Hey Matt - I coach a high school team and Mankato is recruiting a couple of our guys. Do you have any insight to offer on the program down there? I know they had been down but I saw the beat Concordia-St. Paul last week. I also know that they've had a few regime changes lately.

Carl,
The coaching staff is strong at MSU. My time was limited due to a back injury early in the year on a return, but you can expect a solid special teams unit as well as defense. The offense took a while to click but they are rolling now. MSU retired an outstanding safety last year, one of the conference's best. The RB was solid last year too, and by solid I mean in both recieving and rushing. MSU plays some tough teams and its a great opportunity for a post-high school football player. MSU competes in Div II and plays top-notch teams like UND, UMD and Colorado just to name a few. Your players should feel pretty good about getting a call/letter from MSU.

Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson

Thanks for the reply, Matt. I appreciate it. I haven't really noticed Mankato since Runkel left and I'm not even sure when that was. We have a runner/reciever with 11 TD's in 4 games. He's getting recruited by most Northern Sun teams and by MIAC teams. He's really good but he's not very big. Our QB is a great player and he's the valedictorian as well. Mankato has called about him but I think he will end up out east. Thanks again and if you or anyone else has any insight, I would appreciate it.

Huskyplayer15,
Is moses on Fishing Minnesota?

I'm a freshman in college, and former Maple Grove Crimson Football and basketball player. It was really hard not putting on a uniform this fall for the first time in years. Had a good run while I was there; two trips to State in football and a section runner-up in B-Ball.

I'll be able to watch ya this fall against Maple Grove for Homecoming. I'll cheer for ya, but still bleed Crimson. Our team is a bunch of Coke heads. If they got off the Cocane they would be better. Seroulsly, 40% of our junior class last year was on coke, including some of our good football players. Already had a starting running back and reciever get kicked off the team before the season! I'm sure you know who Greg Martin (reciever) is from MG, take him out for me would ya? He's talented in B-ball and F-ball and will go D-1 but he's the worst teammate ever. He's cool off the field/court but is a spaz while playing even in practice. Many fights in B-ball practice between him and other teammates.

I remember Moses real well from b-ball. good player; but threw a few cheap shots. Him and Martin always went at it.

Oh ya almost forgot Huskie,

Congrats to you guys beatin Blane. I always like seeing Blane getting beat. Ryan Parsons goes to school up here(NDSU). He was quarterback for Blane last year and redshirted this year for the Bison.

I do have to say this is the year to come in the NWSC though. The past three years had much more talent than this year. Blane lost everybody last year, we (MG) lost almost all of our line, offensive and defensive. Every team has lost overall size in the past 2 years. Much weaker than the past.

Two years ago we had an incredible team and finished 6-4 in the conference. Had a line that averaged 280, with one going to the gophers and another one to Northern Illinois. had a Defense that shut out Blane, Champlin,Osseo, and Park Center. Our D-II linebacker played with a broken ankle against Champlin Park in the first round of state after breaking it when we beat Wayzata in section championship for the 2nd straight year.(Shut them out also) If he wasn't injured we should have won state. Lost to CP by 7, when we beat them 28-0 in reg season.

yeah moses is here on fm, not much but he does show up. I met Martin, at the Northwest Suburban Leadership Conference this summer, and met him, I didnt think he was a jerk at all, to the point we still talk, I dont know if he goes d-1 though. Yeah I have seen him spaz before too.

So you had to play with moses? He is one of the nicest kids you'll meet, and when the scoreboard comes on he's a different person. He's always looking out for the team, so for those 'bows he throws at you, is probably cause he thought someone on your side threw one.

We didnt play Blaine last week, we played and beat coon rapids at home for their homecoming.

It is definatly going to be a good game against you guys, it will go down to the wire.

thanks for the support.

Oh I had to run against parsons in track this year, he has some legs to run on though.

See Ya later,
Best Fishes
Chris

Yea, Moses sounds just like Martin. Very nice guy off the court/field, but on the court he's totally different. Martin problem is he cant distinguish between a practice and a game. His intensity is excellent for the team, but when cheapies are thrown at your own teammates it gets a little out of hand. You're right, I think Martin and Moses were goin at it and Moses took it out on all of us. Had the right too. Moses has one hell of a release on his three pointer. Very talented kid!

P.S I was kiddin about takin out Martin, I'd hate to see his future dissappear from an injury. Just was frustrated with him last year during the seasons.

Oh, I was misinformed about you guys playin Blaine last weekend by a kid that went to the Blane homecoming game. He was probably too drunk to remember who they played; he knew they lost though.

We won our first homecoming in school history on friday night, our qb moses was friday nights best our running back had 201 yards off offense, and our defense stood up and held them to only six points. 39-6, so it was a good game, I hope thier running back gets back soon , sounded like he was their heart and soul of the offense, bring on MG, see how that game goes.

MJ when did you play at CR I played D-line in 91-92 then transfered. I then played at Moorhead State which has really gone down hill. Lack of scholarship money and title 9 I think are taking there toll.

Huskie and others who are on high school teams enjoy every minute of it it is hard to beat the times you are experiencing now. Adam

ATM,
I graduated in 01. A little after your days, but the school probably was the same smile.gif Who was your coach at CR in 92? D-Line, the "hogs" is what we called our D-Line when I played. Some big boys and they were pushers thats for sure. We had a pretty solid D. We had an outstanding Linebacker, Digger Anderson, who holds a lot of tackle records in high school and now he plays at UND and got a few defensive player of the year awards and got a lot of national recognition. Next fall will be his last college season. Digger has a lot of post-college potential in my opinion. Quick, strong and very smart on the field.

Only if a litte of that smarts could be passed on to the Vikes smile.gif Nice to see Hovan finally break through and get a sack, we needed that one. No more prevent-passive defense, the Vikes need to step it up and stop giving up 7-8 yard passes.

Anyone hear how CR did friday? Who's ranked in state right now?

MJ,
My coach was Lukens. He didnt last long. A few of the guys I played with went to UND they played with Kliensaser. They also had some good linbackers from CR a few years after me go to UND. Yeah there was some big boys on the d-line. I played o-line in college. I'm a slim 6'4" 299 pounds I might have hit a white castle tonight I dont want to get to far under 300. grin.gif

The Vikings just about gave me a heart attack today. But not as bad as the gophers yesterday. Adam

Adam,
So did you play with Donny Kieser? He played at CR and ended up going to UND. He should be around your age. He punted for UND but I think he played safety at CR too. UND has had, and will continue to have, good players. They have a good program going.

Yep, Donny was our special teams and kicking coach when I was at CR. He's also a big fisherman and hunter. He normally works at the Thorne Bros Booth at the Ice Show too. Good guy.

White Bear is ranked 9th in 5A with wins over Hastings and Moundsview. Their only loss was to Minnetonka (non-conference) which is ranked in the top 5 in 5A.

Shameless plug for WB since 2 of my boys are starters grin.gif

Not even sure what class we are but EGF has an undefeted season going so far. My kid is only in Pop Wardner so I don't pay too much attention yet. 7th grade next year, maybe he will finally get a chance to touch the ball since there will be no weight restriction.
UND football is awesome, tailgating at the "Al"

HuskiePlayer, Wow what happened to you guys in the Maple Grove game? What an *** whoopin, I'm sorry to say but it was. Are both you and Maple Grove 4-2? Brecke and Martin both had pretty nice games. Didn't get to watch a whole lot of the game as I was busy chatin with the old crew I hadn't seen for a while. Seemed like Moses had a rough game, but I don't really remember. Good luck the rest of the season! oh, another question, What section are you in? What teams are with ya?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
