I went out to carlos avery yesterday morning, had about 80 ducks get up 10 minutes before shooting time. Only one duck came into the decoys after that and I missed it. We sat until about 9:00 and ended up with a skunk.

Hunted Pelican lake (Buffalo area) last night and didn't see one duck until after sunset. It was a very slow day yesterday, I think I'll bowhunt the rest of the week and go for pheasant this weekend.

Good luck everyone

Ole

I'm a sophomore at SCSU this year. Where did you go to high school?

Hey Everyone,
Our hunting has been fair this year. On opening weekend we shot 4 ducks saturday, and 24 ducks and 8 geese on sunday for 5 guys. The following weekend 2nd and 3rd, on Saturday we shot about a dozen ducks and 7 geese on Saturday, and just a few on sunday. We saw good sized flocks of mallards comin through and few good sized flock of divers. On the 10th, yesturday we shot just 13 ducks, but got 2 Canvasbacks. Our first Cans ever up there. Mostly we killed widgeon and mallards, with a few gadwall, green/blue wingers, and a fair amount of woodro's(wood ducks). Typically we get a lot of ringnecks and mallards but have yet to get one ringneck. A bunch of us are headin up Thursday through sunday this week and hopefully gonna wack some mallards and divers. I think we've found a decent spot. We have some private land but, are trying different areas to try to get some different actoin. Its paid off, before we'd maybe shot 2 or 3 geese during the regular season on water, now its much better. Theres definitely lots a geese around, hopefully they'll stay till the late season goose hunt!
I think too that this or next weekend should be pretty good, ice cold weather and blue skies. At least thats the best for us up there. We get divers in the early mornin, mallards and geese around 9:30.

We killed over 40 ducks this weekend. Mix bag of teal, wigeon, gaddy's, mallards, woody's and a pintail. Our blue wingers seemed to have left the area as we shot 1 on sat and then they all magically turned into greenwings on Sun. and Mon.

We were hunting E. SD.

Mike, nice to hear from you. The corn is just getting started around town. By the end of next week we should be hammering pretty hard. Been spending my time east of town about 15 miles in a flooded corn field. Getting enough ducks to keep going back. Hoping this front will push some birds down for us. Gimme a hollar if you get back to town this fall. Flip

Went out again tonight and saw nothing. Only got to be in the field for the last half hour of shooting and it was worthless.

I'm in a WPA that doens't seem to attract anything that migrates. I saw plenty of pheasants though.

I don't want any honey holes, but man I would love to hear some suggestions for spots near the SW metro. I hunt alone and I'm starting to get frustrated.

ATM, I might go wed night. Depends on how windy it is.Are you looking for company?

Flowage tamer and myself had to work for our ducks this weekend...ended up with one drake mallard on friday morning while hunting the river. Then headed west for the weekend and got 2 woodies, 2 bwt, and a drake mallard on saturday. Sunday morning ended up with 3 mallards. This weekend should prove much better for hunting...cold weather moving in will help the ducks and geese...also hoping to flush a few roosters.

Good luck all,

Myself, 2 sons, and neighbor played our part in making sure the duck population doesn't get any smaller over the weekend.

SW MN, near Hadley. 4 people, 2 mallards and 1 teal. However, it's gonna snow hard this winter with all the holes we shot in the sky.

Hey Sartell Angler,

Did you go to high school in Sartell? I grew up in St Cloud and knew a few people from Sartell.

Powerstroke, where are you looking to hunt in SW metro?
I have a few spots I could help you out with possibly.
I will be doing some field hunting as soon as they pull the corn. The place butts right up to a lake which I have a private access to. Are you looking for ducks or geese? or both?
Here is my e-mail [email protected]
Let me know where you are willing to go to.

joshb/bigshooter:

yeah, its funny how a lot of the same people are on all the hunting sites. I frequent this one, the 'fuge, and also the field reports for MN on Waterfowler.com. The corn is starting to get cut and we have a good field lined up for thursday night. Hunting in the area all weekend...send me a pm on the 'fuge if you wanna talk hunting / maybe get together for a goose hunt sometime.

Well we hunted the south metro today. The birds were a flying. Got out there it was nice warm, dry, and no wind. As soon as shooting time started it got nasty smile.gif only guys on the place without a robo duck so no ducks for us but did manage two geese. Talked to another group at the launch and managed to get 6 mixed bag of two pintails (there were two guys) a widgen, gadwall, malards and a teal. Got my stuff in the dryer now gonna take a quick power nap and hit it again.

BTW does anyone hunt around the waconia area? I was thinking about trying parley or goose or any one of the lakes out there?

I've tried hunting west of Waconia with absolutely no luck whatsoever. The places I've checked never seem to hold ducks. I've seen an average amount of geese though.

Is Parley Lake open for waterfowling? I know Carver Park Reserve and any other Three rivers park district land is closed to hunting.

The pup (1 year old male out of CreekRobber AKA: Auggie) and I went out this afternoon around Moorhead/Hawley area and shot 4 greenheads in about a hour and a half. ...We had to get out of the house cause my wife is pregnant and my female lab just had pups; too many female hormones in the house.

Looks like some of the northern Mallards might be down this way.

Was out this morning (north metro) and didn't get a shot. Saw a few but they were probably locals.

Went out in the SW metro again... Didn't see much... 4 came in but they were too far away to get a shot... A few mins after shooting was over a lone honker flew right over us, would have been a perfect shot... Guess I will not go back until some of the northern birds get down this way, which will be soon from what I have heard...

I just moved to Waconia a few weeks ago, and I have nowhere to hunt at all. My dad has the boat up north for the rest of the year, and now I'm stuck about an hour from where most of my friends live (apple valley). If anyone in the Waconia or west metro could use a hunting partner, give me a shout. I've looked for public land to hunt out here, but there is nothing unless you have a boat or a farmer will give you access, which I've been told is a near impossiblility around these parts. Any suggestions guy?
I can be reached at [email protected] Thanks guys!

Me and a friend hunted the North Metro after school on thursday. Some ducks have moved down with the front. We saw allot more mallerds and ringers. We ended up shooting half a box apiece and geting 0 ducks. My buddy cant hit anything ever, im usually a decent shot but had a bad day! Best hunting iv had all year.

hit up the river this morning expecting some migrant birds to be around...kicked up a group of about 100 ducks while motoring to my spot....put out a big spread and waited. Had 20 mallards lock on our spread right at shooting time...3 peeled off and gave a good look...one drake came in range and I dropped it with one shot. Had another mallard come by a little later...I proceeded to drop it with one shot. Had 3 hunting buddies along and when 2 woodies came in I just let them shoot...they missed them both...guess I should of shot. No other ducks sighted...**** poor hunting the river...going west tomorrow possibly.

Rundown:
me- 2 shots, 2 mallards
3 other buddies- 10 shots, no dux,
1 crow

Didn't have to work last Weds...it was a perfectly crappy day for ducks...windy and rain....cool. Drove up to Pine City and fished a swampy area in Chengwitona State forest and did pretty good....for me. I havn't duck hunted since 1991 and didn't know what I was doing then either. This year bought some decoys..and a mallard call. Listened to one "how to call" CD and that was it. Standing in the cattails...I managed to call in my first mallard. I was very pumped...the flocked circled my three times before coming into my little spread. Only managed one nice drake...my gun jammed...been doing that lately, wont eject the spent shell sometimes..any fixes for that? Two more nice mallard flocks came in, got them to circle me a couple times but wouldn't commit. There always seemed to be a small flock of ringnecks right behind them and they would buzz the decoys. Wow are they fast...managed two..a drake and hen. it was a great way to spend the morning/early afternoon. Might try to get back up there this week if I have another unexpected day off. I'm usually solo..so If anyone else has some waders and has nothing else to do...let's get R dun.

Finally got out to do some waterfowling.

Saturday morning. NW Minnesota. Cold. Windy. Overcast. What would seem like a good day but not much for activity. Had 3 Ringbills, 2 Gadwalls, a loner Ringbill, and another 2 Ringbills pull into the decoys. Ended up with 2 of the Ringbills (both nice drakes) and one of the Gadwalls (another nice drake). Should have had another 3 of the Ringbills but what do you do, can't hit them all.

Sunday, I had my ice shack project to work on so we skipped the shooting in the morning and tried to get as much done on the house as possible. Well, the lake our cabin is on had a good 5-6 dozen ducks sitting on it when we got out there. Half Mallards/ Half Divers. Lots of geese were moving on Sunday also.

Going to give the same area a shot next weekend.

Just returned from hunting the last five days from duck camp on Marsh Lake. Weather seemed excellent for a good push, and some northern birds definitely trickeled in, but not the numbers.

We bagged mallards, teal, gadwalls, bufflehead, redheads and bluebills. I got my first drake greater scaup that's adding to my stuffed collection. smile.gif

Wednesday was dead, high winds. Thursday was better, got a few ducks. Friday we saw the first migrations with bluebills, Cans and redheads. Saturday even better with mallards, gadwalls and bills. Yesterday was a bust. Our group saw 1 duck that was about 1/2 mile away. Dead calm, cloudy and really chilly.

We got lucky, it seemed both our locations produced the most shooting Friday and Saturday despite the heavy concentration of hunters and primo duck hunting locations were filled by 5am. Unreal.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
