Sorry Cory I didn't make it, some friends wanted to do a pheasant hunt today and again tomorrow(last weekend of the season). I was a little hesitant though, in the morning my lake, Alexis, was white and a few hours later it was very black. My ATV weighs in at over 600 lbs and with me and my gear, we're pushing 900 to a 1000 lbs. so I didn't feel too comfortable about takin it out(call me chicken). Worked on the fish house though for a while and hope things will change this week, weather-wise, it's still on the trailer and ready to go, and it's still early!
P.S. Rush Point Store's got a hot new colored jig, never saw anything like it before, kinda pink, kinda skin-tone?, and holds the glow longer, had to buy some!

Hey Rush pointer!

AS of Tuesday, you would have had no problem getting your shack out! I will go out tonight and check for ya, see what the rain did! As we talked about, you are more than welcome to put your shack at my place if you want.

Thanks Cory, appreciate it. Am starting to get bored and have a couple of long weekends coming up soon so I would appreciate an ice update to see if I can perhaps pull it out again on Sunday or Monday???????

Snowmobile through the ice this morning, still at the bottom of West Rush down by Crane, along with the portable he was towing. Driver ok, made it out. Car through on the ramp by CJs, but still ice of around 7 inches out by the public access...just go to be careful where you go!

Snowmobile through by Crane? WOW! Last night we were by there and there is lots of ice! Is this rumor, or fact?
You hear lots of rumors of vehicles going through, one thats floating around this year is a car went down by cigar island, and the needed a helicopter to pull it out!

Verified with the Sheriffs Department, and with the neighbors who watched it all! My house is directly across the lake from the point...Cory, you know the point that always freezes up last, pointing toward Grass Island? The only thing through the ice at Cigar was the corner of a permanent house, placed on a shallow 6-1/2 inches...he just pulled that one over to deeper ice...

Cory! Off the Rush Point Store Website!

December 19th, about 10 pm......Hate to keep up the ice warning stuff,,but....snowmobile through the ice today East of Crane Island, towing a portable. Guy made it out ok according to the sheriff..**** lucky...deep water over in that area. Car went in near the ramp by the bar, just the front end as he went to park on the ice to watch motorcycles. Two atvs through near the narrows....yet I keep hearing there is 7-1.2 inches out by the public access! Go figure! Had at least a dozen fishermen out by Cigar today, all said the ice was good, but sloppy. At least and inch of water sitting on top. Forecast is for flurries here tomorrow, low around 30 or so, high of 33 tomorrow..Lets hope for some fast, freezing weather. The Chisago County Dispatcher for the Sheriffs Department told us that they have requested that the DNR post all area lakes for walking, no vehicular traffic warnings.

Time or date wrong? But that cold bath would play he11 with a guys Viagra!

Hey Dave!

My truck is parked safely over the crappie hole by Crane Island!

FYI: I called John at CJ's, and he knows of no reports of a snowmobile going through the ice by Crane Island.

As a way to try and keep fish house breakins down on Rush Lake, I will be patrolling the lake nightly, so if you want me to check on your ice shack or cabin, give me a description and location, and I will keep an eye on it!

Maybe Johns at CJS should have a better relationship with the Sheriff! The DNR and Sheriffs department like to get that kind of news out quick, so they don't have to endanger themselves going after fall ins..makes Christmas hell for their families too! Of course, I am speaking from having family members who need to go out on these rescues...

Just checked out the public access on West Rush, still 8 inches at 5:00 Thursday night, light snow falling. No postings up for traffic at this access at least. Hopefully this cold snap keeps up!

Assuming there's still good ice here, are you catching any fish? I was up for the FM get-together last Saturday, enjoyed fishing there, and was planning on a return trip this afternoon. Also, I thought I noticed some bait shops in the area, but which ones would have better supplies and information? Thanks in advance.

Paul,

I will be out there for most of the day. Stop by. Purple otter and the limping green wheeler. As for bait shops. You can get bait at the Rush point store about three miles south of the PA. You can get bait at the Holiday at the Rush City exit on 35 or you can get bait on the north end of Rush just off of County 2. You will see a big sign saying live bait. He is a bait wholesaler and you get great bait at very good prices.

Two answer your questions, yes there is still good ice, and yes, we are getting some walleyes and there is a good crappie bite going now. With the way the weather is here today it should go all day.

Crappie bite is good, deep..and so is the ice! Rush Point Store has a website under the same name with daily updates on ice and fishing reports..lots of tackle and fresh bait..

Pwaldow123, I didn't make it up that way Sat. Had some logistical difficulties, ended up at Minnetonka instead. Not much luck there at all. I'm hoping to get back up that way Wed. or Thurs. or something though, so thanks for the info. Did you have any luck Sat? By the way, how many times did Cory have to come out and help you start that limping 4-wheeler? wink.gif

Is there a hot bite time for them crappies?

I was up there Saturday evening and allthough I was impressed with the consistent size it seemed they had lock jaw.

I was marking fish constantly but it took me 5 hours to catch 14 fish, 11 were 9 inches plus.

Hey Metro Joe!

No real "Magical time" for the crappies, what I would suggest is moving alot! If you mark fish and they aren't cooperating move until you find active ones! I will be out this afternoon if anyone wants to go!

Took the kids out Sunday for some panfish action but the sunfish wouldn't cooperate.

I don't remember having this much trouble finding sunfish last winter.

How many places are there to access the lake?

Hope this isn't a repeat(got and error message before) Rush has two accesses, one on West three miles north of the Rush Point Store, the other is on East, about three miles west of the Rush City exit off 35W. Both Petersons on East(about a mile and a half before the public access) and CJ's(two miles north of Rush Point Store on Cty 4) have accesses also.

Hey Mark!

I will be out in the am, I have relatives coming over in the afternoon....It sounds like Captn Josh maybe making an appearance tomorrow as well!
They are starting to drive vehicles on both East and West Rush, but I wouldnt reccomend it, there are spots with 11-12 inches and spots with 7 and lots of wierd pressure ridges this year! Let me know if you guys are coming up and we will hook up!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
