I run on Ch. 23 most of the time, my buddies and I always run 23 on Mille Lacs and Leech.

I know Mille Lacs lake isn't a great lakes port. But a VHF radio is not a CB radio. The channels open to public correspondence are #'s 24,25,26,27,28,84,85,86,and 87. Others open for non-commercial use are #'s 68,69,70,72 and 78. I would suggest channel #69. It seems to be an easy one to remember. wink.gif

With everything else that's happened since Sept 11, I suspect the feds are watching marine radio use. Be careful with your transmissions and channel use, especially if you are operating (as many do) without an FCC radio station license. On the Great Lakes most anglers are pretty good, but I've noticed it can get sloppy (shades of CBs) on inland water.

To make a point, the FCC really slapped heavy fines on a couple walleye tournament pros a few years ago. And, the fines can be excessive. If you use 9 or 16 to reach someone, be sure to use your station call numbers -- otherwise, sit on an open channel and monitor or respond, but respond only briefly. Be especially careful if you are using hand-held (a no-no if you transmit from shore).

Clay/ my manual in my new Raytheon says a license is not needed on any "inland waters" and it lists the channels for generally communications with no restrictions. It also says call station numbers are only needed on coastal waters.

Do you really have to have them licenced on inland waters like mille lacs?
Thanks Willie ><(((>

If no license is required, then that's a fairly new change in the regs.

I got my first license when the fee was $30. It went up in increments to $115. It was repealed, but license still required, as well as use restrictions. Maybe it no longer matters, but I have seen situations in which folks have been heavily fined for casual use -- not to mention the very steep fines for false May Day transmissions.

I use mine mostly on Lake Michigan, but there the call numbers and restricted channels are widely adhered to. I would still be careful on inland water.

When I got my radio four years ago to use on Lake Michigan my manual also led me to believe that a license was no longer needed. Not wanting to chance a hefty fine I called the FCC in D.C. to clarify the law. As long as your aren't operating from a foreign port in U.S. waters a license is absolutely not required. But, if you are staying at a Canadian resort and then crossing back in to U.S. waters it is considered operating from a foreign port. Unless things have changed since then a license is not needed. If you use channel 16 for anything other than an emergency you are broadcasting illegally. The Coast Guard is always kind enough to point that out to people on Michigan that use the channel incorrectly. You are still free to use channel 9 to hail people for any reason but are expected to move to another channel to continue your conversation.
Channel 69 sounds like a plan. I'll be tuned in on Sat, Sun & Mon. Catch lots everyone.

Just as Ch 16 has been restricted to emergency and hailing, Ch 9 has been added for the same purpose.

FCC fines can be steep, and there are many instances where regs have been strictly enforced on inland waters. Be careful.

A marine radio is the best safety item you can have aboard.

Clayton,

As of three years ago channel 16 is for emergency only. Hailing is not allowed on 16.
Channel 9 is the channel that should be used for hailing.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
