Coach Dog,

I'll be heading up this weekend to fish Big Ole. I'm a little nervous, as I've heard the springs in the lake make for varying ice thickness. Never been out there past October. Does anyone know what to expect on a lake with a lot of springs???

last week Big Island had really nice Ice. It is also a spring fed lake, but I have never had any problems. There are places on that lake where I beleive there are large conentrations of springs. I tend not to go there, but with the cold weather this week Im sure it is perfectly safe.

Well, after open water fishing a lake for 20+ years, you figure you might be able to find some fish through the ice. Shows just what a different world it is up there in the winter. Still an amazing experience! It's like a frozen desert out there. It had a much different feel to it than ice fishing the river down in the southeast corner of the state.

Talking to the locals up there it sounds like Jack the Horse, Forest, and Little North Star are the crappie hot (I use that word losely) spots right now.

I have fished Big Ole a couple of times in the winter with very little success trying for the crappies. I know that they are in there but i couldnt find them.

The fishing was terrible this past weekend.
We fished Big Island In 12'-40' of water and only managed 2 crappies, 2 perch. One monster northern, Wich was the highlight of the weekend, she measuerd about 29" or so and very FAT. The biggest thing that I have pulled through the ice, that was fun. all fish came saturday afternoon. Friday we fished for about 10 hrs and only managed one bite. We did catch a heck of buzz, DEFINTLY A KEEPER.
