Backherup... get ahold of yourself! Your team wins and you go off the deep end... go get that Paxil prescription refilled! Yes I was wrong and owe you a twelve pack.. but why in the world would you say I won't pay up?? I don't get that one! Then you go and say that "i'm a self proclaimed tough guy" with a name like buzzsaw???? and continue to rip on me by saying the quote signed by my name is wimpy or whatever???? To answer those two brilliant statements or personnal attacks of yours... First off I'm a muskie fisherman, hence Buzzsaw seemed fitting... plus Backherup was taken... and there is a famous quote used by a person that I thought was catchy since I cast and cast all day for the elusive Muskie and more often than not get shutdown... now hopefully your third grade education can help you comprehend what I've said. Did you notice that the Vikes won again??? hmmmm 5-1 and in control... even with the best WR in football on the bench!

Now go your your semi truck up with Paxil and put your silver and blue drag outfit on and go play with your buddies at the McStop in Elko.

You guys get just as excited as the boys in my FF league. Be careful with the Paxil jokes, the stuff works, for a while...

That was my comment... I saw Terry Bradshaw was taking it. It just seemed fitting to use it when I did. Hope it didn't offend you, I certainly didn't intend for it to.

I just broke open the sports page and noticed that the motor city kitties were dead last in the entire NFL in offense (yards per game).... sounds like an exciting team to watch. oh and I see that there defense is now ranked lower than the Vikings.. hmmmmm all very interesting.

My god!! Settle down there sport!! You're no fun to play with. I can see where this is going...you can dish it out but you can't take it back ("he started it mommy"). It's alright...I'm through playing with you, because you don't have anything constructive to say and you're way too excitable. It's too easy to get your goat up. My mission is accomplished...and deep down inside, you're very afraid of my Lions!! Keep your 12-pack, you're gonna need it more than me...

Like I've said before, we'll see at the end how it all unfolds. My prediction for the Super Bowl is Philadelphia vs. New England from the looks of things...

ohhhh boo hooo hooo, you seem to be the one that can't take the facts. I'm sure when and if the kitties play above their heads we will hear more from you... and if they don't then it will end up like that Detroit Tigers thread you started and deserted once they were 20 games back of first place. Did you really tour the world as a guitarist based out of Los Angeles? I just read your bio to make sure I wasn't getting Charles Manson upset or anything.

Lions' Standout Rogers Captures NFC's Weekly "Defender" Award

With the season fast approaching the halfway mark, Rogers has been a dominating force for the Lions, registering four sacks (tied for the most recorded by a defensive tackle), 32 tackles (25 solo), one blocked field goal (which was returned for a touchdown) and one fumble recovery -- not to mention serving as a primary deterrent to the opposition's rushing attack.

Against the Giants -- with Detroit holding a 14-10 lead -- the former University of Texas standout sacked Giants quarterback Kurt Warner at midfield in the third quarter, forcing New York to punt. A few possessions later, Detroit's offense sealed the 15-point triumph with two impressive touchdown drives.

Rogers is the second Lions defensive lineman to capture conference "Player of the Week" honors this year. End James Hall (who has a team-high 5.5 sacks) garnered the same award for his performance in Detroit's 17-10 victory on Oct. 10 in Atlanta. Similar to the Giants game, the defense then totaled six sacks and created a bevy of forced-fumble opportunities.

Other Lions to earn awards this year include: Safety Bracy Walker (NFC special teams player of the week), return specialist Eddie Drummond (NFC special teams player for September) and receiver Roy Williams (NFL best's rookie in Week Two and NFL's top rookie for September).

The Lions (4-2 overall) are 3-0 away from Ford Field this season. On Sunday, the club travels to Dallas; and should it emerge victorious, it would mark the first time in 48 years the franchise has won four consecutive road tilts.

Detriot is last in offense and 2nd to last in defense, how can you expect anything from your team? The only reason the lions are 2nd in the division is because they have forced turnovers and some lucky ones I might add too.

It's ok though, we have plenty of room on our bandwagon if you want ot jump on, packer fans too.

Vikings vs New England in the super bowl.

I say the lions finish around 500 this year, maybe a little better, get another good draft and compete for the division against the vikes next year.

The Lions are a better team this year. Not a good team, just better. They are winning games. They (MIGHT) even beat the Vikings once this year. But in football now a days any team can beat another team on any given day. Look at what the fins did last week. But to compare the Lions to the Vikings this year is just wrong. They are improving, but so are the Viks. They are young, but again so are the Viks. They have some talent, but not as much as the Viks. We will see as the season plays out who are the ones at the top.

Is it Viks or Vikes? Settle on one...I'll settle for Viqueens.

Since they're getting their arses handed to them (at home no less!) to the same Giants my Lions destroyed last week. Let's see...hmmm, yeah, this a team headed for the playoffs, NOT!. As Jim Mora so eloquently stated,"Playoffs!!, Playoffs!! We're not going to no stinking playoffs!!"

Neither are the Vikings, and I don't want to hear about the injury to Randy Moss either (you can add Udeze, Moore, and Hovan to the injury list). Since the Lions played through the first 5 weeks with 6 starters on the injury list (LB-Boss Bailey, WR-Charles Rogers, RB-Kevin Jones, CB-Dre Bly, CB-Fernando Bryant and WR-Roy Williams). Detroit still hung in there and beat Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and the Giants. You didn't want to hear my excuses, now you get to taste the medicine...enjoy. I know I am... Giants 34- Vikings 13 (4th quarter)...

How about the Colts...getting beat again, by Kansas City (they're back)!!

...and Houston beating Jacksonville!!

And your lions just got beat by a team the vikes slammed earlier in the year, so whats your point? Say what you want about the vikes but the lions got beat by a much worse team today than the vikes did. Vikes still lead the division.

Yeah, I agree the Lions should have beat Dallas. But they had to abandon the running game early when they lost their back-up fullback Steven Trejo (starter Corey Schlesinger was inactive due to a hamstring injury)...and they scored too quickly on all their touchdowns, allowing Dallas to possess the ball longer (38 mins to 21 mins).

Personally, I'm not fond of the "west coast offense". It relies on far too many pre-snap reads on the coverage. But a lot of teams nowadays roll coverages, bring all kinds of pressure, so they have to read things on the run, and that’s something I'm really not sure works anymore. Kind of like when the "3-4 defense" became so hot, it was different at the time, but now teams have effectively exploited that style and there's been a return to the "4-3 defense" and some hybrids of that style.

All the teams currently running the "west coast offense" are struggling with it. Besides Detroit...Atlanta, San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay to some degree, to name a few.

The one team doing well with it is Philadelphia. But they run a modified version of the west coast offense having such constant threats in Donovan McNabb, Bryant Westbrook, Terrell Owens, Todd Pinkston, Chad Lewis and Freddie Mitchell!

The bottom line this week is...with a Lions win (Washington Redskins @ Detroit) and a Vikings loss Monday night (Peyton Manning may set single-game offensive records against the Vikings defense!), the Lions move into a tie for first at 5-3 with Green Bay already at 4-4 (with a bye this week). I think the Vikings are done...the wheels are coming off! Just like last year at this same time...

Hey backherup,

How does that crow taste? Even if the purple lose tonight, which they won't, they're still in 1st place.

The lions don't have a chance this year, you might as well

start rooting for the purple. grin.gif

BackHerUp-

I noticed that you have said anything after the first half. What happened. Like I said before the Lions are a better team this year, but not a good team. I mean they lost to the Redskins. What was their record before this game? Anyways, we have the 2 best offence's against the 2 worst defence's tonight. Should be a shoot out even though Moss is out.

Ohhh booo hooo hoooo, those Lions were overmatched and BEAT by poor Redskins squad! Like I continue to say... The Lions are NOT as good as you wish they were! The Colts will be tough for us tonight, but they are sooo much better than the Redskins!! Waiting paitiently for your eloquent response as to what happened to your motor city kitties.

Sorry...I had to go to work. Had to take a set of 28' trailers to Des Moines. But anyway...getting back to football

The difference between me and you (all of you)...I can still enjoy my Lions, after all Detroit's a much improved team over last year! The fact that we're still in the running (Detroit is locked in a three-way tie with Green Bay and St. Louis for the second and final wild-card spot) makes it that much more fun for me.

The fact that the Vikings are backing up to the rest of the NFC North is of no surprise to me and also brings Green Bay right into the mix (one game back). And the way the Bears destroyed the Giants, I wouldn't count them out!grin.gif

Still, with all that went wrong Sunday against the Redskins, the Lions outproduced the Redskins in total yardage, first downs, third and fourth-down conversions and passing yards. That's a positive and shows improvement in some key areas...

It's the running game that has to improve. For that I blame Mariucci for spending so much off-season practice time on pass protection and for calling the plays in spite of having an offensive coordinator in Sherman Lewis.

Frankly, I don't know what to think of Lewis, (even though he's credited with Brett Favre's developement) and I'm not fond of the "west coast offense"...but as a fan, I can only watch and cheer...

We got Jacksonville this week and they're without Byron Leftwich...we gotta take advantage of that.

Vikings will get destroyed by Green Bay this weekend... wink.gif

How about this statistic...the Green Bay Packers are 21-7 (.750)in November and December in the last 3 1/2 years...that doesnt' bode well for the Vikings or the Lions since Minnesota has yet to play them (twice!) and Detroit plays them in Green Bay (December 12th)...

Rogers_XBody_1110.JPG

For a team that's 5-3 and has four comeback wins, the Jacksonville Jaguars, surprisingly post a zero in the crucial "takeaway ratio" -- surrendering three fumbles and seven interceptions.

“We’ve been much better at protecting the ball, but not quite as good as Detroit, which leads the league with only six giveaways," says Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio. "But we’ve reduced our number in half from where we were last year. Protecting the football has been big and will remain an emphasis for us.”

Detroit's defense has been stellar in certain categories, racking up 23 sacks (including 5.5 by defensive end James Hall) and collecting 16 takeaways this season (a plus-10 overall rating). And linebacker Earl Holmes has tallied a superb 80 tackles in eight games.

Needing a win to hang with NFC North leaders Minnesota (5-3), Detroit (4-4) still has a partial-inside track to a wild-card spot, tied with Green Bay and St. Louis.

Ok...now this one hurt...a lot! Joey Harrington just keeps getting worse and worse. Granted Stephen Alexander dropped an easy catch in the end zone and Corey Schlesinger dropped the 4th down attempt (that would've got the 1st down)...but my lord(!) how many times is Harrington going to miss open receivers by throwing it in the dirt, or behind a guy (almost getting Roy Williams decapitated) or into double-coverage or how about holding on to it for so long that the receivers are no longer open. His decision-making is pathetic. It takes him too long to survey a play as it unfolds before him...and by the time he sees it...the receiver is no longer open...and he throws it anyway!

He's so streaky...its no longer funny. I'd like to see Mariucci start Mike McMahon but Mooch said in the post-game press conference:

"We're just not where we need to be, for a variety of reasons," Mariucci said.

"He's only one part of the passing game," Mariucci said. "He's got the ball in his hands. There's more to it.

"It comes down to three hours on Sunday. We've got to be better than we are."

Mariucci said he is not considering changing quarterbacks.

"The change...is to be better," Mariucci said.

Ha! Easier said than done there partner!

What an incredible one-man show Eddie Drummond was. Two (2) punt returns for touchdowns in the 4th quarter!!

And that poor defense has got to be exhausted. Every game they perform relatively well, not giving up a lot of points (well, except to the Eagles and Packers) for being on field so long! All because Joey Harrington can't keep the chains moving!! Arrrrrrrrrgghhh!

Well, the good thing is we play the Vikings next week and I believe their defense has allowed even more points!!!

I can't wait til next week! The purple should finally break out of their Mossless funk! If the Vikes defense was ANY good we would have won the last couple games... 3 point losses as time expires against the Colts and Packers on the road is not horrible... but nontheless are two losses. As usual it will probably go down to the last week of the season.

P.S. The Lions are OK, I agree that Harrington just bites! Kevin Jones ran hard and the defense played decent (albeit against a backup QB).

What's your predeiction Backherup?? I say 31-17 Vikes.

28-24 Lions (Joey Harrington and Kevin Jones will have great games, only because they're due)...and by the way:

--------------------------------------------------

NFL.com wire reports

Moss likely out another game for Vikings...

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (Nov. 15, 2004) -- Randy Moss will probably miss at least one more game for the Minnesota Vikings, whose All-Pro receiver hasn't caught a pass in a month because of a torn right hamstring.

Coach Mike Tice said that Moss is progressing well, but won't be allowed to play again until he completes a week of practice. The Vikings (5-4) have lost three straight, although Daunte Culpepper passed for 345 yards without Moss in a 34-31 defeat at Green Bay.

Tice said he doubted Moss would be ready to play this Nov. 21 against Detroit, but a return for the Nov. 28 game against Jacksonville is "more than likely."

-------------------------------------------------

The NFL Network stated that it was a "hamstring tear" and not a "strain". He also has hemorhaging at the injury. Not good. I wouldn't have played him against Saints and Giants. Big mistake, but that's just my opinion.

Okay I've got to say (even after all the smack talk) that I feel sorry for the fans of Michigan football teams this weekend... first the Wolverines get popunded into submission by their arch rivals the Ohio State Buckeyes in a way down year flor OSU! Then they are cruising after three quarters against a Minnesota team that looked lost and played horrible for most of the game... only to have Culpepper jam it down their throats like a Jenna Jameson video! On top of all of this the Detroit Pistons stud Ben Wallace starts a fight with Artest... who gets bombed by some [commercial-or-naughty-word] Detroit fan with a cup of ice.. goes into the stands and does the unthinkable! If Wallace was a man and not a bad hairdo wearing sore losing [commercial-or-naughty-word] he would have taken the dumb Artest foul and moved on... instead we got to see how classless the Pistons fans are, as well as Wallace! Artest, Jackson and O'neal are all just stupid for getting sucked into the Detroit black hole!

LOSER CITY PERIOD!

Backhgerup, don't take this personally because I did feel bad for you this weekend in all sincerity. What are your thoughts? maybe we should start a basketball thread for the banter I just spewed.

During the collapse of the Motor City Kitties Sunday, I asked myself the question, "Just how pathetic are the Detroit Lions?"

Let's see....so many bad things to focus on. The GM, Matt Millon, may be the biggest bonehead in any position in the NFL, ever. The Olandis Garry experiment went about as successfully as the Scotty Mitchell one. I bet Mooch realizes by now that Joey Harrington ain't no Joey Montana. Have you seen a worse quarterback in the NFC North since Charlie Ward? Great pick, Lions, great pick. Watching Harrington throw 8 yards short on a 9 yard pass to the flats is what his talent is all about.

Beyond all these factors, however, is the overall picture. The Detroit Lions are so pathetic they drove the only player they EVER had into early retirement rather than rack up the most numbers by any running back ever. Can't blame Barry Sanders though. If you had to wear a blue lion on your helmet you'd feel pretty ridiculous too.

I'm looking forward to watching Peyton Manning thrash the Lions today, it will be like taking candy from a baby. Lets see how close the kitties will keep this game.... maybe there will be a Roy Williams sighting today... I guess that depends on if Hipple or Landry show up because we all know how painful it is to watch Harringbunk. How come Backherup hasn't made a comeback after the Vikes loss??? Hmmmmmmm probably on the road huh?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
