Fall Colors

The Grebe

Recommended Posts

Took a day trip on Saturday...my wife and I headed up to Duluth, to catch the Fall colors, visit the Glensheen Mansion and have lunch on the shores of Superior.

The colors were sporadic until north of Hinkley and then, although I thought they were a little muted, became more constant the further north we went.

It was kind of funny though...In some areas it looked like the leaves were dropping without reaching their full color potential?

The Aspens, Birch, Poplars, were not quite as vividly yellow as I have seen them in the past.

There are a couple of little lakes on the right of 35, south of Cloquet, that were just beautiful...Norman Rockwell would have loved it! The setting, the colors, the water, everything worked!

I don't know if it will get any better, or go down hill? Maybe our next jaunt will be toward Stillwater, over by the St. Croix, see whats shakin? Then work our way over toward the river bottoms to the south?

Next time you head up that way take hwy 23 to Duluth. I was up on the shore salmon fishing over the weekend and took 23 back from Duluth. It was well worth it. The colors were peaking close to Duluth, but as I got closer to Banning State Park the colors there was less and less color.

We got back from our cabin, north of Two Harbors, a week ago. During our week and a half stay we went to Ely looking for moose and to dropin on friends there. The colors were at peak on that tour. They were post-card perfect in many areas.

By contrast, I took Ma out to the deer stand last evening. The maples were just starting to turn and the walnuts and butternuts are getting pretty yellow as are the birch. Here in the SE we are still a long way off from peak. Saturday I was down along the Mississippi and things were still mostly green.

Grebe, I was out on the bike yesterday and went through the Taylors Falls area. Not much to look at, yet. Maybe by next weekend it will be more colorful

Living in Duluth and I can only say the best is yet to come as far as the North Shore goes, about one more week and we should hit peak. Its when you get about 5 miles away from the lake that everything is at peak or beyond right now.

If you want to take a weekend drive to view beautiful fall colors, I would highly recommend taking Highway #6. Go west towards Brainerd on Highway #18, then turn and go north on Highway #6 all the way up to Deer River. The colors this weekend should be spectacular!

On the way up towards Gooseberry to work today it was very apparent that we were almost or at peak, colors everywhere, Hawk Ridge in Duluth looked to be on fire. May be downhill after this weekend then finally some rest at work. Word to the wise, if you plan on coming up make sure you book a place to stay ahead of time. Last weekend I had three offers for people to sleep on my couch for money. Not a place to stay until Thunder Bay on the North Shore.

Huh you don't have to tell me about fall colors.....

I got married this past weekend at Itasca State park, and we hit the peak color change up there it was nothing short of amazing, I don't think the leaves stay around long so you really have to hit a leaf run just right, I don't know I've a seen more beautiful weekend ever.

Has anyone been by Taylor Falls this week and if so how are the colors? Taking the GF out tomorrow and was wondering about that area.

Thanks

I was out on the road for a few hours this A.M. and the colors are busting out all over the place!

The morning sun shining on the Yellow Ash leaves and the Crimson and Orange colored Maples, and the supporting array of fall colors, is stunning...I don't know what other word to use?

Some of the settings are so beautiful, you almost have to pull off the road! I know that it makes my heart glad I'm able to see something like this!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
