North End Sand Help

Xplorer

Recommended Posts

I am planning on coming down with my wife from duluth on sunday and would like to fish the north end sand. She is most comfortable using a lindy rig (tip for others:she doesnt like to set the hook hard enough/at all, so I switched all her rigs and line over to fireline and she misses many fewer fish with the no-stretch wink.gif )but tends to get frustrated when she hangs up alot.
I figure to go out of Malmo but have never fished the sand before. Will be on the water @8am and fish the day. Anyone care to give me a couple of general areas to start in?
Also, does Memorial Park have grills for use there? I figure we will come in and do lunch there and head back out.
And lastly, how bout a recommendation for a place for dinner either in Malmo or down the east side to big point.
Thanks alot for any help, this will most likely be our last fishing trip together for awhile as she is 8 months pregnant with our first (baby boy smile.gif ) and its getting uncomfortable for her. Our first fishing trip with "Junior" is already planned for a week in August up on Kab/Namakan , gotta start'em out young ya know!
Thanks again, Chris

Fish in 16-20 off the 15 foot drop off.
Last sunday off the sand break the walleyes
were hitting jumbo leeches on 8 foot snells with red hooks (#8) and a red bead strung on before the hook! We were also long lining letting the sinker drag. That worked better than keeping the sinker suspended off the bottom.
As for eating go to Carlsona. Yummy!!!

Last week the bite was a little better for me in front of Carlsona's. Pink hook and a couple of red beads. Don't be afraid to go a little deeper, we caught a few out in 25'. You might also want to give the Carlsona sand bar a shot there were quite a few boats out there and a couple of launch's.

If it's slow down there try the sand break between Ray's and the Wealthwood public access. Usually there's a lot less boats in this area, and the fishing has been good here as well. Try both leeches and crawlers.

As far as food I agree with Finlander, you can't beat Carlsona's.

Good Luck,
Scott

Finlander and Scott,
Thanks for the info, thats just what i'm looking for. Would there be a better spot to launch than Malmo, seems those areas are a bit further west on the northend (I'm not real familiar as you can tell)? I guess as long as the wind stays reasonable its only about 8mi from malmo to wealthwood access area. I will be able to give the GPS a good workout. I will be tying up some longer snells this week. We do alot of rigging up on Kab/Namakan but rarely need more than 4' leaders.
Legendelite, yes I gave them a try last summer (not great results but probably gave up too quick) but will tie up a couple. I've been using fireline and Gammi hooks and making sure they are sharp, and she has missed few fish. I think the circle's would be the ticket witha little practice. We used them last summer up in Alaska for halibut and we did great with them.

The Red Door resort is a little farther north and they do have a protected harbor , the ramp is a little steep but usually isn't a problem unless you have a real big boat and a real small truck or car. You could launch at Fishers resort which is just south of the Malmo landing .They also have a protected harbor . Last weekend the fish were biting very well right out from Fishers as well , alot of boats but the bite was on up and down that shoreline. If the wind comes out of the southwest strong the landing at Malmo can be a bummer when its time to load up. I'd have to second the vote on eating at Carlsona .

Depending on the weather, do not be afraid to go out even deeper. I fished out in front of Barnacles Resort on Sunday and we caught 8 fish in 28 to 30 feet of water between 1:00pm and 4:30pm.

Xplorer,

Ever thought of switching your wife over to circle hooks? No hook set required. Just a thought.

Hello Xplorer,

I was out on the sand on Tuesday. I did not fish Malmo, but was out from Wealthwood and east to Bucks resort. We had a South wind of about 20mph blowing in.

The fish seem to have moved out to deeper water now. I spoke to most of the boats around me and they did not have much action less than 19'. I found that to be true for myself. I tried 11 to 17' (for 2.5 hrs)with no success, all of the action was between 23 to 28', with 26 to 27 being the best.

The fish were scattered more on this day than any other in the past week and a half. This may be just a trend for the day, but I suspect that they are dispersing out to the mud and other areas. I managed to catch 9 fish (no slots).

All of the fish I caught were in areas where I marked baitfish and fish. No baitfish were marked in water less than 23'.

Thanks everyone, guess I'll have to see what the wind is doing and go from there. Really appreciate the info, its great to get a head start to shorten the learning curve grin.gif Now I just gotta hope that "mom" is feeling up to it on sunday!!!

On the south end...  A great week of walleye and sauger fishing on Lake of the Woods.  Lots of limits.  Good numbers of fish being caught, which includes eaters, slots and some trophy walleyes to make things interesting!    Most anglers are jigging with a frozen emerald shiner or live minnow.  Jig colors to consider are gold with a bright color such as gold / pink, gold / glow white and even gold with some tinsel.     Some reports of spinners starting to work well tipped with a minnow or crawler.  A great technique is drifting with a 2 ounce bottom bouncer and spinner rig. Fish being caught around the lake.  Trust your electronics and watch for fish.  In addition to the south shore where various schools of walleyes and saugers are living, consider the Garden Island area, Knight / Bridges Island area, and Twin Islands where good fish are being caught.   Most walleyes in that 18 - 24 foot depth.    Good pike reports.  Back bays are still holding good eaters and a few big females.  Some of the larger fish have made their way to the lake.   On the Rainy River...   Walleye anglers are finding some nice eater walleyes in the River.  There is always a number of walleyes that stay in the river all year.  Whether you like the beauty and secluded feel of the river, have a small boat or simply want to get out of the wind, the river is a great summer spot with little traffic.  Anchored up or slowly moving upstream with a jig and minnow, trolling spinners / crawlers or trolling crankbaits are all effective right now.     Smallmouth bass are plentiful in the Rainy River.  Whether you are a bass angler or simply want to mix up species, target feeder rivers, bridges, and areas with rocks.   The sturgeon season will re-open again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Excellent walleye fishing this past week.  The jig and minnow is the goto bait.  Anglers using spinners with crawlers or minnows and crankbaits are catching lots of fish as well.     Structure around the many islands holding walleyes.  Shallow flats areas with current are also heating up.     Great fishing reports from both sides of the border.  NW Angle anglers boating into Canada to fish cannot possess or transport any bait, alive or dead.  Most are using jigs / plastics, artificial crawlers on spinners and crankbaits with great success.  If desired, live bait is available and can be purchased for the day just over the border via boat in Canada, check with your resort for details. This entire area is great for multispecies action.  In addition to walleyes, big pike, smallmouth bass, jumbo perch, crappies, and muskies are also being caught on a regular basis.

Fishing for Walleyes slow. Panfish are going good however.  Lots of junk floating around the lake be careful. Pontooners give the fishing boats a wide birth.

Thanks to all that have shared reports.   Please post water temps and general area of the lake from the weekend and throughout this week.  I am heading up this weekend and water temp will play a role in our tactics.  Thanks!

Great idea! Filming your hunts and watching the footage during the offseason is a fantastic way to stay connected to your passion. YouTube offers a wealth of non-professional hunting videos filled with tips and inspiration. Your friend's camera stands for shallow water hunting sound impressive! It's a clever way to capture memorable moments. Enjoy your hunts and happy filming!

Fished for about 4-5 hours this weekend with the kids, all time in Big Bay. Had a mix of rainbows and pike suckers for bait. Rainbows out-fished pike suckers, and the small rainbows were bringing in fish. Caught about 12-14 fish, kept 8 for a fish fry. Biggest was 16". Limited sample says action seemed better in the morning than evening. Working 16-18' in the morning was our best run. Evening was slow. Didn't get to too many places, hit four reliable spots and caught fish in 3 outta 4.

I generally found 65 degrees in Black Bay, and 60-62 degrees in main areas of the west end. Ideal swimming temps in my opinion, where you jump in and notice the cool and then it feels great after you swim around a bit.
