Slip Bobbering?

any help would be great.is it better to use your line right to the hook or use a swivel with a leader for slipping? i ask this because i was told when using a leech,with out a swivel,your line gets twisted. is this true? thanks

I like to use a swivel with a leader, for one thing it does help with line twisting, and if you happen to break off, your almost always going to retain your bobber. I fish alot with lighted slips so don't want to be buying them every trip out.

Hey ice guy,do you have a problem with line tangeling when you cast? if not, what style of slip bobber do you use? thanks for the response. p.s do you use the bobbers where the line goes trough the middle or just on the bottom? THANKS

I use the ones where you slip the line through the middle of the whole length of the bobber. The ones where you just go through the bottom tend to twist and tangle more. I like the 'Wing-It' bobbers, myself, but that is just personal preference.

I've used the Mille Lacs series of bobbers by Thill a lot but lately I've tried the Wave Busters and like them. You can cut them to lenght to balance your rig.When there's waves, I like my float to go under the wave and come back up in the wave trough. When it doesn't, I set the hook. For night fishing, just poke a tiny light stick in the top and it works great. I've never felt the need for a swivel, but it probably wouldn't hurt. I just like to tie as few knots as possible. Less to go wrong. Especially with my big, clumsy fingers.

I like to use ant swivels, they are small and work good for me, plus I usually use a leader of vanish.

I also like the Thill bobbers. I usually use the smallest one and small split shot so the wallyes won't feel too much resistance and drop it. I've never used a swivel on bobber rigs, and never had a problem.

I've heard people talk about closet clampers...Clamp early and Clamp often!

I second the wave busters/ice busters bobbers! As far as the swivel. It depends on how lazy I am. Yes it helps on the line twist, but mono and spinning gear will always twist. I just reluctantly accept it.

I like the foam floats that you thread the line through. They have enough bouyancy to stay on top in rough water and the european styles do not. They're great when it's flat dead calm. Definetly use a small swivel but I'd use one big enough so it doesn't get pulled up into the bobber and stuck. A lighter leader is a good idea to help with getting the floats back.

Most of the time when I'm slipbobber fishing I don't use a swivel. But I'm only slipbobbering in about 7' to 9' of water. As far as losing a bobber if you break off, just tie a rubber band knot about 1' up from your jig. If you break your line your slipbobber will come back to you! Make sure to use the Wave Buster Bobber! It will cast as Straight as an arrow when you have a 1/16 or 1/8th oz, jig on your line. It is pre weighted with 1/8th oz inside the bottom cap for further and stable casts. You can see the Wave Buster better than any bobber because of the Orange sleeve on top. You can also slide the sleeve down and trim the bobber to make it more sensitive. One bobber that will work with 1/8 oz jigs down to the smallest Crappie size jigs. I do alot of night fishing and I will poke a starter hole with a tooth pick into the top of the Wave Buster bobber and then insert a 3mm glow stick for 8hrs of night fishing! Nothing funner that seeing a lighted bobber go down! One thing to remember is that you can use some of your Ice Fishing jigs (I like to use glow jigs) for summertime slip bobber fishing! I fish both ways depebding ont eh conditions. I f I'm fishing Rock I'll use the short leader of light line than the main line and a swivel. That way if I get hung up I'm only out a jighead.

I haven't had any trouble with twisted line with or without the swivel. But I alway use a small jighead on my bobber rigs. This minimizes the twisting and tangling.

I haven't had issues with line twist when slip bobber fishing, even with leeches. I do end up using swivels, though, because I use a lot of Fireline, so I tie a monofilament leader for decreased visibility. If I'm using 6 lb. Fireline, I'll use a 4lb. mono leader; that way a snag only costs me the terminal tackle.

Fish4ed, That would work good with mono down below your fireline and snapswivel! Now to make a few rigs about 2' to 3' long (all the same length) with different jigs to try out which you could quickly snap on and off your main line! Sounds good, Bruce Mosher
