Hows the ice? Anybody been after pheasants in the cattails?

I'm not talking ice fishing here, I'm talking about getting onto the big sloughs/small lakes with that 30 yard ring of cattails around the edge and going after pheasants. Not so concerned about the open ice, guys are starting to ice fish around here (Willmar area), more concerned about in the cattails, sooner or later when the dog gets birdy I'll get lured in. Thinking about getting out tomorrow afternoon - could be good with some new snow!! Anybody been out in the cattails?

Was out on ice Sunday and busted through a little bit. Was out yesterday around Glenwood and busted through alot in the thicker tails and thick grass, went in almost to the waist. With these temps it isn't going to get better.

Just got back in. Open ice is alright, interior cattail clogged stuff is kinda ugly in spots. Dropped a leg through a couple of times. Saw quite a few birds but man are they spooky shocked.gif Managed one rudy for the effort though grin.gif

Thanks for the update guys. Plan on making it out this afternoon and a couple of other times this weekend, its my last shot since I have to head over to Wisc next weekend to the inlaws. Think I'll follow my first instinct and wear hip boots. Hopefully I won't go over them!!! smile.gif

BlackJack, We have been hunting the sloughs all this week, the deep water side of the cattails seems just fine, but once you start into the heavier stands you get wet. Each day I've been out I've gone in one or two times. The birds are starting to use the sloughs now, and are extremely spooking, maybe because of all the yelling as cold water hits my body ??? Good luck.

Where you located in Ia? Are you in the cat tails?

I've been going down lately almost every weekend but still only able to get on WMAs. Haven't found any cat tails to hit yet. I've been around the Lake Mills / Emmons area.

My cousin is buying a license on 12/15. This way he can use it next year as well. I was hoping to take him down the last 2 weekends of the year. Any suggestions where?

Thanks,
Jason

They were in cattails and drainage ditches today. Kicked up 14 hens and 3 roosters (too far to shoot) in Iowa. Then kicked up 12 hens and 4 rooster (got 1) in Mn.

Dog is dead tired and so am I.

Ice is iffy in WMA's in North metro area. Both Sat and Sun fell through many times. A couple times over the boots and the water is pretty cold. If you stay on the lake side it will support you no problem. If you get into the cattails and are over a soft, muck, boggy bottom watch it. (Only problem is the birds that I found this weekend where where the ice is iffy) So make sure you are safe out there.

Found out the same as you guys, the open water ice was good, anything in the cattails was bad, went thru everytime I ventured into the cattails, a couple of times almost went over my hip boots. My feet are sore from wearing the hip boots all weekend, but my feet stayed dry!! smile.gif

Had a grand weekend though, two each on Friday, Sat, and Sunday! Nice way to end the season - if I don't sneak out some day during the week (can't hunt next weekend, inlaw commitment). Theres birds out there, my advice would be to find those sloughs/small lakes with a ring of cattails around them, get on the open water ice and go, let your dog run the cattails. And not just any slough, find one with some cropland around it. You still need to put in your required three miles per bird, and you'll bypass any birds farther into the cattails, but with a good dog, you'll get some birds. Good luck!

Speaking of good dogs, what would we do without them? By Sunday, my 7 year old female lab was bleeding from multiple abrasions on her legs, bleeding from her titties, was all red around the eyes and nose, yet if I came home today and brought out the shotgun, she'd be yipping and turning circles, ready to go. I dropped a couple of birds in the cattails that I thought were lost and she found them, plus the great work she did rousting them up. I heard one rooseter try to flush out of the cattails twice before he made it. But I guess if I had a yellow monster with teeth on my tail, I'd flush too. smile.gif Gotta love a good hunting dog! And you gotta love that pheasant hunting! When I die and go to heaven, I'm going to find an old female lab that works 20 yards in front of me, and we're going to hunt pheasants for the rest of eternity! Or if I end up in hell, I'll find a young male lab waiting for me and every rooster that I see will be flushing at 80 yards and the lab will be looking over his shoulder wondering whether you're coming and why are you puffing so hard?

Good luck to all on the last week!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
