I have a Beretta 391, I've used it in some nasty weather without a problem. I would highly recommend the Beretta.

Good Luck,
Ben

the sbe is the way to go. they dont jam 4 of my huntin buddies got them smooth accurate and they got good range. if you wanted to do this with a 1200 dollar gun yoou could bury it in mud for a week come back clean out the barrel and it will fire right off no probs. now thats reliability. for geese put a 31/2 T shot and there deadly there dead on impact. as far as range and accuracy id put the power up there with my ten gauge ithica. and a whole lot lighter. but with the sbe your definately getting what you paid for. the 870 is also a good choice for a pump and cheap. but my next will be the sbe.

I don't have the SBE but the super 90, and this thing is the best waterfowl gun I ever owned. you can only shoot 3 inchers from the 90, so I would think the SBE would be even better.
what I like about this gun, is that I can go from grouse hunting low brass shells to top mags, and this this works the same. I wish my winchester could do that.
make sure to get a camo gun, well worth the extra bucks.

I am looking to buy a new shotgun and was trying to decide between the Benelli Super Black Eagle or the New Berreta Xtrema. I need a 12 gauge, 3 1/2, 26 inches, that can handle cold weather and water. I hunt here in MN and also in the river bottoms in WS. I plan to use it for upland and waterfowl, and possibly a little turkey. I think synthetic stocks would be better prefferably in camo. I also like pumps but don't mind auto's. Reliability is key, I don't need it to jam up on me when I've got geese overhead. I had my heart set on the super black eagle because I've shot them before and really like them but also like the xtrema for it's simplicity in cleaning, (it comes apart in only 3 pieces). If anyone has shot them and knows anything about them I could use some help. Thanks.

A rem 870 express will never let you down, you could use it as an oar or a push pole in a pinch and it still will work but it is not in the same class as the guns you are looking at.
Good luck picking one out!

I shoot a Montefeltro and it shoots the cheapest low brass to the heaviest 3 mags. I like this gun cuz it is light and it comes up nice. I shot 4 boxes today of 1 1/8 oz 7 1/2 shot and I was wearing just a t shirt and I cant even tell i was shooting a gun as far as my shoulder feels. Someday I want to get a SBE but I dont hunt geese so I figure right now I dont need it at least that what my wife says but i want one. I shot a Super X2 that my buddy has and he even liked my Benelli over his Super X2 after he shot it a few times. My dad has a Beretta and i shot it. Its a nice gun but I would go with a benelli. I think Beretta owns Benelli is what i was told. Is this true i dont know but I go for the SBE all the way.

Performance worth the Price!

I shoot the Xtrema, awesome gun. A little bigger physicaly than the sbe, but I like the way it fits me and thats what counts. I can shoot the cheapest low base lead shot(7/8 oz shot) and it will cycle every time were as the sbe's that people I hunt with have they have to shoot at least 1 oz loads. The extrema is built like a tank! And the recoil reduction that thing has will amaze you, check it out. I got a good deal on mine down at Ostrom's sporting goods down in Dalton. Give me a holler if you have any more questions.

As you may have noted from my post that I was thinking of getting a SBE myself. Well I have had it for about two weeks now and love it. I know many other people that have Benelli's (super 90, montefeltro, M-1, SBE) and they love them. Have heard good things about the Berretta as well. The SBE just felt better to me. It had less weight and felt less "bulky" compared to the Berretta. Berretta does have a better camo patter on it. It is a nice cattail/marsh camo compared to having to go with a woodland in the SBE. I have the black synthetic with the 26".

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. It sounds as if both are great guns, I guess the only way to decide which gun to buy is to shoot a few rounds out of each gun and figure out which one fits me better. The added weight of the Beretta doesn't bother me because it helps my swing. Although it might be bothersome carrying it throught the woods or the fields after birds. Thanks again for the input.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went through the same decision last year and decided on the Extrema - I have been very happy with my decision thus far. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I thought the Extrema fit me a little better. I'd shoulder them both and see how they feel.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
