well guys i just found out the news 2 days ago and now it has set in, i have to be to ft.leonardwood by the 12th of sept. for 25 days of processing and stuff and then i dont know where i am gonna end up, and it says that it could be a max of 2yrs!! I cant believe that i am going, it was one of those deals that i just never thought that i would get called being i havent been in the actual reserves for a couple of years now, i went in to the irr and just kinda forgot about my commitment. I guess my biggest concern is my g-friend being a full time student having to pay all of our bills now and take care of everything w/out me! I guess its a good thing that i didnt go on my annual duckhunting spree this year and buy a bunch of stuff that i wont use for a while!! So i also guess i wont be pulling those bull gills through the ice this year either!!
Alright well i am done now, i just wanted to tell all of u guys and wish u all the best of the next few seasons coming up and appreciate every time u are out there!!!
I totally understand my commitment to serve this wonderful country and i raised my right hand and i am required to do whatever my country calls for!!!

god bless u all and try to save some for me for when i get back!!!

I was over in desert storm with a patriot missle unit. Was only there for 9 months but it sure was nice to receive items from home. I'll release a few gills for you this winter.

Canvasback,Even though my military service was a long time ago, I can still remember the empty, hollow feeling I got when I knew my buddies back home were going duck, pheasant, grouse, or deer hunting. I can not thank you enough for standing tall and doing what you swore you would do. It's MEN like you that make this country and this site great! If they would only take old farts like me, I would gladly go for you. NO B.S.!! I am proud of you and proud to be associated with you on FM!

WASSSIT, Was there as well. Were you
with 1/7 2/7 or 5/7 ADA. If so, I was your
Crypto support......

Canvas Kid, Wish you good luck and godspeed

It has been in the news a lot lately about
the pull-up of IRR for duty. Recruitment
for the regulars is now at an all time low.

Can.kid,

thank you so much for going but I know your heart is heavy. My friend did two trips to iraq and is now back. I do know that the military helps with keeping the bill collectors at bay while you are gone. Not sure if it holds true if you are ot married. maybe something to look in to.

good luck and be safe. The fish and birds will only be bigger when you get back to them.

CB, I fear for you, I pray for you, and I am proud of you, as all those who have posted before me are. I wish you a safe tour and hope you can make a difference in many lives while you are there. Remind those around you of the buddies you have and haven't even met. let them know we are proud of them too, and hoping they are back soon. And above all, thank you.

I don't pretend to know all the reasons why our "Best" people need to secure another man's country in order to protect our way of life here.
I do know this,...It is a hard and difficult thing you are doing on behalf of your country. I thank you for it. I hope "our" countrymen can learn to do at least a little better job of appreciating the sacrifices made by our men and women of uniform. I personally have a difficult time telling myself I deserve it. Come back safely to enjoy the land you love. God Bless-
Troy

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
