No Go Opener

Recommended Posts

JPZ,

I too am attending a wedding in Minneapolis this weekend. Would be a shame to run into a fellow FMer' on fishing opener at a wedding.

The wedding I'm going to is in Golden Valley.

I can't go.

I'm divorced and mothers day always used to fall on opener. With that said, my daughter was always with her mother.

Well, being that mothers day was last week, I have my daughter this week.

So, next weekend!

I was invited to go north, but then I was "un-invited" when they "forgot" they didn't have room in one of the cabins, or it had been rented out to some other folks, or some other "flimsy" excuse. rolleyes.gif Thanks guys!!! mad.gif I stopped listening to him back-peddle after he started whining about how many people were going... mad.gif

Oh well... Would have been fun but I'm not really into "bumper boats" anyway... I'll stay local and be out mid week after the crowd thins out.

To those of you hitting the water...
Good luck and stay safe!!

WhaTT

Absolutly right when a trip is planned the one backing out still pays. Including gas, eating and drinking money for those that do go. Needless to say when I've planned a trip nobody has ever backed out. I guess I would allow an exception to attend a funeral or something.

I'm a network engineer- a nerd-for-hire. Of course, guess when the biggest job in years comes in. Working for a client from Alabama. He fishes, if you call it that, in a "Gambler" bass boat. Gimme a break, a slight breeze on Mille Lacs would take this thing out like the Poseidon. He actually feels bad about me missing the opener- he didn't know!

Anyway, I'm leaving Friday for 5 days on Kabetogama. The amatuers will be out of the way by then.

I fish, therefore, I am.

You'd think the residents at the nursing home could take care of themselves for one lousy weekend! Oh well, today I fish. Catching is the tricky part.
God lyk!

I simply love fishing...ice and open water, but I hav'nt made a trip on opening day, for a number of years now.

I got tired of the traffic up, and worse traffic comming back...tired of people arguing at the boat landings, even seen a couple of fights.

You can't seem to break off from the crowd, because if you do and someone sees you pull in a fish "Whoosh!" an armada desends on you.

It is usually cold and miserable and after having high hopes and high expectations after a long time between last ice and the opener, it never turns out as good as you think it's going to. At any rate, some people can make it work and have a good time doing it, I guess I'm not one of them.

We went trout fishing instead and did pretty good! My wife caught the most, I caught the biggest...had a good day, lots of laughs, some good food, good company with afew other fishermen, and did'nt fight any crowds!

We were even back in time to catch the Twins game on T.V.!

I'm watching that game. I think I'd rather be back out in the wind.

I am the only one of my group of fishing buddies who could open this weekend, so I did the family thing with the wife and kids.

My oldest came down with a bad cold Friday night, but my youngest and I got a few. I'll go with the guys next weekend.

From what I've heard of how people did it was better being at/in the wedding in the warmth of a church and have a few cocktails at the reception then sitting out in the rain......or if up at LOW in the snow.

A few years ago my buddy got married on Pheasant opener, the real kicker is he is my connection to the land in South Dakota...so needless to say we go the weekend after opener. Probably better hunting conditions anyway but still a drag.

Let me see. I was off in SW WI attending my nephew's confirmations and they also had birthday party's. Guess what! Next weekend it's my kids turn with a birthday party and a confirmation.

I sure hope I can sneak out soon! Otherwise I'll just have to wait till memorial weekend to go up to Upper Red and chase some slabs.

Good Luck to those who can make it out.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
