This past weekend I measured three inches of ice in the north end of Blue, but there was still open water further out on the lake. This evening when I drove to the north boat ramp there, I saw two portables out on the ice. Anybody have any input on the ice thickness there. I don't get home in the evenings early enough to walk out there checking ice. Sure would be nice to sneak my fish house out there this weekend.

Fished Blue Lake this evening. Marked a good bit of fish on the Vex, but failed to put anything on ice. There's 4 1/2 inches of ice for about 100 yards off of the north boat ramp and it tapers from there. Talked to some guys that landed a few crappies, but nothing really on fire in these part. Towed my fish house down and set it just off the ramp. All fired up and ready for the thicker ice, till then, just a good place to run to and warm up.

Fished Blue this afternoon. Got one nice Northern west of the north boat ramp in five foot of water. Other than that it seems to be a bit slow from the people I talk to. I get enough action on the Vex to keep me out there, but fail to put anything on the ice. The cold weather this week should make it to where we can get further out.

I was out there also, fished a couple hundred yards from the north acess in 13ft. Did pretty good on the crappies and sunnies, nothing big but got enough keepers for a good meal. There was 4-5 inches of ice where
I was, felt good to be on the ice again!

Was there a time that they were biting or just off and on while you were out.? I'd see em on the Vex but just couldn't get one to bite.

I got out there about 2 and got a few seemed to be best between 3:30 and 4:30. Always had fish on the vex but it seemed like it took alot of finesse em to get em to bite.Had my best luck on a plain glow tear drop with waxies didn't have any minnows.
Good luck, Eric

Thanks for the input. I plan on going out Wednesday evening for a bit, so I'll try again then. Hopefully by the weekend the ice will be thick enough that I can drag my house away from the shore and out over the hole.

Blue is slightly stained water 2-3 feet visabilty. found it a waste of time with the camera. If it is real sunnythey work ok. I find my FL18 AN FL8 WORKS MUCH BETTER and less hassel!

There was one shelter on the point yesterday, and another farther southwest than that. I believe they put in at the East ramp. See you there Saturday.

Six + inches of ice on Blue as of this evening. Drug my fish house out just north of the point with my four wheeler. Couple of portables setup in the same area. Twenty foot of water. May be a bit too deep this early, but we'll give it a shot. I stayed out there till six, and as I was packing it in, there were fish showing on the flasher. Try again tomorrow.

Fished Blue this afternoon. 8 inches of ice on the lake. Lot more houses out there than a week ago. Saw one towed out by a Jeep even. Pretty crazy, but it worked. Caught three walleye, some sunnies, perch, and one crappie. The bite seems to be around 5 or 6PM. Good bit of fish on the flasher that look at the baits, and just don't seem to want to bite.

I am thinking about trying Blue Lake on Friday afternoon / evening. As I have never fished it before, any suggestions would be appreciated. How is the crappie bite? As I will be getting out shortly before dark, I will probably target crappies and eyes. Thanks for any help offered! Have a great season and a very Merry Christmas!

Fished Blue last Sunday 14th and caught a nice walleye 27 inches very fat and 2 small crappies. I was fishing the north side out from the point in 24 feet of water. Marked the walleye at 15 feet. Thought it was a crappie turned out much better.

Way to go Seven.....I had some guys up last weekend and fished that same area. Took a bit of heat cause we got skunked, but I know there are plenty of fish to be caught there. Be there this weekend.

Thanks for the info! I am still shooting for Friday, but may not make it until Saturday or Sunday. If you see a Frabill XL Twin and a maroon Yamaha sled, stop over. That'll be me. BTW - how thick was the ice?

Seven, Why don't you just give everyone the GPS coordinates too. What color jig were you using? How did you glow the jig? What size line? What color line?

Okay Seven I will try to "remeber" to use that Woopie jig correctly next time. Have you bought anymore from Sportsmans? Those things are sweeeeeet. I love the action the Whoopie puts out.

Muskiejoe and Seven - how close to the drop off on the point were you? Did you try any tip ups in the shallows?

Just got in off Blue. Was there from 200 to 730. Moved the shack out deep and caught crappies the whole time. Seemed like the afternoon bite was best, and slowed towards 700. Though I was set deep, the crappies were hanging in the 20 foot range. Real good time, be there Saturday for sure.

On Blue this afternoon. 200 to 500PM, same crappie action. Pulled a limit and headed home. They're not hitting really hard, but you can tease them up out of the school for a bite. The ole lady even got in on the action..!! Ice is 11"

Another great afternoon on Blue. Pulled 20 or so crappies out of the hole. Same place, same depth, same same. They're not hitting the bait really hard, so you've GOT to have a spring bobber on if you want to catch these fish.

Yes, you do a fair bit of sorting. I've yet to pull a walleye from that spot. Had a few small ones before I went deep. I haven't been out there late enough in the evening I believe. Feel free to stop by and say hello if you see the house open. I usually get out there Fri, Sat, Sun, and sometimes during the week. I'm off till after new years, so I'll probably be out there a good bit this week.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
