Benelli/Stoeger 4th shell

HUSKIN FORA MUSK

Recommended Posts

To all,

Has anyone noticed that a fourth shell can be shot through a benelli or stoeger shotgun with the correct 2 shell magazine plug installed? If you insert two into the magazine as normal, one in the chamber, and lay one in the carrier, all four can be shot. Are these guns legal in Minnesota, or will a longer plug need to be installed to limit the magazine to one shell? Any advice, comments, or specifics would be muc appreciated.

I won't prolly put in a longer plug cuz I got nailed with a fine last year for that reason. wasn't using three shells but the plug thing that they use just goes a touch to far so I got a ticket mad.gif

I heard that the newer benelli's have had a modification to prevent the 4th shell.

Set the Drag-- Did the CO use that plastic stick thing to push up in the mag tube to measure? Now I'll have to go home and see how many 2 3/4 shells fit. I know at some point in time you could get 2 1/2 inch shells but I haven't seen them comercially. Does anyone know the length of the measureing device that they use?

I had a Federal Warden use the plastic thingy on my BPS 10 gauge one year. He said my plug was too short.

I gave him three shells and asked him to see if he could get three in the magazine. He could not, and handed me back my gun with a grin. No ticket issued. He wished me a good hunt and went on his way.

Believe it or not, it was a warden who first pointed out the Benelli-4-round problem to a guy in our hunting party. Was very nice about it. He wasn't in the field so the tip probably saved him a ticket. Apparently LOTS of people are aware of this and it has been a problem. Comes down to knowing your equiptment.

I can fit 4 in mine with the plug, but the newer ones do have a modification so you can't pull this off. I believe in 2000 or 2001 they made the change.

I don't know about Stoeger or the newer Benellis, but I've seen guys with the older ones able to get 4 in the gun. One of them was questioned in the field as the CO was trying to trick him into showing him how to load the 4th shell. After 5 minutes of constantly loading 3 and trying to get the 4th into the magazine, which obviously wouldn't fit, the CO left him alone figuring he either wasn't going to bite or truly didn't know what he was talking about. He didn't get him to bite, as my buddy knew exactly what he was trying to bait him into but played dumb and didn't allow him to. So yes, you can do it with the older guns but don't ever admit that you even know how in the field.

I have not tried it with the plug but my 04 M2 only holds 3 in the mag without it so I'm pretty sure it will only hold 2 in mag with plug. Kind of a bummer. I'm use to having 5 total when hunting grouse, pheasant and crow.

I have one of the newer "fixed" versions of the SBE.. i can still get 4 shells in there it just takes a little fanagling.. i dont know for sure how legal it is, i know they cant make you use a plug to limit the magazine to 1 round.. i DO know that i have been checked by federal wardens multiple times and never had a problem so it must be all good grin.gif

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
