We noticed the same thing last weekend. We spent most of our time fishing muskies in Vineland bay, but did make it out to the mud flats for a short while. Lots of dead walleyes.

We didn't examine any, and most seemed to be in th 20-25" category. I just chalked it up to catch and release mortality.

I noticed a lot of dead walleyes in cove and walkon bays around the fourth of July. I also saw a couple out in the gravel flats outside these areas. I don't fish the big pond much but I don't recall ever seeing many dead walleyes. My theory is that some fishermen who are disgusted with the slot limit are killing or injuring fish that are not in the slot limit before releasing them as a protest to the slot limit. I can see how some might think that if they can't have that fish that nobody else(native or non-native) should.

id bet that alot of the fish got caught and swallowed the hook and or not properly released, because we are forced to release the fish if its not in the slot, but i wouldnt doubt some people killing the fish as you said,I hope thats not the deal

Is it Wanton Waist from those that are allowed to net the most etc.

Why are we so quick to blame our own??

I think other wise with the walleys being so deep that people are probably just bringing them up to fast and this destroys there air sac and that kills them, this being more likely.

I saw something like what you described several years ago on Winnie. Walleye and other species of fish were dead and dying. It was in an area of shallow water with no weeds. I talked with a DNR fisheries biologist about it. He had said that when the weather is hot and calm for an extended period of time that the dissolved o2 can be used up in shallow water. Fish wander into the shallows and die. Wind and cooler water temps will replenish the o2. Could this be what you saw?

I didn't see a lot of dead walleyes this weekend, but there sure were a lot of dead tulibees floating around.

I also saw a lot of dead tulibees also. I think I only saw one dead walleye. I would think a released walleye would be pretty stressed out coming from deep cool water to the top where the water is warm. This could be why people are seeing dead walleyes.

I put over 20 miles on this weekend, according to the GPS, and never saw one dead eye. I did see tons of tulibee though, on all areas we fished.

D-MAN--just several question's ;;give us your opion; tullies die, perch thrive- will there be an invasion of big perch , like a few years ago? (and the eyes didnt have to bite our bait) now I came from the old school of fisherman;;;if one of the spiece's eat's the other or dies off, and is no longer there somebody's going to come out smoken the next year. Correct me if I'm wrong--tullies eat everything in site--fry's, + all and arnt fussy? second ? how much does a pearch gain in weight and length each year?- my opinion is there's a perch paridice there next year

Tullies die simply from low oxygen levels from increasing water temps. As far as the one dies off the other gets better thing its really hard to tell. I would imagine that more tullies get netted every year rather than die from warm water temps. Its all in the food chain and avaible bait that will determine fish hatches and sizes. But with the recent tribal netting the DNR has no clue what to think now. I do believe we need to keep less jumbo perch and take some smaller ones to eat. Just like in other lakes when panfish get stunted. Its hard to say, i guess thats mother natures and the DNR's job. How has that 15-MT treatin ya

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a note:
Was swimming on the East Side with the kids. Beautiful day. But, saw several dead eyes around a pound or so floating on the top. Had to keep my lab from swimming out to get one.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
