Mud Flats?

legendelite

Recommended Posts

Going up Wednesday and need a report. Are the Mud Flats turning out fish yet? If so, are they hitting on spinners yet?

One more question. In an effort to help local business, where is the best resort to launch my boat on the south-west side of the lake?

Thanks for your help!

The flats have been going for a couple of weeks. Small red spinner blade and a small leech is what worked this past weekend, the weekend before it was crawlers.
As for your choice of resort they will all need the business, I sugget you STAY AWAY FROM MCQUIODS, he dosen't want the"MEATHOGS", his words not mine, but I'm sure he can get you a deal at the casino...if you like that kind of thing.
You can't go wrong with Fishers and the bites good over that way, so less travel time on the water.

Thanks for the info Wazz. But, based on a comment like that I think I will be doing my business at McQuoids. It's nice to see a business owner up there who is not so worried about pleasing the meat hunters. I think I'll enjoy the rest of the summer on the big pond now, won't have to deal with all the idiots whose goal is to fill the box every night out.

Oh my dear boy you miss the point, it is irresponsible to think that the money you spent for your license gives the right to condemn another group, because you don't agree. I thought we were all on the same side. You certainly can align yourself with whom ever you choose. But that does not give you the right to critize.
For a resort owner to say something like that is akin to saying we don't want any Jews, or blacks.
Have fun fishing and rip-his-lips-off.....

No, I think you miss the point here. That is a low blow to come on here and name an individual person then to bash him for, of all things a comment about "meathogs". I'm sorry but I don't think there is much support for the meathog race.

Maybe I don't understand what your definition of a meathog is? You are not born a meathog, the meathog mentality is a way of thinking. I'm sorry if I'm not allowed to criticize a general group of people's mindset.

If you are one it is definately not something to be proud of.

If the meathog is a race, then consider me a racist.

The mud flats are going good, and have been for a while. The deep gravel is picking up and I did real well on Sunday with a rig and a leech. I was using the Lindy No snagg sinker. As for the Wazz comments, he is way off base about Terry McQuoid. He obviously doesn't know him. I know Terry and he is a straight shooter and will stand up for what is right.

I agree with Super Ron, when it comes to good people the McQuoids are at the top of the heap. I have to give Terry credit for all the great things he has done. I highly recommend staying at McQuoids Inn and visiting Kevin at Mac's Twin Bay to eat. Wazz, you are dead wrong. This forum has no room for attacking individuals. Let's keep this forum for what it was intended and that is to improve everyone's fishing skills.

Muskieman, SuperRon, Couldn't have said it better myself. Have stayed at, and fished out of Mcquoids on several occasions. The people and operation is top notch. Terry is always willing to go out of his way to help a person out. He's an A+ in my book smile.gif

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
