First time on Buffalo = Success

Recommended Posts

Just got home from Buffalo, fished off the courthouse, alot of guys out and moving, I sat quietly and caught 23 nice crappies and 2 northerns that ran 4-5 pounds, after 4 action was pretty constant till I left, marked alot of fish bite was light but there were definetly some agressive crappies biggest was a touch over 11 inches, minnow heads worked the best, fished in 25 feet of water. Good luck guys

Just wondering you said they were pretty constant from 4 to when you left, what time did you leave the lake approximately may I ask?

I started packing up around 6. They started filtering in at 4 but by 5 it was on, so basically 2 pretty good hours of action. No complaints here.

Way to go iceguy75...
...you sat quietly and patiently, and that must have been the key...there's been so much noise there (around the Courthouse area) when all them houses were there, plus the atv's and sleds running...glad to hear they're moving on. I stopped going there 2 weekends ago because of all the commotion...

I was there and tried the afternoon bite yesterday. I am now with the above post. I will not be back as there was more houses and ramrods there then one could see accross all of lake of the woods. I had a white chev suv drive 20 yards away 3 times! Someone also dropped there perm. house at 4:45PM right next to where I was fishing. Only 3 crappies and one eye. Heading to URL and LOW on wed. thank god I can get away from this type of traffic.

Man! Went to Buffalo today...what a ZOO!
Set up just outside of the area known as "The Courthouse"...what a joke! There were probably 50 houses on that spot and people driving their cars fast. Still too much commotion. I was thinking it would be quieter...maybe people at work today, but no such luck. Well, gotta go to bed...I'm on-call for work tonight...hoping they don't call!

Yea, that court house area is just a party zone until the kids are back at school. We set up out there New Year's Day and spent the night. Trucks, augers, and generators running through the night. Some guys setup right outside our house and ran a generator directly on the ice all night long. We could see the vibrations from it in our holes. Thanks pal!

Needless to say, fishing was bad.

Talk about traffic how about the cars and trucks that can drive anywhere on the lake but they choose to drive between two houses that are no more then 10 feet apart. I was there today trying for Crappies and ending up with Northerns.. Boy I hate those things. We ahd two portables and we ended up having about 5 vehicles drive between us and another house ten feet away just for no reason at all I think these people think it is cute til someone get's hurt... shocked.gif

Has the courthouse area slowed down? I have been out in that area for 3 weeks and only 10 houses were in the area in a few weeks ago. I had to leave on 1/1/04 in anger. I say, when someone gets within 25 feet of an existing house you have every right to push their house it to shore with them in it!

Well, Leinenkugels, I hear you but...you can't, however, "no person may erect a fish house/shelter/dark house within 10 feet of an existing fish house/shelter /dark house", according to the MN Fishing Regs...

...if I remember correctly, MN Boating Regs don't allow another to pass any closer than 50' or between you and a shoreline, so why wouldn't that apply to any motorized vehicle (cars/trucks, snowmobiles, ATV's, boats, jetskis, etc.) and on on ice too?

...and I'm gonna start posting a "no-wake zone" sign around my portable! (the speeds some of these people drive on ice, and the ice is barely a foot thick!) That's what they say caused those 10 trucks to fall in at Buffalo Lake a few weeks ago...a wave hit shore and broke ice from a car going to fast...

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
