Bowhunters- Deer movement

Recommended Posts

red bricks

I spent the last two days in the woods. I saw 2 nice 8's, one sat. night and one sun. night. Both came by just before last shooting light. First buck seemed interested in my doe scent. Head tipped back sniffing. Second bigger buck walked right over my scent pad and didn't even break stride. It paid very little attention to my doe decoy. I think both these deer were coming off of afternoon beds. Moving very close to dark. Has anyone seen buck movement earlier in the day or mid day? Any reaction to scent? I thought I might see more deer during the day. I hope to get out one more time before the bangers hit the woods. Hopefully those bucks will give me a little better angle to shoot. Both deer were under 15 yards!!

A couple nights ago after dark I saw a nice buck chasing two does(good sign). I went hunting twice last week. I saw a lot of Doe movement but only one buck. The thing was directly below my stand. Before that I watched him about a half hour. He was milling around eating acorns. This was about two hours before sun down. I watched him make a scrape. He eventually vanished into the woods. I am going out tomorrow afternoon and again Wed & Thur. I hope to see some action. If anything happens i'll be sure to report back. I hunt in Taylors Falls.

I went to close the cabin last Friday, up by Longville.

On stand that evening, I had a yearling walk right under my stand at about 5:00 p.m.

Saturday morning, watched a basket-rack 4 point from about 70 yards, eating casually, I hit my Primos Can a couple of times and the grunt tube a little later, he didn't even look-up.

Saw nothing Saturday evening, Sunday a.m. 6 Does bedded down by my stand.

The only real Buck activity I saw was on some fire roads on the East side of Leech lake while out chasing Grouse. Good scrape lines, some ground scrapes and 1 huge Buck bounding away from me and the Dog...

Boy, a meal of fresh Grouse is hard to beat grin.gif

My dad shot a nice 8 pointer last Wednesday at 4:00 PM, it was on the prowl for sure.

This weekend I saw two six pointers and 7 does & fawns on Saturday AM in Central MN, one I grunted in and the other came in chasing does.

Saturday night near Park Rapids, I saw one 8 pointer and 11 does and fawns. The 8 pointer was close to a shooter and he was working his scrape line, checking out the does. We did see one monster buck and another smaller buck chasing does across our field also. This is the week to be on the stand no doubt, I just wish this wind would let down.

The bucks are on the move, 4 of us hunted this weekend and shot 3 deer. A six point and a nice 10 pointer and a doe. Both buck moved late. It's only going to get better. We hunted southern MN.

I hunted about 5 miles west of Leech Sat Sun, Monday. I did not see a buck, does and fawns only. There was a good amount of hunters out tending to stands etc, so I don't know if that was the reason or just how it is sometimes. Scrape activity is moderate at best from this area. Tons of rubs.

Well I went out this past evening along with my cousin. The Bucks are nuts. I saw 2 tonight and my cousin saw 3. In the morning I wasn't out but 3 Bucks were seen on the prowl. One nice 8 chasing two does around and around! My aunt who was hunting said she yelled and they paid her no mind. I had a 4 visit my stand 3 times. Every time he would leave he would appear form a different direction. He stood under my stand forever....Wow! it was fun tonight. Oh yeah..We did see Does too. Out of the 7 or 8 we saw today 3 were shooters. 4 days left to myself.

WB make the CUT

Up North here the Bucks really started to rip it up about a week ago, the does are still with fawns but I have seen two chases.
It is hard seeting down the stick and string for the old firestick but its always a BLAST

I live West of St. Cloud and hunt there and we have a hunting cabin West of Menahga, the hunting in both spots has been excellent this year. I am hoping the wind stays down this evening, I will be on my stand in 2 hours!

We've just started to see some scrapes on the edge of our fields and a few rubs, but not alot. We've been practicing QDM on the 160 acres we hunt near Grand Rapids, MN and it's paying off. We've seen more decent bucks than ever before. My dad had a fork horn "dogging" after a doe fawn last night. He was grunting the hole time, he said that poor little doe fawn didn't no which way to run. LOL I saw a big buck yesterday AM, but didn't have my binocs and it was 100-150 yards away, but I could see rack, so it musta' been pretty good. Lots of deer movin'. My buddy was in Walker today and saw a bunch of canvasbacks on Leech, may have to try for 'em being I don't rifle hunt.

bmc.

Bucks just starting in the metro area from what I can tell - at least where I'm hunting. I rattled a small buck in the other night, that was at least pretty curious and he checked a scrape nearby. The does are definitely not ready yet, but the bucks are starting to get a little worked up... Scrapes started showing up more in the last week.

NELS-BELLS

I was out yesterday morning and last evening and saw one. (too dark to shoot) Lots of tracks in the snow like they were really moving on Tues. That snow is so crunchy now that you can't get to your stand without alerting every deer within a 5 mile radius. I don't think that the deer like to move when it is crunchy like that.

Cold Mo Fo on Friday!! I got a very cold bottom. I saw 1 doe all day long. The snow was very loud to walk on. Not much you can do to be quiet going to the stand at that point. On Saturday I pulled out the rifle and shot a huge 9 pointer. 20" inside spread. I was siting in a swamp and didnt hear it coming up from behind me. I turned around and there he was 15 yds away looking right at me. The reason I hadn't heard him is was that he had just come from a bed 10 yds from where I shot him. I can't believe he let me walk in and sit down right in his bedroom without jumping. I had even laid down and snoozed off for a half hour. I woke up and grunted a few times which must be why he came over to check me out. I just wish I had shot him with my bow. I probably would have been shaking too much!!

If Minn Kota doesn’t supply them any longer, you should search the typical on line sales sites in case someone is advertising new old stock parts. I have a 55lb Maxxum on my fishing boat that needs a new armature.  MK doesn’t sell them anymore either.  I did find some new lower units available and some armatures.  I don’t have the serial number sticker on my TM anymore to know for sure what armature to get so I took mine to an electric motor shop to be rewound.  The cost is about the same as a new lower unit though. I might just as well get the lower unit with new seals and such but it is really a wash on price and everything else is in good shape. Check more resources if you haven’t already is my advice.  Good luck.

Hello,  I have an older model minn kota trolling motor.  Its a 1999 All Terrain Power Max 44lb Thrust.    I cannot seem to find a new foot pedal system for it. Should I just get a new trolling motor? Thanks in advance for any help

It’s the greatest experience to take a kid duck hunting on youth day. There is not enough kids out there to chase the ducks away. When I take kids o rarely see another person hunting. I wish they had youth day when I was a kid. Stop being selfish and give the kids a chance!

I think that's a great way to do it.  Probably only takes a minute to put it on or take it off.

The guy I bought our place from had an 1/8" cable right down the center of the whole dock. I'll likely move towards a more invisible, section by section approach. However, the full length cable setup has been effective and not as intrusive as one may imagine. Really easy to fasten all the sections at once. May be able to see in the attached

Headed north to a little perch and walleye lake this morning. The day didn't start the greatest, go to take off from the landing and the boat porpoised like a mofo... Ah crap forgot the plug haha haven't done that one in a few years... The day got better from there, we found fish stacked up on the wind blown weed line... There were so many fish I assumed they were schools of big perch, but they were mostly smaller walleyes with some real nice keepers mixed in... Crawlers under a bobber were the ticket... They would hardly touch a leech.

Many of you FM long termers remember FisherDog from way back...he used to post all the time before he moved to Florida.  He was up for a couple days this past week and we got on a good crappie bite in the area, he is a Crappie Guru and man we worked hard but had fun...boated well over 100 in 2 days on the outside weed edges...many absolute Donkeys. Kept a few smaller ones so he could have a fish fry for his family...couple of pics...he's in the blue shirt.

Any action out on Gull?  I have tried a few times and have had some success pulling rapalas but finding areas void of weeds is getting harder and harder.  Just curious how others are fairing out there.  I am thinking I need to get out there during the day and try small jigs and 3" minnows as that is what have been in the guts of the fish we have cleaned.
    • ozzie
I have a buddy that has a cabin on the lake and he will fish the walleyes over deep water and also in the weeds as they seem to relate to both at times.  Seems like a hard lake to pattern but he always seems to catch something out there.  Good Luck
