Lets hear all about it!!

Ok folks - story time! How did you all do??

Was out on the duck at about 9:00, drove around the smooth lake looking for fish with no luck. Finally about 11:00 - went south of the landing to the creek (I'm sure you know more about it than I do) Put the trolling motor in and found ourselves in about 5 feet of water - looked down to see a school of about 100 walleye darting in front of the boat. Managed to catch one out of that group and couldn't find them again. Worked that bank for about an hour and got our two limits of pike, plus threw another couple limits back. Them slimers were hungry.

Then my dad was getting cold so we went back to the dock. Waited for 15 minutes and still had other folks waiting in front of us, so I talked my dad into fishing some more in front of that same creek - wasn't there a half hour and caught 20 or so walleye. Got our 12 and let the rest go. Was a lot of fun - reminded me of Canada. Fish almost every cast (or at least bites and stolen minnows) We also ccaught 5 jumbo perch.

So that's my day!!

I want to take my mom out tomorrow as she has never caught a pike or walleye.

Does anyone know if there is a better jumbo perch spot? (Just in case we can't find the walleye tomorrow)

How did everyone else do?

Hey Clueless, sounds like you and your dad had a good day...good thing for the delay getting off the lake so you could get your limit of walleye.

We heard that there was a lot of people out on the Duck yesterday. We got a late start and then had to install a different troller (that ended up taking more than a couple of minutes) so decided to go to Gilstad for a couple hours to get used to it. The water temps were a little warmer there (near 50), but only had a couple of bites.

Had some folks say that they went to their favorite opener spots on the different lakes (Leech, Rabideau, Gilstad and Blackduck) and didn't have the luck they normally do. A couple of the guys who came in last night had their limit of perch and walleyes from Blackduck and another group of two went to Upper Red and brought in 20 crappies that were around 12", with a couple of 13 1/4" ones. Haven't decided if we are going to do Blackduck or Red today..then have to hit the other one tomorrow smile.gif

Hey everyone, Fishing this opener was real slow due to the clear cold water. The only spot we filled out was by the creek. The jetti was really hot. All of the other early season walleye spots were not holding walleyes. At least they were there for a while. I went the the creek this morning with some other people and nothing was there from 6-8 am. Out in front of hillcrest there were some northerns hitting. I'm heading to Gull lake tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. LOW tomorrow morning for some hawgs!!!
Good luck everyone. There were a lot of people that didn't do very well here for opener. The only spot we caught fish was by the creek.

We were able to get into the walleye bite tonight on Blackduck, left around 6 and got back in at 11. Managed to get a limit of nice eating size walleyes, as did the other guy I was with. The other folks that went with us pulled in five nice eaters in their boat. Hopefully the weather will warm up the water temps to improve the fishing.

Going to give Upper Red a try tomorrow to see if we can get the crappie bite smile.gif

Drake, glad to hear you got into a few. We did go back Sunday and got 9 more. Fished in the evening. As soon as it got dark it was like turning off a light switch and noone caught fish. There were about a dozen boats and nothing. We were the first to leave and about 5 boats followed suit. How long do you predict they will be in there spawning? Only 2 of the walleye we cleaned were spawned out (males) and one female pike was also done spawning - none of the male pike.

Would like to get my mom up there this comming weekend if we get a few spare hours to let her have a try at a walleye as she has never caught one.

Hey Clueless, glad you got into some more when you went back out. Did you take your mom or did dad get to the boat first smile.gif Don't know about the walleye spawning this year with the water temps the way they are. The ones that we cleaned on Monday night had already spawned. Didn't make it back over to the Duck yesterday, but the forecast for this week is showing nice days after our chance of rain today so if we make it out there we will let you know how we do and the scoop on the spawn.

Good luck to you and mom...hope she gets into some nice ones this weekend grin.gif

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
