Are you guys still catching cats or are you so quiet because you've run into that mother lode of walleyes?

We are hididng out in shame! grin.gifThe walleye bite has been tough this year.Dark and I fished below the Granite falls dam on sunday. We caught a lot of walleyes, but we were lucky if they went 4 to a lb.Just before dark we did get into some decent fish but it only lasted about half an hour.Dark got one that went 22" and I got one that was 21 and a couple eater size. This spot should have been producing lots of nice eyes.
Tonite I fished the Chaska creek mouth on my way home from work and picked up only one white bass.Maybee I will hit that spot on the way to work in the morning.
This weekend I believe we may try the St.Peter area.I will also be checking my favorite haunts close to home.(Shakopee to Jordan area)
Ever in search of a hot bite!

Hey fishhead, do you ever fish the riv north- west of Belle Plaine? It's the area north of the sewage ponds. Sharp bend with what looks almost like a natural wing dam. I haven't fished it (open water) for at least 5 years but I usually get down there a couple times during the winter (except for last year, we couldn't get on) and do pretty good.

I don't think I have fished that area.Maybee I should check it out.I have yet to ice fish the river(bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to ice and rivers)but I may be giving it a try this year if Dark will hold my hand grin.gif
Got any tips and tactics for fishing it through the ice?

I also had the luxury of being a mister mom about 15 years ago.It lasted a little more than a summer.I went fishing with my daughter every day on Lake Riley.Work has a way of interfearing with a guys lifestyle!
Any way give me a call in the morning when you have had your coffee.I might walk down at sun up to make a few casts from shore.Down river sounds good. They must be down there we have checked every where else!

Has anyone else been fishing the MN?Would be nice to know that you are not having any luck either smile.gif

FIshhead and Dark30,

If you get the opportunity and your jonesing for some walleyes, I really got into them last night on the Vermillion river near HAstings! My buddy had a real sow on that he lost. He's only been walleye fihsing once or twice, drag to tight etc etc. The largest we ended up with was a 4 pounder!
There was a little feeder coming in with a tonof baitfish getting smashed by the walldogs!
We were pulling them out of up to a foot of water!!!!

Sure is fun fishing for walldads with this fine weather eh?

No need to apologize!! The daddios were concentrated at the mouth of an in-flow from a backwater lake! Minnows and baitfish galore, being chased, running for their lives. We were pitching 1/16 oz. jigs tipped with a fathead into very shallow water at low light!
So shallow that when you missed a fish, you would have to dodge your jig as it came flying out of the water!
I would let the jig make contact with the bottom, reel in my slack, then slowly lift my rod tip! I would repeat this all of the way back to the canoe! They would grab it, usually on the first or second lift of my rod!
The weekend earlier, all we caught were cigars! We were using 1/8 oz jigs.
However, there was a lot more fish activity near shore and the surface this time!
I'm hoping to get back there next weekend!!

What a blast! We were all by ourselves as well!

Keep the rods bendin'!!!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
