Otsego WMA-Rice lake

Recommended Posts

I saw this on the dnr rec compass, went for a drive looking for it, but could not find it. The way it looked on the rec compass, I thought it would be easy but it wasn't.

Has anyone been to this WMA? If so, could you help me with the directions?

Thanks in advance

Ole

You won't be hunting that spot very long before the CO, or Wright County Sheriff shows up. It is against city ordinance to hunt/discharge a firearm in the eastern part of the city. That land is in close proximity to new developments that are going in, so complaints will get called in.Any questions- call Otsego City Hall, or the Wright County Sheriff's Office. And yes, I do live in that area, but not where the WMA is.

I wouldn't have hunted it if that's the case. Not all WMA's are open to public hunting and I do know that, but thank you for the info.

If you go into the recreation compass and click on info then click on the rice lake wma it says you can still hunt it. That info might be old but i would be suprised if you couldent hunt that wma, i hunt another spot only about 3 miles away and its legal.

Thanks Roosterslayer,

I should have known better than to just listen to someone and not talk to the CO, I'll call the local CO and find out for sure. If you can hunt in the WMA, I'll have to go check it out just because huskydevil is telling people to stay away.

I think I know the spot you are hunting, have you been duck hunting there?

Thanks again

Ole

I can not remember the starting dates on those years but Brent would know! Cliff

Like they say down in Loosiana, you pinch tail and suck the head.   And when they eat them, looks like they dump a bucket full on some newspaper on a picnic table and have at them.    But they still hadn't made it all the way west as of last summer, and I figure getting stopped with a cooler full of rusties heading home from the east wouldn't look good on my permanent record.... One of these years though.   I hear they are west of oak narrows now.

Yes, had it on wife's iphone when that was the only smartphone in the family.   I think I would have to have one of the huge phablets to be able to see anything but I am old and don't see that well anymore, when it comes to fine detail.   But good you mentioned it since I had forgotten about it.

some of the lake access areas might be interesting to navigate thru ad DNR is prepping the public landings

That is a hearty fish.  I guess that is the benefit of the late winter

Thanks for your updates Cliff . Out of curiosity , if this date holds true of Monday April 30th for the start of this years event , would you happen to know how this date sits with past late ice out years , for instance 1996 , 2013 ?

Thanks Cliff for the update, and thanks Brett for the info too!

You can fish a little meat out of the ones with really big claws. Tails are easy once you get the hang of it. Meat pops right out then just pull the intestine(?) and you're good to go.  I'd rather people use fish guts as crawfish bait rather than throwing them in the woods for my dog to find
