Lets hear about the biggest perch from MLL

O.K. hopefully no b.s.ers read this, but I'm just curious about the maximum size jumbo perch reach on Mille Lacs. Noted historian Joe Fellegy told me many times that legetimate 14"ers are very uncommon to the lake. I think he said that he has only seen a handful. My personal best is on my wall right above my PC. It is a 13 3/4" that weighe 1'10 oz. It is in a collage of five that range from 12 1/2", 1'5 oz. to another 13 1/2" that weighed 1'10 oz. Just curious if any of you fellas have caught any legit. hogs.

Well I did catch a legitimate 14" last year in Feb, this was before I knew how rare a 14" on Mille Lacs was. This is the only one I caught at the time, and didn't want to mount just one,...so it saw the frying pan. I don't own a scale so it never got weighed.

I still kick myself to this day for not mounting that fish. And all I have is a crappy picture of it (too much sunlight in the photo so it is really blurred!)

Maybe next time!

I caught a 14 1/8 inch jumbo slip bobber fishing on mille lacs last june. It looked ugly it had a hump on its head and what looked like green moss on it! That has been the biggest perch I have ever seen caught.
1/8 oz jig and jumbo leech, were fishin south side of 3 mile.

The biggest one's I have seen have been 13.25", I caught one that size 4,5 years ago and my dad caught one that size last year. 13" and bigger are giants.

I caught a 14.25 incher early this year. It weighed about 2 pounds. I also caught a few more than ranged from 12-13.5 inches. I am having a group of 4 mounted right now. Here is a few pictures of some of the fish.

Those pictures are awesome, too bad I don't have a scanner. Everybody who has a scanner should do that, or maybe you could do it with a digital camera. Then we could see some of these "200"...."Fish" weekends ice fishing that some of these guys are having. Then we'll find out if they're dreaming while typing or not.

It might be kind of difficult to photographically document a 200 fish weekend grin.gif either they'd have to post 200 pictures or be the biggest, dumbest poachers ever and pile them up on the ice for one nice snap shot wink.gif

Nice perch Matt!!!

my biggest perch was 14inch monster that I caught last year on 8 mile. Me and a buddy caught 10 perch from 12-14 inches in about a hour. Have only caught 1 perch over 12 this year couldn't seem to get away from the eyes this year' of course no 200 fish day but a few in the teens. The best fishing I've had ice fishing.I have a picture but no scanner to show you guys. Matt thats a few pictures I've seen you must be one hell of a fishermen.

My biggest was a 14 incher that I caught this year. I didn't catch hardly any perch this year but I did get that one. I have however seen plenty of 14 inchers caught. We caught two perchin on Mille Lacs one day last year and then probably a half a dozen on another lake that we perch on. The biggest one I've seen though was caught by my buddies dad. I think it was 15 1/2 or sixteen inches. They still have it in the freezer. It was as long as a case of beer.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. It goes to show that true 14" giants are a rarity.
I should have mentioned in the first post about the best perch day I ever had. It was about 6-7 years on the west side of the 8 Mile Flat. Me and a colleague brought home 90 perch that ranged from 11"-13.5". We let go another 100 fish from 9"-13". It was a phenomenal afternoon. I was throwing down BEAR lead-head jigs just to see if they would take it, yes they did. In fact they bit on every single presentation I tried. My hands hurt for a week from catching and cleaning all them fish. For the record, that was the only time I ever kept that many fish of any species. It was the end of the year and I just wanted to have a few meals worth.
MJ5- Them were some awesome pictures. Way to put your money where your mouth is and show some hogs.

I know you can't take a picture of every fish but sometimes people have to be truthful about the # of fish they catch. It helps other people plan trips and know where to fish.

We got first place at Dickies this weekend with one that weighed 1.44, just slightly under a pound and a half I believe. 14 and a quarter inches long. Looked huge!

I came up when it was hot (mid 80's) and unfortunately it has stayed that way the whole trip.  I knew I was doomed when Pike Bay was over 82 degrees, and Big Bay was well in the mid 70's.  Skies have been blue, and with little wind to break up the water.  I got up around 5 am, and stayed on the lake until 10 or so.  I didn't want to get sick, this is supposed to be fun afterall, and I came back on after 4 pm.  I trolled trying to find them.  I was successful, but only got enough to get some fish fry's for the family.  The bigger ones came from lead core, with an occasional one coming in from trolling shallow.  DNR stopped by while on the lake, and he said the mayfly hatch might be starting.  Good luck everybody!

Question for this knowledgeable group   I've noticed over the past two weeks at the lake that in certain areas there seems to be a ton of black "duck-like" floaters that seem to congregate by tons and stir up the water and then move to another area close by, stir up the water again and move again. I've seen them recently in Greenwood Bay and around Fectos.   Are these cormorants? Are they stirring up the water by fishing?   Thanks

Followed the advice I posted, slip bobbers w rainbows and crawlers in big bay on a dozen humps topping out at 6 to 12'. Caught a few smalles and a couple 12" walleyes. So not very successful but maybe didn't hit the right humps or lake was too calm or wrong time of day - 7:30 11 am. That's why they call it fishin'

I may have to take you up on that. I've been moving for a month and don't even have my boat in the lake yet!

Walleye Report:  Just spent a week on the lake (East end).  The fishing was as hot as the weather with many, many 14-25" walleyes.   Surface Temps: Consistently 70-72 with the recent hot weather.  Swimming was comfortable the past three days.  Depths:  All caught in less than 10 FOW Techniques: Lures - Plastics and jerkbaits.  We bought two dozen leeches but never opened them.  I do regret not watching a bobber dip below the surface.   Tactics: Cast and retrieve lures in sandy bays, over main lake/secondary rocky points, across rocky flats, between sandy flats, and throughout silt/mud bays with shallow weeds.  A little wind and clouds helped but was not always necessary.  And we had lots of random fish.    Advice:  Get out there and fish.  These patterns should hold for the next week-two.  The fish are aggressively feeding in the shallows where they are finding crawfish, shiners, etc.  A fast moving bait is getting hammered.  I literally can't tell you how many times I saw fish INHALE our presentations at the boat.   The population is healthy.  Catch and keep a few and let a bunch of them go.     Good luck.

Lol, if they had enough enforcement in the first place. They may catch them the rest of the season without the tag!
