now, and I am leaving in 37 minutes!!! I can't wait. We have done pretty well the last four years. I shot a very nice 10 pointer that is now on my wall, a heavy 8 pointer, and my uncle shot a nice 13 pointer that is on his wall. Before that, we never really shot anything bigger that a small ten.

We had 7 guys south of B-Duck and got 2 (doe & spike). Not a lot of shooting. No snow and warm weather was nice for hunting, but snow helps out spotting deer and keeping them on the move.

What's with the wolves in the area this year? One guy in our party had a fawn and a nice doe come flying full speed past his stand, he put the doe in his scope and noticed a black object chasing them. He looked at it and it was a huge timberwolf. By the time he looked back at the doe he took a shot and missed and the wolf veered off in the opposite direction as the deer. The party next to us had two big brush wolves go under his stand on Saturday.

We ended up going 4 for 7 with one really big bodied 6 that had the smallest rack I have seen. Either a real old deer on the rack decline, or one that just didn't have it genetically. The field dressed wieght was close to 200 lbs.

We've been hearing that some have seen some of the wolves out in the area that they are hunting, but they are saying not as many as last year...just depends on the area.

Hunting has been good for some, while others have said they aren't seeing many. Had one guy who got a 10 pointer on opening day that weighed in at 210, he was pretty happy with that one, followed by a doe the next day. Another solo hunter had a buck and a doe; father/son team with spike buck and a doe; group of six with one doe so far; group of eight had a combination of bucks & doe for 11 and a group of three left with a doe.

Had thought we were going to get some snow but that's out of the forecast again, but the weather is still going to hold in the 30's & 40's the remainder of the week and through the weekend...not the best for tracking the deer but at least not as miserably cold for the hunters like last year!

Woodman~You and Tiff going back out in the woods again? Your dad hunting?

Good luck to all the hunters...let us know how you do!

Drake- We are heading up to Northome on Thursday because of Veterens day and no work. We will go up again on the weekend and hopefully shoot a couple or all 7 of them. Dad is hunting and has only missed a running 6 pointer that tried to run down Tiff on Sunday. I chased it out of the woods and was running towards Tiff when my dad yelled at her and she looked up and the Buck was about 10 yards away running right at her. It looked up and veered off and ran across a field. Dad took a poke at it but missed.

Well it was not as wet as I was expecting but was still pretty wet.. A few stands we could not get to.

In our party we had 15 hunters and harvested 13 by Sunday. Nothing on Sat. but all on Sunday..

I have hunted 25 years now and have never even seen a buck bigger than a small spike or small basket rack.. Well this year I got my big deer.. 200# 9 pointer.. I was shaking sooooooooooo bad.. LOL...

Over all we got 8pt 195#, 9pt 200#, 8pt 200#, and a two forks, the rest are does and fawns.

Over all it was a good first weekend.. Did not see any wolves this year by us. Lots of bear sign though.

Tiffany was using a Primo big can call this morning and called in a 210# 8 point buck. She was sitting in my stand and he come out of a swamp looking for that doe. I believe in the can now. She was so impressed and the deer came within 30 yards of her and did not even see her. cool.gif

That is all the deer we saw today. Back up north on Sat.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
