Planning my yearly visit to the lake in June. If you're looking for the elusive Sheepshead you better get there before me! Just hope those pesky bait stealing Wallys are getting fished out!!!

One thing I've been trying figure out is the secret to the big sheepshead in the Duck. My buddies and I guess that they hatch at about four pounds since (believe it or not) that is smallest one I've ever seen caught there.

Good luck!!

Hmmmm....Thought I was the sheepshead master angler. You're right sakman, 4 lbs is small for that lake. Another thing I've noticed is that they are a fierce fighter in the water but after you get off the hook you can lay em in the boat and they barely move. I like to toss em back after an hour or so and watch him swim away. Hearty fish indeed!

Well maybe I'm exaggerating a tad bit.

Mypoleisbroken~Threw back my sheephead last night and told it to hang on until you get here grin.gif Over the weekend there were quite a few boats out on the Duck, with most congregated in the same general area~some catching limits and really slow for others. Did see a couple of Jumbo sunnies come through the cleaning room last night that came out of Blackduck, just like the crappies they're not abundant in the lake but when you get into them you're really pleased with the size.

I will be in Blackduck sometime 7-5, I'll be there for a week! What can I expect to catch on Blackduck, and what are the best ways to catch them? Thanks for any info!

Hey Mypoleisbroken~some sheephead on Blackduck are calling your name. Tonight caught four and some guests who were out fishing caught some with the biggest in the 10 to 12 pound range. Everyone threw them back so Come and get em'

Barry G., hard to say what's going to be happening on Blackduck then, the bite hasn't kicked in hot and heavy yet, maybe it's waiting for you! Looked at some notes from last year and around the Fourth it was catching a few here and there, then the week after that it the bite kicked in really strong with many folks coming back with limits, Last year at that time it was earlier (5 to 7pm) and in the 10' - 20' depths.

Good luck to you!

Blackduck Lake 7/5 - 7/11
Not much going on until 7/10, finally got into a few fish, my son caught a 33" northern and the first walleye of the week. 7/11 we got 5 decent walleyes and about 8 perch. Total brought home...1 northern, 6 walleye, and 20 perch. We had a GREAT time! I truly think that my son and I caught more fish than everyone else at the resort we were staying at combined... That's not saying a lot...but we all had a good time. It was nice to meet The Drakes! I hope I get to stop in again sometime! We left Blackduck at 4:30 am and reached home at 6:30 pm alot better time than I thought we would make. Take Care !

Barry~It was nice to meet you too! That's a pretty decent size northern coming out of the Duck! We drove by Blackduck on Friday night but didn't see anyone out there?? So you did do a straight through drive home..long day! But then you got a day to kick back before going back to reality!

Yes, I drove straight through, my wife didn't even offer to drive any. I came home down through Iowa on the Avenue of the Saints...that really cut out some time for me. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, luckily I got plenty of sleep Friday night...that helped alot! Take Care!

Fished Blackduck again this year for our 6th anniv., not as good as last year. I caught one nice walleye and the wife caught a perch. It was a great day to be on the lake. We fished Sat. the 12th from 9-12:30pm.

Hey Woodman! Sorry to hear the fishing wasn't the same as last year, wasn't it your anniversary that we got that pic of you and Tiff with those walleyes? You'll have to pop in next time you hit the Duck and say hey~happy anniv. to you and Tiff! Hey, has your dad been out lately?

Dad has only been out a few times pretty slow. A lot of little ones and lots of perch. His boat is at the cabin right now catching the water that falls from the sky. I called me tonight to go and empty it out.

When are you going to build that deck. I will offer my hammer and fingers to help.

Hey Woodman! Thanks for the offer on the deck building~I should've logged on earlier! This past weekend was "deck" weekend, had a brother from Indiana call late last week and say he was on his way to help build the deck this weekend and the local brother came over ~can't turn down help~ so we got it whipped out. Now it's trying to decide whether to start on the renovation of the new motel rooms or painting the outside of the motel..the fun just never ends! (Think we need to get the boat on the water so we can get more water on the outside than the inside like your dads!) Thanks for the offer smile.gif

Thats great that you got that deck done drake. I was out to lake of the woods on friday and did very well. Fished blackduck on saturday evening and did okay. Got there around 7 and the bite was really good and by 8pm they were done biting. We missed a lot of fish and landed 6 walleyes. We parked on the school and an hour later they were gone. No perch and no SHEEPHEAD.
Good luck
Kupcho

I haven’t been as far north as the chair yet so I have no idea what condition leech has left in in!  I think he should take it home and restore it.   Big Rice has was a b*ch to paddle.  I didn’t miss it this weekend and won’t miss it any other weekend I don’t make it there.

IKR!   I’m hopefully gonna be in Ely in a couple weeks but I’ll be chasing ducks more than grouse.  Not the best place to go for ducks but I love it up there in October.

As long as the birds don’t fly I am good. I can catch fish through the ice fairly well.

My cousin and I just returned from beautiful Lake Vermilion after 4.5 days of the most spectacular walleye fishing you could ever hope for. Usually our mutual friend joins us but his father passed away and he had to opt out. We arrived late Saturday afternoon and packed things up after our morning outing Wednesday. We stopped at Cabelas on the way up and found them to be sold out of pike suckers. While they had them, they were charging 99 cents each! We then stopped at Harris bait shop and found a help yourself situation that was also out of pike suckers. They sold them while available for 6 for $6! We eventually found them locally for the same price as last year. During our stay, we used pike suckers, rainbow mix, and crawlers. The walleyes hit them all but, I believe, the rainbow mix caught the most, the crawlers were almost as productive, and the pike suckers produced the biggest fish.  We caught them in depths ranging from 13' to 27'. They were in the rocks and in the mud depending on the time of day. We caught walleyes all day every day with 5 o'clock PM to ~7 o'clock PM being optimum for quantity. The weather was absolutely HORRIBLE with high winds and non-stop rain early in the trip. Boat control was very difficult and I struggled to keep our speed around that .4mph to .6mph. Hits were fast and furious but the hit to catch ratio was at best 5 or more hits to one catch . We stuck with the 1oz bottom bouncers, 3 red beads, and a size 2 hook for the big suckers. I found a shorter 3' leader to be most effective. We caught 153 walleyes on our trip and I would bet we had at least 5 times that many hits!. Now, with all that said, we don't feed line to walleyes to help avoid gut hooks and that certainly gives rise to a poor hook-up ratio. We ate fish twice and brought home our limits. Everything else went back. The walleyes ranged in size from ~13" to 26". We caught lots of slot fish and fair numbers of 15"-19" fish. In addition, we caught 10 smallmouth and only one jumbo. Our really big fish were never landed. My cousin had a true giant walleye laying on top of the water right beside the boat and grabbed her by the base of the tail in an attempt to scoop her into the boat. She was having none of that and with a major flop, snapped the leader. We didn't use a net because I forgot it at the dock. Getting old is a bitch. I had two different walleyes(I'm sure) hooked on Tuesday that came off directly below the boat. Both fish I thought were snags when they hit. Anyone who thinks walleyes don't fight have never caught a truly big one. Both fish ran off several yards of line while fighting to get free. Eventually they both succeeded. I would hesitate to say how big I think my cousins fish was that he had beside the boat, but, my wife and I have caught some really big walleyes in Lake Vermilion and I know what a big walleye looks like. That walleye was absolutely enormous.  We've decided to bring my cousin's two sons back up for a short trip a little later on. Hopefully, the walleyes will still be in a feeding frenzy. Lastly, I usually like to include pictures with my posts. I have a big problem this time, I got a new phone and I know nothing about transferring the pictures. That will be remedied when we come back up. In the meantime....... Good Fishing, MarkB🙂

I don't think Moose needs my help, he seems to do pretty well with the ice fishing and grouse hunting by the pictures! 👌

I got some cool jigs this year this a picture from Slab Bait Shop. The 2nd to last photo is one of my jig boxes with them in it. The last photo has some Macula jigs and if your eyes are getting old these are awesome to tie!! I won the auction for the last photo so I got all of the plastics and jigs.
