No Cackle Roosters

All of the roosters that my dog has flushed, none of them have cackled. Is this because they are all young birds???

Anyone else seen or not heard this?

Hey Mike I have noticed this as well. Opening weekend more so (probably because I have only shot one bird since). I did however notice that the birds on opener were all younger except for one (it had 34 bars on the tali feather) but that one did not make a sound as well. The one I shot last weekend did cackle though. I like the theory of the younger birds though. But I don't know if it is true or not.

Hunt em up!!

I also noticed this. I also thought the same about it bieng adult/younguns. I think I'll stick to that theory.

I have shot some very young birds this year because of the cackle, that was the only way that i could tell that they were roosters, but i have noticed that there are not very many cackling birds this year.

If you wait for every bird to cackle before you shoot, you're going to have pretty thin soup!! Even late in the season, with all mature birds, I would guess that less than a third cackle when they get up. And the harder the birds have been hunted, the less they cackle. I think it has more to do with the type of cover, the heavier it is, the tighter they'll hold, and the more likly they are to cackle when the dog flushes them. I've seen a lot of young, immature roosters shot when you can't identify them (except for the red face patch), then they cackle...
