Pulaski ?

Recommended Posts

I have never fished Pulaski on the hard water... does anyone know about any dangerous ice conditions out there?? For example, are there any springs or warm spots to look out for??

Thanks for any help which keeps me dry!!

I don't know the lake very well, but I have heard that there are a lot of spings in this lake. It also seems to ice up later than other lakes in the area.

10-4 on the "springs"...that's why you won't see as many vehicles on that lake, especially during early ice...and the ones that do drive onto the lake are usually the locals who either have fished it for years or live on the lake and know the "danger" zones...
That lake has some serious structure to it! There are some 80 foot holes out there and some sunken islands rising to just 5 feet beneath the surface too. Great lake, with great numbers of fish...but an extremely difficult lake to figure out without investing some time...click on the DNR link below for lake info:

This cold weather should make it safe. Is the lake all snow covered or did the wind blow it off? Hopefully, I can get out there tonite. Never fished this lake before, so any info. about this lake would be nice. I do have a map!!

Yeah...as deep as that lake is, it probably creates its own currents!! wink.gif It's usually the last lake in the area to freeze up solid...

The weather probably has not helped, but is anyone aware of the ice conditions on Pulaski??

It just froze up early last week. I think it was two week ago you could have open water fished Pulaski..... so be very careful! I think you guys should wait for another good hard freeze.

Went by it this morning...didn't look good. Hard to tell what's going on with all the melting snow! No one was out there, except in the back bay (known as "Little Pulaski"), and those must have been residents...

I have been working on remodeling a house on the lake. There should be plenty of ice. There is a big group of people fishing little P and ATV's and portables on the big lake. If I wanted to fish it I would hit it hard. The time is now.

I agree with you, the time is now!...however, yesterday there was one (count my finger!) fish house on the main lake and several in Little Pulaski...and the lake was open as of last week, so...I'm not risking it and no one else was either!! grin.gif

I drove by Pulaski Saturday afternoon and saw 3 people walking on the west side of the lake and 1 portable. With the rain and warm temps you would be CRAZY to be out there right now.

I just stopped by pulaski and drilled three holes. 1st hole was about 30 feet from the ramp and had about 10 inches of ice. 2nd hole about 75 feet out and had about 6 inches, 3rd hole was 100+ out and had +/- 6inches. I saw 2 house, 1 was way out on the hump.

I'm gonna try to get out there either thurs or on the weekend...

does anyone know if its possible to access the lake (i.e drive out with a truck or an ATV) by that park area in the NE corner - right between the entrance to little pulaski and the guy with the plane??

or do you have to come all the way across from the public access in the SW corner??

thanks!!!

I think I would hold off driving on Pulaski for a while.
I did see what looked like an access on Little Pulaski last summer. Its on the east side of Lil Pulaski and was in the among the houses but you may be able to use it.

It's posted "No Lake Access"...but people park their cars in the cul-de-sac and go in anyway...I'd be afraid of being vandalized out of spite...but then again, that's probably where I'd go out now...

Fished Pulaski yesterday...

First, we tried to get on over on the NE corner, but the "No public access" signs and the scowling guys standing by thier trucks were a deterrent... so, we drove back around the lake to the pubic access...

There were people strung out along the SW shore, about 50-100 years out... no one seemed to be catching much... there was only about 6-7 inches of ice, and I had wife and kids with, so I didnt dare try to cross over the main part of the lake to fish where I really wanted to... so we set up along the SW corner too, in 18-21 ft... (three holes 8 ft apart= 1 in 18', 1 in 19',1 in 21') Green and red glow jigs with minnows about 1' off the bottom...

Fished about 90 minutes (did I mention having the kids with?? smile.gif Caught two 3-4 pound northerns, that was all...

New Lowrance x67c worked well...

Good Luck everyone!!

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
