New DNR limits

I would like to know what you all think about the new limits that will be in affect come June 5,2001. I have always been big on slot limits for Mille Lacs. I believe that since limits were implemented, the fishing has gotten progressively better each year. This years initial limits, were in my opinion excessive. Keeping anything over 19 inches is getting to be too large anyway, and keeping a 28" is too small for a trophy and too large to eat. However, the new changed limits are too restrictive. Only 16" to 18" and NO TROPHY?! How about 15 to 18 and one over 30"?? I would like to hear from you all on your thoughts about this rediculous new limit. I can only imagine how the resorts on the big lake must feeling about this.

To be very honest I need more time to rationally think about this. I was ticked at first. On the opener I would not have had a keeper fish with this regulation. The others in the boat would have had the 3 they got though. My fish were 19.5 and 19.75 inches.

My personal limit for keepers is 20" so the slot fit nicely for me and my values. I did like the idea of one over 28" but I still would have to release the 28+ because I have the digital camera along and I'm commited to CP&R(thank you guys who have shown me the light). So far the new reg isn't hurting me too badly, right??

Here is my biggest gripe about it.

What negative financial impact is this going to have on the resorts and the communities up north. I enjoy going to HJ's and having a beer and BSing with Henry. I pay a little more for the beer(resort price), but that's OK. Well, what am I going to pay for that same beer now that a lot of his customers may not be fishing Mille this year?? How about the guys that guide for a living on this lake?? How do they feel about having to call their clients that have booked for this summer and telling them about the reg changes??

Am I way off base here, or does everyone that comes to the big pond only trophy fish. If so this new reg won't affect them???

I also think that slots are great, but how come the DNR doesn't lower the limit a little also?? Just thinking out loud. I'm interested to hear what the locals think of this because it will affect you much more than me.

I weighed in on the other post, but will add something here.Lets face it,with a lake like
Mille Lacs, the walleyes are not really too difficult on the whole to come by.When they are on the bite, they can easily be had,
by even the inexperienced angler. There are plenty of folks that don't get up there every weekend.Folks, that DO appreciate a meal of good fish, when they do finally get out up there. While the slots have had success in helping the fishery, they fell short in and of themselves, with the lack of a limit reduction, for controlling the overall numbers of fish taken. After awhile, even those fish in the slot proposed will, soon dry up.The object of management, should be to protect the fishery, and at the same time keep the traditions that suround it, intact. And yes, people go to Mille Lacs to EAT walleye!!They have for years. The big fish are a bonus..A slot limit that only lasted a few weeks,is a disaster. There obviously has to be a change in the limits, as well as slots. The only bright side I see in any of this, is now people HAVE to release the big ones. I guess I have "vented" enough now!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
